At four o'clock, he begins the evening chores; it's feeding time again. He also fills the feed cart for tomorrow morning. By six- thirty he's milking, and around nine, he trudges back through the snow into the house. He pulls off his damp clothes, collapses into a chair and dreams about spring, This was an uneventful day. No frozen water bowls or pipes needed thawing. The chop box was full; he didn't have to grind any grain. The tractor started on the first try, and the blower didn't break. He didn't run out of fuel for the tractors, Thus he didn't have to blow snow for the fuel truck. The plow missed the mailbox, and no motorist straggled in asking him to pull his car out of a snowdrift. This was one of Bill's leisurely days. Most farmers don't have much to do these days. Do they? Where quality and service come first bosses as men alcoholics. Alcoholic mothers tend to blame their disease — and doctors believe it really is a ' disease -- on such causes as boredom, loneliness, depressiOn, marital troubles and fears of aging. Like men alcoholics, they tend to come from heavy- drinking families. Sixty-two percent of alcoholics have at least one alcoholic parent. The emotional havoc created Experts fear that alcoholism is engulfing women at an un- precendented rate. Until 10 years ago, male alcoholics outnumbered women by about five to one. But authorities on the subject believe there are now three male alcoholics to every female alcoholic, Or even only two. Precise figures are difficult to come by because so many woman alcoholics are "invisible" — housewives drinking secretly in their homes and caught out only by husbands and children. Job- holding women alcoholics, of course, run the same risks of discovery by colleagues and Colds cost lost time Colds and cold-like illnesses account for more than one-third of all days lost from work and approximately two-thirds of school absences attributed to sickness. A survey also revealed colds cost Canada an estimated half- billion dollars annually in lost wages, lost production and medical expenses. A public service organization working to encourage family health and safety, says the common cold is so common a person with average good health can expect to be bothered by three or four colds a year. How can we fight the cold war? Common sense is the best way to treat a cold because no real cure has yet been found through years of extensive research by medical scientists. Common sense tips are: — Treat a cold when it starts to prevent it from becoming more serious. Get plenty of rest and sleep. Take medication for the relief of sniffles and discomfort with lots of fluids, — Fresh colds are more con- tagious than older ones. Stay out of direct contact with people coming down with cold symp- toms. If you have a fresh cold, respect others by covering coughs and sneezes. Wash your hands frequently and do not mix your drinking glass, towel and other personal items with those of other members of your family. — Children have more colds than adults and are thus major cold-spreaders. Keep infected children indoors and do not let them visit their neighborhood chums until all cold symptoms have ended. — Studies show we have more colds during the winter heating season. Lowered humidity in heated rooms causes dry nose and throat, which makes us more susceptible to colds. The nose, throat and lungs work best when the air has a relative humidity or moisture' content of 45 percent. Purchase a humidifier, if your home or apartment is dry, or place pans of water on radiators to supply moisture for the air. — The disease we know as a cold is believed to be produced by as many as 100 different viruses. They show up in a variety Of symptoms ranging from a minor sniffle and stuffed nose to a disabling illness similar to in- fluenza, If your cold seems to last too long or your symptoms suggest an (illness more serious than a cold, see your doctor, A little cold can be a big nuisance, but it, should never be dismissed lightly, Foods exempt from dating Consumer and Corporate Affairs Minister Andre" Quellet has announced that meat, poultry and fish products packaged in retail stores will be exempt for one year from the durable life date regulations which come into effect on March 1, 1976. Thedurable life date is the date after which a food product is na longer expected to maintain its peak of wholesomeness, palatibility or nutritional value, This information, printed on the label of pre-packaged foods, will enable consumers to choose and better utilize these pre-. packaged foods, will enable consumers to choose and better utilize these pre-packaged products, During the one-year period retailers will, on a voluntary basis, declare the packaging date on the labels of the exempt products and provide durable life information, based on the packaging date, by means of in- store counter signs. Meanwhile, other foods with a durable life of 90 days or less will be required to show their "durable life date" on their labels as of March 1, 1976 as prescribed in the Food and Drugs Regulations. The term "best before" and in French "meilleur avant" will be required to appear immediately next to the durable life date. This marking will indicate to consumers that these products, if properly handled and stored, should be of high quality until the specified date. These products can still be sold beyond the stated date provided they are in an acceptable state, The Minister concluded that the voluntary system to be used for retail packed meat, poultry and fish products will provide consumers with essentially the same information as the com- prehensive system but in a dif- ferent form. "The purpose of the trial period", he added, "is to determine if the modified system in acceptable to consumers," The department will be assessing the merits of the new durable life dating system over this year. Last week a city fellow remarked, "The farmers won't have much to do these days." Let's follow a farmer, named Bill, through his day's work and discover whether the visitor was right. Bill rises at five a,m. and trudges one hundred yards to the barn. The snow is higher than the tops of his rubber boots. You can always meaaure the depth of the snow by the wet marks on the farmers' pant legs. After milking eighteen cows, he washes the equipment, Then he feeds a cartful of ensilage, which he loaded the night before, to the dairy cattle and the other livestock that fill the barn, Presently he wallows through more snowbanks between the barn and the implement shed. He passes his pickup which is just another white hump in the yard. The snow from last night's storm filled the box and drifted over the cab. Before he can move a tractor from the shed, he shovels the snow away from the door. With a blower mountedon a tractor, he clears a path for the milk truck from the road to the barn. When the milkman empties the bulk tank, Bill washes it groping through the steam from the hot water. Because the milkman won't return for two days, Bill may be able to sleep in tomorrow mor- ning — until six o'clock. Feeding the cattle is the next item on his agenda. He climbs into the loft to push down the hay to feed them and the straw to bedden them. He also scoops chop from a bin and mixes it with mineral. Soon he's climbing again; this time into the silo, Some farmers have automatic silo unloaders, while others still use forks. Another convenience that most farmers appreciate is an automatic stable cleaner. All Bill has to do is scrape the floor and push a button. The snow causes some complications, though, Because the lanes between the barnyard and the fields are blocked, he hasn't been able to draw the frozen manure away from the pile. . Instead he blows a tunnel t,hrough the barnyard. If he's lucky, he'll get close enough to move some of the manure with a tractor and loader.
