Royal Oak wins tourney
Trailing in the total goal series.
12.7 after the games held January
11 in Huron Park, Royal Oak,
Michigan came from behind to
win the tournament 22-18 in Royal
Oak on Sunday.
It is the first time in the four
year history of the tournament
that Royal Oak has won.
Huron Park lost all four of the
games this past weekend, as the
home ice advantage again proved
the deciding factor in the tour-
nament. Huron Park had taken
their five goal lead in the first
half of the tournament held
January 11 in Huron Park.
Mike Groom and Gil Yborra
both connected to dump the
Atoms 2-1 in their game.
Trevor Gilcrest from Mike
Salvona and Bobby Rook added
the only Huron Park goal at 8:15
of the second period,
The Mite game saw Royal
Oak's Kevin Smith come up with
two goals to lead his team to a 3-1
victory over Huron Park. Todd
Olsen connected on the other goal
for Royal Oak.
David Rook from Mike Min-
deling and Steve Tasko had the
lone Huron Park marker.
In other action, the Pee Wee
team took a slamming as they
dropped their game 7-0 and the
Bantams were edged 4-3 in their
contest,
The Parkettes and the girls
team from Royal Oak battled to a
scoreless tie in a goaltenders
duel.
Huron Park has won the three
previous tournaments, 15-13, 31-
28 and 32-28.
The series was started in 1972
with the Pee Wee, Bantam and
Atom teams playing. In 1973-74 it
was expanded to include the Mite
division.

Parkettes win
over CCAT
Yvonne Wells unassisted goal
at 7:07 of the second period was
the only marker of the Parkettes
game with CCAT Thursday night.
Darlene Lowe was in net for the
1-0 shutout victory.
Atom
The end of the season for the
Exeter Atoms came a little
sooner then they might have
expected as they dropped three
games in a row in their playoff
series with Byron, eliminating
themselves.
The closest game of the series
was the opener, which Byron won
5-2.
Byron took a two goal lead into
the second period on goals by Jeff
Ion and Brad Tahk.
Exeter's Brent Atthill closed
the gap a bit when he converted a
pass from Doug Scott at 1:14.
Less then five minutes later Doug
Marr popped in the eventual
game winner for Byron.
Marr and Tahk each added a
goal in the third before Scott
Brintnell from Chris Van Gerwen
and Steve Laithwait finished off
the scoring for Exeter,
Byron took seven of the ten
minors called.
The second game of the series
was over at 1:22 of the first period
when Jeff Blain scored the first
goal of the game, Byron then
rolled to a 7-0 win over Exeter,
with goals going to Jeff Ion, Brad
Balmer with a pair, Doug Marr,
Jason Maling and Todd Schaefer.
Byron eliminated Exeter
Tuesday night with a convincing
13-0 victory.
Pee Wee B
Three shutouts in three games
has highlighted the Pee Wee B
playoffs as Exeter took the first
and second games 5-0 and 7-0 and
Byron the third with a squeaker,
1-0.
Rick Lin denfield's two goals
and two assists led Exeter to
their 7-0 win Saturday.
Kevin Parsons opened the
scoring in the first period with an
assist going to Greg Prout. It was
the only goal of the period.
Lindenfield added his two in the
second, both of them assisted by
Mike Clark.
Lindenfield returned the favor
when he took a pass from Scott
Pincombe and set Clark up for
Exeter's first goal of the third
period.
Parsons added another marker
from Kevin Easterbrook in the
period, as did Pincombe and Bill.
Glover to round out the scoring.
Stewart Morris's goal at 2:50 of
the first period was the only goal
of the game as Byron went on to
win the third match by his goal.
Two penalties were called'
against Exeter in the game that
was played at the arena.
Bantam "A"
The A's backs are to the wall,
as they split their games with
Byron this past week and trail in
their series 2 games to 1.
The home advantage is playing
a part in the series, as both teams
have won their games on home
ice,
Exeter tied the series up in
Exeter Thursday night with a
convincing 4-2 victory.
The refereeing of the Thursday
night's contest left a little to be
desired according to Coach Ron
Bogart.
Bogart, who described his
team's spirits as "much im-
proved" and "very high" felt that
Byron got away with a lot of
penalties because the referee
didn't call them.
Byron outshot the A's 29-16 on
the whole game, but Bogart
added emphatically that "its the
score that counts!"
Byron opened the scoring, with
two goals in the first period, one
coming from a scramble around,
the net,
Dan Bell put the A's in range
when he scored on pass from
Dave Bogart in the second
period.
A minute later Byron tried to
clear the puck but Larry Dawson
kept it in and let a low shot from
the point go that found its way
through a field of legs and into the
Byron net to tie the score.
It was the only period that
Exeter outshot Byron, 7-6.
The third period was only 33
seconds old when Preston
Dearing dumped the puck into
the Byron end and Brian Mercer,
who was circling in front of the
net, banged it home.
Mark Parsons set up Bell for
his second goal of the game to put
the icing on the cake for Exeter at
5:42.
Byron outshot Exeter 13-6 on
the period, but netminding by
Doug Hoffman kept them out of
the scoring picture.
"We must play full out all the
time . . , we can't afford mental
and defensive lapses" said
Bogart about his team's narrow
3-2 defeat Sunday in London.
Both teams were scoreless in
the first two periods, playing a
fast close checking hockey game.
Dan Bell opened things up first
in the third period when he beat
the goalie with a booming
slapshot at 1:16.
The lead was short lived
however, as Byron came back ten
seconds later when Dave Snoddy
skated in all alone to beat Hoff-
man in net,
Then Kevin Leach and Van
Derwarden added to the total to
make it 3-1 in less than two
minutes.
Then at 8:29 Dave Cann set
Bogart up at the point, but Bogart
elected to pass to Dave Atthill
rather thanshootand Atthill's low
drive brought the A's within a
goal.
Despite an extra attacker for
the lifted Hoffman the A's were
unable to score as their shots
were consistently deflected wide
of the net.
Their troubles weren't over
with the final bell either, as
Atthill took a misconduct for
disrespect to the official and it
was thought for a time that he
would be suspended from the
next game.
He will, however, see action
Wednesday night when the series
resumes in Exeter with the A's
facing elimination.
The A's also split their two
games in the Lucan Bantam
Hockey tournament Saturday,
losing to Delhi 6-2 but heating
Richmond Hill 4-3 in the con-
solation round.
The Delhi game was close until
the closing minutes, as Delhi led
only 3-2 before Wells was lifted
from the nets for the extra at-
tacker in an attempt to tie the
game.
The strategy miscued and the
Delhi squad popped in three goals
before the end of the game.
Dave Bogart scored both of the
A's goals, after Delhi had built up
a 3-0 lead in the first frame,
Larry Dawson's game winning
goal with 39 seconds left capped
the Richmond Hill game that saw
Richmond Hill fight back from a
2-0 deficit.
Brian Mercer and Bogart put
the A's ahead in the first period
before Richmond Hill closed the
gap with the only goal in the
second.
They tied the A's with less than
a minute gone in the final period
before Preston Dearing made it
3-2.
With 54 seconds left in the game
Richmond Hill again tied the
score setting the stage for
Dawson's dramatic game winner
coming on a low drive from the
point.
It is the third year in a row the
A's have won the consolation
trophy in the tournament.
