Belmont bumps cold Hawks 54
for fifth loss in seven starts
Despite losing 5-3, Manager
Fred Mommersteeg called the
Exeter Hawks game against
Belmont Sunday "the best we've
played against Belmont." The
game was played in Belmont,
The Hawks travelled to
Belmont on a bus with no heat,
and arrived toollatetfor alwarm-
up. Belmont had been prac-
ticing for about 20 minutes when
the Hawks stepped on the ice and
used the first period as a warmup
period.
The lack of preparation hurt
them, as Belmont stormed into a
3-0 lead in the first frame.
Rick Landon put the Hawks one
behind when he converted passes
from Barry Landon and Chuck
Peterson, Two more goals, less
the 30 seconds apart left the
Hawks with a three goal deficit at
the end of the first period.
Ken Pinder and Brian Taylor
set up John Van Gerwen for the
Hawks first goal of the game, to
put them within striking
distance.
Randy Foster scored the
eventual game winner for
Belmont, and Matt Muller scored
his only goal of the evening
unassisted to send the two teams
into the dressing room with
Belmont ahead 4-2.
The teams split goals in the
third frame, with Pirider scoring
for the Hawks and Paul Logan
scoring for Belmont.
Mommersteeg felt that the
score should have been 5-4, Matt
Muller had a goal disallowed
when the officials ruled that the
whistle had gone before the puck
entered the net,
It was the Hawks fifth loss in

ties earned last weekend.
This weekend is very important
to the Hawks. Morninersteeg
feels that they can put together
three wins in a row, against
Seaforth in Exeter, Friday,
Tavistock on Sunday in Exeter
and Mitchell in Mitchell, Tuesday
night.
The three wins would put them
back into third place where they
started before injuries and player
vacations started them on their
losing streak.
The Hawks currently reside in
sixth spot, well ahead of seventh
place Port Stanley with 22 points.

Here's a winter tip for
motorists from the ORtario
Safety League. Keep the car well
ventilated to avoid fumes and
prevent the inside glass from
misting up. A rear window open a
fraction of an inch helps circulate
heat, One or two windows open a
crack when parked will prevent
ice build-up on inside windows.
A see -saw battle between
Exeter and Seaforth in Atom
division hockey saw Exeter drop
a four goal lead and have to score
the final goal to earn a 6-6 tie in
exhibition hockey in Seaforth on
Sunday night.
Exeter's Scott Brintnell scored
the first of his two goals of the
evening when he converted a
pass from John Kernick for the
only goal of the opening frame.
Kernick opened the scoring in
the second period with an
unassisted goal and Dave Hayter
followed less than half a minute
later. Both goals came while
Exeter was playing shorthanded
with Ted Oke off serving a
tripping call.
Seaforth got on the scoreboard
when Jim Campbell popped in
their first marker of the game.
They were swamped again
though, as Exeter came back
with two quick goals, one by
Chris Van Gerwen and the other
going to Brintnell for his second
of the game.
With Exeter leading 5-1,
Seaforth suddenly found its legs
and they proceeded to score five
goals in a row, three before the
end of the second period.
John Dale popped in two goals,
less than ten seconds apart to
narrow the gap and Jerry Wright
added to the total to bring the
home team within one goal before
the end of the period.
Seaforth tied the game on a
goal by Marty Bedard, who put
them ahead for the first time in
the game just over a minute
later.
Brent Atthill salvaged the tie
for Exeter when he dumped in a
pass from Doug Scott while they
played with a man advantage.
. House League

Avco went ahead 2-0 on an
unassisted goal by Don .Beaver
and a marker from Kevin
Glasgow before Elaine's got back
in the game when Brian
Denomme scored the first of his
two goals.
Avco increased their lead later
in the game when Beaver scored
again, followed by Brad Scott
with the eventual game winner.'
Both goals were unassisted.

when they met their A coun-

six players and having to borrow
five so they could at least
change players.
Brian Mercer was scoring from
all over the place, as he popped in
six goals and assisted on another
four. Dave Bogart scored four,
Steve Pearce had two, and
singles went to Mark Parsons and
Dan Bell.

Ron Glenn spoiled the A's shutout
in a close checking game that
saw Exeter win 5-1.
Doug Brooks from Dave Bogart
opened the scoring for Exeter,
followed by Brian i Mercer's un-
.assisted power play goal. Glenn
scored when he deflected a
slapshot from the point by
Stewart Eddy into the net just
past the five minute mark. The
period ended 2-1.
A scoreless second period saw
most of the play between the blue
lines, as Lucan had three shots on
net while Exeter could manage
only one. Preston Dearing added
the insurance goal early in the
third when he slapped in a pass
from Larry Dawson. Mercer and
Brooks both scored their second
of the game giving the A's their
four goal margin.
Logan had nine minor
penalties, and one misconduct to
Glenn compared to five for the
A's.
