A three goal second period by
the Midgets in their fifth game
and a dramatic overtime goal by
the Bantam team clinched their
opening round playoffs against
Byron.last week, The only loss of
the week was by the Juveniles,
who were ousted from com-
petition Saturday night.
Bantam. "A"
An overtime goal by Doug
Brooks in the fifth game of the
Bantam "A" series clinched the
playoffs for them,
The A's entered the week down
two games to one but evened the
series February 11 in Exeter,
when they won 4-1,
Brian Mercer opened the
scoring for the A's when he put in
a short handed goal at 9:13 of the
first period. The A's were outshot
9-3 in the period,
Mercer and Preston Dearing
combined in the second period to
set up Dave Bogart for the
eventual game winner, Bogart
took a pass at full steam, split the
defence and faked the goalie out
of position before he put it away.
Wayne Parsons banged in a
rebound at 4:54 and Mercer
scored his second on a play
similar to Bogart's to complete
the scoring for the A's.
The Byron team picked up a
little bit in the third period, pep-
pering Doug Hoffman in net with
14 shots,
Coach Ron Bogart had high
praise for his goaltender, who's
shutout was broken at 7:11 of the
third frame when the A's failed to
clear a rebound and Hoffman
faced three consecutive shots, the
third one by Dave Ayers finally
beating him.
A cliff hanging finale ended the
Don Beaver's hat trick and
Steve MacDonald's pair of goals
led the Exeter Avco team to a 5-4
victory in a see-saw battle played
in Huron Park.
Scott Smith opened the scoring
for the Huron Park Northstars in
thefirstperiod when he converted
a pass from Mike Rippen.
MacDonald tied the score before
the end of the period,
After a scoreless second
period, both teams exploded for
goals in the third frame.
Don Beaver scored two goals in
a row to put Avco up 3-1. Dave
Jackson figured in both goals and
Rob Dekoker picked up an assist
on the second.
Wana Legociff from Smith and
Dave Lawrence made it 3-2
before Shane Peacock from
Lawrence tied it.
The Beaver-Jackson com-
bination again proved potent
when they scored to make it 4-2.
Peacock picked up his second of
the game to tie it before Mac-
Donald scored the game winner
from Glasgow.
A total of 10 minors and a
misconduct were called
throughout the game.
In exhibition action Saturday,
Bob Lawrence shut out the
Penguins as the Northstars came
up with a 2-0 win. Scott Smith and
Dave Lawrence were the goal
scorers,
series, when the game went into
overtime in Byron.
Bogart again had high praise
for his goaltending team of
Hoffman and Wells, who rose to
the occasion as the A's were
again outshot by Byron.
After a scoreless first period,
Dave Snoddy opened the scoring
for Byron at 2:19 of the second
frame. His goal stood up until
4:12 of the third when Dave
Bogart banged in the puck after a
goal mouth scramble.
Both teams had chances to
break the tie in the closing
minutes, as the A's shot wide on
two golden opportunities and
Byron got one by Hoffman only to
have it hit the goalpost.
Regulation time ended 1-1 and
the stage was set for Brooks'
go
'la'llt.e A's started to take the play
to Byron, with closer checking
predominating the early part of
the overtime,
Byron picked up an in-
terference penalty at 2:45 of the
period and Exeter took full ad-
vantage. Controlling the puck
completely, Dan Bell dug it out of
the corner and passed to Brooks
who pushed it between the
goaltender's legs ,to clinch the
winr; In the words of Bogart
"Everyone went beserk."
Byron was unable to get a shot
on net in overtime, and a team
effort by the A's earned them a
berth against St. Marys in the
semi-finals.
The series opened February 18
in St, Marys and resumes
February 19 in Huron Park where
the A's will be based with the
closing of the arena.
An 8.3 and 7-3 win by the Leafs
over the Flyers earned them the
right to meet the Bruins for the
final showdowns of Atom
Houseleague hockey.
I3obby Rook's four goals led the
Leafs to their first victory,
February 13.
Rook opened the scoring before
Mike Salvona from George
Tomes tied it, Rook then put the
game away by scoring three
goals in a row before Tomes and
Salvona each connected for a
goal,
Glen Lessard and Steve
Morissey each added markers for
the Leafs.
Rook's four goals and Glen
Lessard's pair led the Leafs
again in their series clinching
victory Monday.
Dave Rook opened the scoring
in the first, before Mike Salvona
and Mike Lessard combined
twice to make it 2-1 for the
Flyers. It was the only time that
they led the game.
Lessard popped in a pair to put
the Leafs back on top before Scott
Merrylees tied it up near the end
of the second period.
