McKenny to be
at Lions dinner
The Sportsmen's dinner,
sponsored by the Lion's
' Club in Exeter has had its
ups and .downs with its
guests this year bathe list
is now final and it is an
impressive one,
The Lions had first
arranged to have baseball
star Willy Horton in at-
tendance but Horton had to
cancel his engagement
because he was to receive
an award the same , night.
With the departure •of
Horton the Lions were
•without a headline speaker,
but have now filled that
gap.
Jim McKenny, an 11 year
veteran with the Toronto
Maple Leafs of the NHL
was engaged late Wed-
nesday to appear at the
annual dinner.
McKenny, who was
drafted in 1963 from the
Toronto Marlboroughs, has
been a member of the
Leafs since 1964.
He started his pro career
in 1965 as a defenceman,
and for the first four years
was plagued with injuries
and difficulties that kept
him out of the lineup for
most of the year. Since 1969
however, he has been a
stalwart member of the
Leaf club and this year, the
offensively-minded def-
enceman was moved
forward to bolster the
Leafs' offence.
Along with McKenny,
another Leaf of a different
era, "'Feeder" Kennedy
will appear. Hall of Famer
Kennedy now breeds
horses in St. Marys.
The list is essentially the
same as the original one
with Tuffy Knight, WLU
football coach as master of
ceremonies and Tom
Gorman, National League
Baseball player at the top
of the list,

In his inaugural message to the
Middlesex County Beard of
Education this week, 1976
Chairman Jim Duffin called for
budget restraint and wider
communication with the public.
Mr. Duffin said it would be
necessary to practise the most
rigid budget scrutiny of any year
since the Board's inception in
1969, He urged the Budget
Committee to try to ensure that
educational programs do not
suffer and that the same level of
service in plant facilities and
transportation be maintained.

communication with the public,
Mr. Duffin sugge'Sted that one or
two public information meetings
be held this spring to assess
whether there would be a need for
a series of meetings across the
County, He said he would like to
see a one-time -distribution of the
Board's semi-monthly newsletter
to each family in the ,school
system. The letter . would let
families know that they could
receive future copies on a regular
basis through the schools. The
Board instructed that this be
carried out with the next issue of
the newsletter,
saw the A's missing a lot of
passes, and being out played by
the Si. Marys club. St. Marys
opened the scoring in the second
when SI, Marys had four shots in
a row on the A's net,
Poor clearing and sloppy
checking resulted in the
inevitable goal when St. Marys
banged in the fourth shot from
the side of the net.
They managed only one other
shot on net in the whole period, as
Exeter outshot them 5-5.
Exeter tied the game up in the
third after Brian Mercer took a
face off in the St. Marys end. His
shot was stopped by the goalie
who tailed to clear the rebound
and Dave Bogart scooped up the
loose puck and backhanded it into
the net. On the game, Exeter
outshot St. Marys 19-18.
The A's Wednesday night game
with Lambeth was cancelled.
They start the playoffs February
in Exeter at 5:00 p.m. against
Byron. They return to Byron for
the second game on the fifth. The
'other three games in the best
three of five series has yet to be
decided.

The Leafs continued their
domination in the Atom House
League as they blanked their two

week by identical scores.

period to pace the Leafs to their 5-

the second period, completing the
hat trick and Jamie Denny
rounded out the scoring when he
converted a pass from Tony
Jones.
Mark Christie picked up the
shutout for the Leafs in a game
that saw seven minor penalties
called.
Bobby Rook led the Leafs to
their other win over the Flyers as'
he picked up a hat trick. Glen
Lessard and Steve Morrissey
scored the other two goals as
Kevin Tripp picked up the
shutout in net for the Leafs.

called throughout the game

Robbie Dekoner opened the
scoring for the Exeter Avcos and
Doug Medd tied it before the end
of the first period, setting the tone
of the game as the Avcos would
go one ahead and the Northstars
would come back to tie it.
Steve Macdonald made it 2-1 at
the start of the second, and Greg
Lawrence added his first
unassisted marker of the game to
tie it. Jeff Rowe scored for the
Avcos in the third and Lawrence
tied it up to finish the scoripg off.
Two minor, penalties and a
game misconduct were handed
out.

