The A's were outshot 9-3 in the period, Mercer and Preston Dearing combined in the second period to set up Dave Bogart for the eventual game winner, Bogart took a pass at full steam, split the defence and faked the goalie out of position before he put it away. Wayne Parsons banged in a rebound at 4:54 and Mercer scored his second on a play similar to Bogart's to complete the scoring for the A's. The Byron team picked up a little bit in the third period, pep- pering Doug Hoffman in net with 14 shots, Coach Ron Bogart had high praise for his goaltender, who's shutout was broken at 7:11 of the third frame when the A's failed to clear a rebound and Hoffman faced three consecutive shots, the third one by Dave Ayers finally beating him. A cliff hanging finale ended the Don Beaver's hat trick and Steve MacDonald's pair of goals led the Exeter Avco team to a 5-4 victory in a see-saw battle played in Huron Park. Scott Smith opened the scoring for the Huron Park Northstars in thefirstperiod when he converted a pass from Mike Rippen. His goal stood up until 4:12 of the third when Dave Bogart banged in the puck after a goal mouth scramble. Regulation time ended 1-1 and the stage was set for Brooks' go 'la'llt.e A's started to take the play to Byron, with closer checking predominating the early part of the overtime, Byron picked up an in- terference penalty at 2:45 of the period and Exeter took full ad- vantage. Controlling the puck completely, Dan Bell dug it out of the corner and passed to Brooks who pushed it between the goaltender's legs ,to clinch the winr; In the words of Bogart "Everyone went beserk." Byron was unable to get a shot on net in overtime, and a team effort by the A's earned them a berth against St. Marys in the semi-finals. The series opened February 18 in St, Marys and resumes February 19 in Huron Park where the A's will be based with the closing of the arena. Byrne, a 24-year-old heavyweight, defeated Panza Zarka from Toronto in the Ontario Amateur Boxing Association showdown. He took the heavyweight honors in three rounds. He had intended to fight in the novice heavyweight class, but no other novice turned up, so he entered the heavyweight class to meet Zarka. Byrne-0 s only previous ex- perience had been sparring contests at Branch 90 Legion, under the eye of trainer Frank Bricker. Bricker called the six- foot-Iwo 195 pound contender "the best heavyweight prospect I've had in years." Byrne's title will be questioned by the Canadian Amateur Boxing Association, regarded as the official boxing body in Canada.
