Wrestlers take 8th dual meet
place I 1 th of 40 in WOSSA
It was a week of ups and downs
for the SHDHS wrestling team
winning their eighth consecutive
championship in dual meets
against Stratford but coming in
eleventh in the WOSSA tour-
nament held at Parkhill school
Saturday.
SHOliS, who has lost only one
dual meet in the past eight years,
beat Stratford Northwestern 48-
33 February 16.
Vince Winters, 84 pounds,
Richard Rooseboom, 90 pounds,
Kevin Hern, 98 pounds, Murton
Brock, 115 pounds, Mike
Westelaken, 123 pounds, Mark
Paton, 130 pounds, Brian Mayer,
136 pounds, Rick Skinner, 148
pounds and John Coolman at 168
pounds all finished first in their
matches,
Hern defeated the Huron Perth
Champion in his class after being
defeated by the same opponent
the week before.
Coolman wrestled the Huron
Perth Champion and pinned him,
even though his opponent was.ten
pounds heavier.
Coach Doug Ellison called his
team's eleventh place finish
disappointing, even though there
were over 40 schools entered in
the meet,
Vince Winters finished seventh
in his class, despite a four inch
cut on his head that was caused
by the garage door at his home.
The cut severely hampered his
performance.
Mike Westelaken finished
second in the 160 pound class
after winning six of his seven
matches. His strong showing
earned him the top wrestler of the
week honors.
Mark Paton finished fourth in
his class, after losing to the first
and second place competitors in
one of the toughest classes to
compete in. All five of the top
wrestlers in this class were
ranked closely together.
Rick Skinner was fifth with two
losses and Rick Bilcke fifth
winning four of his six matches.

won.They streaked upthe ice and
descended on the St. Marys net.
Haycock, who had just left the
penalty box,,decked Cann with a
cross-check that sent him
towards the net head first.
He struck the post with his
head, opening a cut and sending
him into severe convulsions,
As well as the cut, which was
closed with four stitches, he
received a concussion. St. Marys
Hospital was unable to ac-
commodate him because their
x-ray machine was broken and he
was rushed to Victoria Hospital
in London where he stayed for
three days.
He is now at home, and has
been unable to attend school all
week. He is finished for the
season and is not going to be able
to participate in physical ac-
tivities until the summer.
The upshot of the incident is
Haycock's penalty, which was a
five minute major for boarding.
Boarding is handed out when one
player slams another wantonly
against the hoards, not the
goalpost.
Aside from the rough play,
there was some hockey and the
A's rolled to their three wins on
the basis of 2-1,3-1 and 4-1 games.
Scott Ball opened the scoring at
7:34 of the first game when he
took the puck from behind the net
and tucked it behind a bewildered
Steve Wells in the.Exeter net.
The A's tied it in the third when
Dave Bell dug the puck out of a
corner and passed to Doug
Brooks who traded it off to Dave
Atthill whose powerful blas t found
the target.
With 6:02 left to play, Dave
Bogart deflected Doug Brooks
shot into the net to give the A's
their victory margin.
The A's dominated the 'five
minutes after Cann's injury
peppering St. Marys with 10 shots
and carrying the play although
they were unable to score.
Doug Brooks scored twice in
the A's second win, one into the
empty net near the end of the
third period.
Brooks opened the scoring in
the second period when he pushed
the puck past Swan in the St.
Marys net after a scramble in
front.
Dave Bogart tied it up when he
and Dave Atthill broke in on a two
on one situation. Atthill drew the
defenceman to him and left
Bogart alone on Swan.
St. Marys was back in the game
when Keith Hartwick scored at
7:56 of the third after loose
checking in the A's end.
Brooks finished off the scoring
with his power play empty net
goal at 14:39.
Coach Bogart credited the
goaltending of his Hoffman and
Wells as well as Swan who played
in the St. Marys nets,
Overall, Exeter outshot St.
Marys 30 to 28.
Larry Dawson opened the
scoring in the first period of the
third game when he his booming
slapshot beat Swan in net.
The score remained 1-0
throughout the first period which
saw Brian Mercer pick up 14
consecutive minutes in penalties
when he protested a slashing call
and was slapped with a
misconduct and automatic minor
on top of the original minor,
Jeff Fuller and Dave Atthill, on
a solo rush while the A's were
shorthanded each added to the
Exeter total before Brender Mac
Donal scored the only marker for
St. Marys.
Mercer banged' in a goal into
the open net at 14:02 for the only
allowed scoring in the third
period.
St. Marys did manage a goal in.
the third but a strange ruling
disallowed. it.
Mark Parsons, of the A's, was
called for a penalty at the same
time and the officials said the
goal would not stand,
Bogart again gave credit to
Swan who, he said, robbed the A's
on three separate chances.
Calling it a rough series, he
said there was rivalry between
the two teams because many of
the players knew one another
from school.
"Some things were said bet-
ween the coaches that we
apologized for after the series"
he continued, "but I guess that's
what happens in the heat of
battle."
The A's do not know who their
next opponent is.
Midget
After dropping the first two
games to St. Marys, 8-1 and 4-3
the Midgets came back to close
the series a little with a 5-4 win,
Randy Parson picked up the
only goal for the Midgets in the
opening bout when he was set up
by Perry Pooley.
Coach Bob Pooley called the
second game, won in overtime,
"very exciting. We outplayed
them in the overtime but their
goaltender robbed us time after
time."
Randy Fisher opened the
scoring at 3:03 of the first before
St. Marys exploded for three
goals in the remaining minutes of
the period. Phil Arthur with a
pair and Jim McCutcheon gave
St. Marys their lead,
Randy Parsons scored one in
the second and one in the third to
tie the score for the Midgets.
Brad Taylor figured in both
goals, and Darrell Preszcator
picked up an assist on the second.
Phil Arthur scored the over-
time marker at 3:55 of the period
to finish off the scoring.
The Midgets came back
Saturday when they took the
third game 5-4.
Scott Ferguson opened St,
Marys, but Exeter came back
with four goals, by Paul Pooley,
and three to Randy Parsons.
Jon Bailey scored for St. Marys
before Perry Pooley got the
eventual game winner at 13:35 of
the third period.
Bill Scheursman and Jamie
Dunbar added goals for St. Marys
before the end of the game but the
Midgets were able to hold them
off.
