• Knight, Gagman entertain
235 at Sportsmen's dinner
S
S
•
"If there was 7.3 percent of the
population out in London, there
would have been 16,000 people"
said Olympic wrestler Harry
Geris, commenting on the ex-
cellent turn out at the third an-
nual Lions Sportsmen's dinner
held Tuesday night at the Legion
Hall,
235 people paid $25 a plate to
hear the head table, comprised of
16 members of the sports field
speak.
Dave "Tufty" Knight, the
hardnosed, southern athletic
director of Wilfrid Laurier
University was master of
ceremonies for the program. His
barbed tongue and acid com-
ments kept the pace of the
evening lively and kept the other
athletes on their toes.
Only Peter Dalla Riva, tight
end for the Montreal Allouettes,
got back at Knight, calling him
"Stuffy."
National League baseball
umpire Tom Gorman was the
Head speaker of the evening.
Gorman, who has "never seen so
much snow in my life" en-
tertained with a speech built
around his 26 year career as an
umpire.
His speech was liberally
sprinkled with names of baseball
greats, from managers to players
to league officials.
He maintains that once you
make a call, "let 'em suffer" and,
in umpire tradition, he has never
made a mistake.
Over his career, which has
included five World Series, in-
cluding the perfect game pitched
by Don Larsen in 1956, and five
Allstar games, he has had his
share of run-ins with managers
Ted "Teeder" Kennedy has
played and seen a lot of hockey in
his time, and the retired Maple
Leaf, who now works with horses
in St. Marys, thinks that the 1951
Stanley Cup team that he was a
member of could beat the
Philadelphia Flyers.
Kennedy, who appeared at the
Sportsmen's dinner Tuesday
night, feels that hockey has
suffered from expansion. "Older
guys say its not as good, 'but,
young people who like it should
boost it."
Kennedy signed with the Leafs
in 1943 for a $2000 bonus and a
$3500 contract, a far cry from
present contracts. He was a
member of the 1945 Stanley Cup
winning team and again in 1951, a
team that he called "great" and
feels would match any team
today.
He did not underestimate the
Flyers though, who he said would
be "a threat" in any series

It IS important to change your
tar's oil at specified intervals.
The alternative may be loss of
power due to sticking piston
rings.
Heavy-duty shock absorbers
are often recommended
because They provide better
ride control at highway
speeds.
Rocking a car to get out of
snow, mud or sand? Pause
every five minutes to let the
transmission cool.
Radial tires are preferred by
more drivers. Seventy-five per-
cent of new cars next year are
expected to have them.
IS your car in good shape? An
out-of-tune engine can cut

upset over his calls.
Each manager had their own
way of expressing displeasure,
from Casey Stengel, who would
pace around the umpire not
saying anything, to Leo Durocher
and Gene Mauch, who Gorman
felt were two of the most volatile,
Gorman then got serious in his
speech, talking, of threats on the
life of umpire Larry Bedette, who
made the controversial call in the
sixth game of the World Series
this year. Bedette had to have
FBI protection for a full month
after the series ended.
You're what we play for, what
we give our best for" Gorman
said, adding that the purpose of
the game is to get people's
"troubles off their minds. We're
playing for sports .fans without
fans we don't have a job,"
He closed to a cheer when he
said that he spoke to league of-
ficials early this week before he
left, and it is almost definite the
major league baseball will come
to Toronto.
Each member of the head table
acknowledged the cause that they
had come out to support, Milt
Morin Cleveland Brown veteran,
said that even though crippled
children have obvious disad-
vantages, they have many ad-
vantages that others should try to
emulate.
One of the highlights of the
evening was the appearance of
Toronto Maple Leaf great Ted
"Teeder" Kennedy who now
works with horses in the St.
Marys area.
Kennedy suggested that there
are now a lot of hockey players in
the NHL who wouldn't be there if
there were only six teams playing
and no WHA,
"because of the system they
have,"
Two opponents who stand out in
his mind are Gordie Howe and
Maurice "Rocket" Richard.
The two players each had their
own style. Howe "carried the
mail" he said, in reference to his
ability to make his own op-
portunities.
Richard on the other hand, was
an opportunist, and not so strong
between _the-bluelines, but wasp
nearly unstoppable once he
passed the blueline.
Kennedy added that Phil
Esposito, although a strong
player, could not measure up to
either, in that Esposito is strong
only in front of the net.
Calling him a "payoff man" he
added that the best hockey
Esposito played was during the
1972 Canada Russia series.
He also credited the Lions for
giving him his start in hockey. In
his hometown the Lions spon-
sored minor hockey, and he has
always had a "special place in
my heart for the Lions."
Vern Route, rookie Detroit Lion
pitcher, turned at the end of his
speech and said "this is what its
all about" as he pointed to the
banner across the back of the hall
which read "Support Crippled
Children"
In one moment he summed up
the situation by saying "with
your help he (Mike Gander,
London's "Timmy") can make it
a long way in the world.
Jim McKenney ad libbed
through his four minute speech,
throwing out one liners
throughout. When he spoke of
violence in hockey he said that he
plays "Better" when I'm
scared."
The Olympics was another
popular topic amongst the guests
and there were at least four sides
to it. Dalla Riva said that he
doubts the facilities will be ready,
particularly if there is another
work stoppage.
This raised the ire of Geris,
who has competed in the last two
Olympics and will compete in
Montreal, who said the facilities
will be ready and that they will
be held in Montreal.
Red Curran and Kim Kirten
both Olympic contenders,
presented opposite sides of the
spectrum.
Curran who led the Tillsonburg
Livingstones to the Canadian
basketball championship in 1952,
and later in the Olympics, felt
that the Olympics has become a
"political issue," He said it is an
honor to represent your country,
though the games have been over
commercialized.
Miss Kirten, the 14 year old
equestrian, was on the other side
of the fence. She is training in
hopes of competing in the 1980
Olympics.
But in the end, what can you
say about 16 sports people who
stood up and told jokes? You can
say that they were all great
people and great athletes.
Like pitcher Steve Rogers and
Dalla Riva, who spent 11 hours in
the Montreal airport yesterday
trying to get to London, and then
Exeter.
Or Glen Weir, of the Allouettes
who has been at all three dinners
sponsored by the Lions, just
because he likes being there.
Or how many of the celebrities
turn their fee back to the Lions.
Or how the Ladies Auxiliary
put on a fine meal that received
plaudits from everyone on the
dais.
And how 235 people got every
penny worth of their $25 and
helped people like Mike Gander,
who was the 'most distinguished
guest there.
'51 Leafs would