Torn Lessard from the Huron
Park Penguins blanked Elaine's
Panet leads.
Juveniles
Pairs of goals by Phil Panet
and Brion Penhale led the
Juvenile team to an 8.5 victory
over the Delaware-Mount
Brydges squad in a penalty filled
game in Mount Brydges January
20.
Panet opened the storing early
in the first period followed by
Paul ,Shapton.
Delaware. then tied it up when
they scored two successive
power play goals less than a
minute apart. Norm Smith and
Bob Luckines connected for the
home team.
Pete Kincaid put Exeter back
out in front early in the second
period when he connected on
passes from Randy Regier and
Wayne Clark. Mike Desjardine
then set up Tom Hayter to make
it 4-2 on a power play gbal,
Delaware's Joe Doyle added
another one ;to close the gap
before the end of the second.
Regier and Desjardine, on a
power play, cemented the win for
Exeter to make it 6-3. Ron
McDougall added one for
Delaware before Penhale put in a
pair and Jerry Wolfs rounded out
the scoring for Delaware.
Exeter took 12 minors to
Delaware's four. Exeter also took
three misconducts, to Kincaid,
Larry Clarke and Fred Campbell
along with a game misconduct to
Campbell. Campbell and
Clarke's outbursts came in the
first period and the ensuing
automatic minors provided the
power play ; opportunities for
Delaware to score on,
Coffee Shop 3-0 behind the
shooting of Harold Borden.
Borden got the first and third
goals of the game to give the
Penguins their margin. Pete
Heath sandwiched in the second
marker unassisted.
Four minor penalties were
called.
Bantam
Huron Park was slammed
Saturday when they met Dor-
chester, as -Dorchester walked
away with a 6-1 win.
After a scoreless first period
Frank Schrevis popped in the
first marker. John Mark added
another before the end of the
period.
Dan Sutton added in the third,
along with singles to Ted
13ruloite, and Mark Van-
denbosch.
Huron Park's lone goal came in
the last five seconds of play when
Tony Underhill broke in all alone
and beat the Dorchester
goaltender to break the shutout.
Girls hockey
Shirley Denny's two assists
were instrumental in setting up
Huron Parkettes 3.1 win
over Lucan in girls' hockey ac-
tion this past week.
Yvonne Wells converted the
first Denny pass early . in the
opening frame to put the
Parkettes out in front. Marilyn
Riley and Denny then combined
with Darlene Smith on a three
way passing play to put the
winner in.
Denise O'Brien scored the only
goal for the Lucan team in the
second,p before Kim Kennedy put
in the unassisted insurance
marker.
The Exeter A's were the only
team able to make it through the
stormy weather of last week to
compete in minor hockey. They
took a 5-1 win in Dorchester on
Tuesday and then eked out a 1-1
tie with St. Marys Saturday as
they took part in St. Marys minor
hockey day,
The A's didn't take long to get
going in Dorchester when Dave
Atthill stole the puck at center
and skated in all alone to open the "
scoring after 34 seconds.
Before the game was a minute
old it was all over for Dorchester,
after Mark Parsons set up Dan
Bell for the second goal of the
game.
Things settled after the flurry
of the first minute, and the period
ended 2-0.
Jeff Fuller and Wayne Parsons
added a goal apiece in the middle
frame as Exeter outshot Dor-
chester 8-6 on the period,
Dave Bogart rounded out the
scoring in the third period at 3:59
when Steve Wells and Brian
Mercer set him up.
Just before the ten minute
mark of the period, Dorchester
banged in their only goal of the
game. It was the only period in
which Exeter was outshot, 9-2.
The wide margin allowed
Dorchester to tie Exeter in shots
on net, 20 each.
Only one minor penalty was
called in the game, in the third
'period against Dorchester,
The St. Marys "B" team gave
the A's a little more competition
on Saturday. The game was
played as part of SI. Marys Minor
