Two girls from Brazil
speak at Cromarty
By MRS, ROBERT LAING
CROMARTY
Two teen-age girls from Brazil,
Radona Ziki and Bete Maia,
described their country and
many of its customs at the
January meeting of the Marian
Ritchie Evening Auxiliary. The
girls are spending their summer
holidays in the Seaforth area.
Bete is with Sandra HulleY,
whose mother is the former
Margaret Walker of Cromarty.
During their interesting talk,
the girls showed slides of their
country including some of a
"planned" city, Brazilia which
was built about 15 years ago.
Brazilia built as a new capital for
Brazil, has an area for gover-
nment buildings, for banks, for
shops, etc. and also has areas of
parkland with man-made lakes to
which the water has all been
drawn.
The government of Brazil is
trying to encourage the people to
move from the densely-populated
area of the south-east coast to the
interior and more northern parts
by building universities, fac-
tories, etc., there, The northern
part of the country is too hot for
much settlement.
Brazil also has a city that is
being preserved as an historical
area and all buildings must
conform to the architecture of a
certain period, All the states of
Brazil speak the same language,
Portuguese, but both girls spoke
very good English, Bete said she
had to learn to think in English
since it was too slow to think in
Portuguese and then translate
into English.
Besides their slides the girls
'had picture postcards and
samples of some of their coun-
try's products.
Mrs. John Miller presided for
the meeting, opening it with a
poem, He Is Risen, and
prayer, ,Scripture was read by
Mrs. Eldon Allen, Mrs. Carter
Kerslake read the minutes and
Mrs. Lorne Elliott gave the
treasurer's report. Eight
members answered the roll call,
'Forgiveness,' Mrs. Carey
presided for the business when an
invitiation to the World's Day of
Prayer service at Thamesview
United Church, Fullarton was
accepted. Mrs, Philip. James was
appointed representative to the
Board of Managers, of Cromarty
Church,

Park fire brigade
on 24 hour call
The volunteer fire brigade
from Huron Park alternated
shifts Wednesday and Thursday
to provide round the clock
coverage in case of emergency
from the heavy snowfall in the
area.
The brigade felt that the 48
hour stint was necessary because
of emergencies that might arise
from the, snowbound town and
because they may be needed in
Crediton to fight fires.
The brigade in Crediton was so
badly snowed in that they were
unable to'move their trucks.
Only one call was received
throughout the period, a false
alarm at 3 am. on January 25.