The third period was all Bobby
Rook's as he scored four goals,
all of them unassisted.
The Leafs took the series in
three straight games to meet the
Bruins for league honors. That
best of five series starts
February 20.
Midget
A three goal third period by the
Midget team in their final with
Byron earned them a berth
against St. Marys in the semi-
finals.
To get there, the Midgets had to
defeat Byron twice in a row,
beating them 4-1 February 11 in
Exeter.
Dennis Preszcator opened the
scoring in the first period of the
fourth game when he converted a
pass from Paul and Perry Pooley
at 3:53.
Paul Pooley with an unassisted
effort scored the eventual winner
at 6:49 of the second before Andy
l3ozek counted the only marker
for Byron
Randy Fisher and Randy
Somerville added goals less
then a minute apart in the third
period,
Randy Somerville from Paul
Pooley and Randy Fisher from
Dennis Preszcator put Exeter
two up in, the second before Todd
Knight tied it again for Byron at
6:13. The tie stood for 35 seconds
until Somerville from Paul
Pooley and Fisher put the
Midgets out ahead again.
After only 32 seconds of the
third frame, Byron's Grant
Armstrong tied it up.
Then at 3:24, Somerville and
Fisher set up Perry Pooley for a
picture goal to clinch the win for
the Midgets.
Their series against St. Marys
starts February 18 in St. Mary's
and then on the 19th in Huron
Park.
Juvenile
Byron's Bob Deane came pp
with two goals to oust the
Juveniles from contention
Saturday night, as they beat
Exeter 4-3.
Deane opened the scoring in the
first period before Doug Osgoode
and Mike Desjardine set up Fred
Campbell at 6:47 to tie it up.
,Just 22 seconds later, Randy
Regier put Exeter ahead for the
only time in the game.
The lead was shortlived,
however, when Deane came back
a minute later to tie it with his
second goal of the game, an
unassisted effort, It came while
Exeter was playing shorthanded.
Jeff Poor scored the only goal
of the second frame for Byron at
12:20,
It came while Wayne Clark was
off cooling his heels for a hooking
call,
Terry Gellatly cemented the
win for the Byron squad when he
scored a shorthanded goal at
12:30. The goal stood up even
though Pete Kincaid came back
with a power play marker 20
seconds later to round out the
scoring.
Penalties again hurt the Exeter
team, as they took 15 minors and
allowed two powerplay goals.
Paul Shapton also picked up a
misconduct, Byron had a dozen
minors called against them.
"I," the young man told his
girl, "am keeping a record of all
the good times we have had
together."
"Oh," she gushed, "You're
keeping a diary!"
"Nope," he said, "checkbook
stubs."
The SHDHS wrestling team
continued their domination of the
Huron-Perth wrestling meets, as
they won their sixth title in seven
years last Friday in a com-
petition held at Stratford-
Northwestern high school in
Stratford.
SHDHS won the title for five
years in a row before last year
when they placed second to
Goderich.
They accumulated 156 points
Friday, to handily win over their
nearest competitor, Stratford,
who had 119. Goderich was third
with 89 points amongst the eight
teams that competed.
SHDHS took seven firsts, two
seconds, two thirds and three
fourths in the day long match.
All 14 wrestlers on the team
qualified for WOSSA finals to be
held in St. Thomas Friday and
Saturday.
Vince Winters in the 84 pound
class took a first place, as did
Richard Rooseboom at 90
pounds, Mike Westelaken at 115
pounds, Perry Sereda at 123
pounds, Mark Paton at 130
pounds, Brian Mayer at 136
pounds and John Coolman at 168
pounds.
Rick Skinner lost a close match
to the eventual champion in the

lost only one match, again to the

Keith Byrne, Huron Park,
stepped into the boxing ring for
his first competitive battle last
week in Kitchener and came out
the winner and Canadian
champion.
Byrne, a 24-year-old
heavyweight, defeated Panza
Zarka from Toronto in the
Ontario Amateur Boxing
Association showdown. He took
the heavyweight honors in three
rounds.
He had intended to fight in the
novice heavyweight class, but no
other novice turned up, so he
entered the heavyweight class to
meet Zarka.
Byrne-0 s only previous ex-
perience had been sparring
contests at Branch 90 Legion,
under the eye of trainer Frank
Bricker. Bricker called the six-
foot-Iwo 195 pound contender
"the best heavyweight prospect
I've had in years."
Byrne's title will be questioned
by the Canadian Amateur Boxing
Association, regarded as the
official boxing body in Canada.
The CABA views the OABA as
an outlaw group and does not
recognize their championships,
Fighters from other provinces
did not appear at the Kitchener
meet.
