TO THE ELECTORS
OF THE
SOUTH RIDING
'UI+' TBE
COUNTY OF HURON.
OENTL 7 ME N,
The position of member of Parlia-
ment for the South Riding of the County
of Huron to which you elected me in
August 1872, having, become vacant by
the recent dossolutioo of the Hellas of
Commons, at the earnest solicitation of
many of the electors. representing all
classes and all shades of political opinion,
I again place myself at your disposal and
solicit ai reneal of that confidence which
on two former o.xaaions you generously
placed in me.w
Objections hive been- made to the
course the present Government have
thought it advisable in the interest of
honest legislation and public morality to
pursue indissolring Parliament. Gentle
men now in opposition, and who in the
late Parliament supported the present
leader of the opposition, object, that
the Government should hale met Parlia-
ment, should hare initiated the required
Iegidation and at lesat attempted to
carryon the Government of the country
with the present Houde, and if, they
tailed in satisfactorily ad doing then
appealed to the electoral body.
The objeeti..n is a plausible one on
the surface, but A calm retrospect of the
■pant, a moment's redaction as to the as -
4 toupding state of political morality
developed by the Pacific Scandal,inves-
tigation, will, I think, convince every
reasonable and thinking man who has et
heart the welfare of his country, that no
course was open to the Goiernntent, but
an appeal noir to the honest electors of
Canada. You can't expect a pure atream
from an impure source -no mere can
you expect pare and honest -legislation
from a; Parliament elected by the
grossest acts „f corruption and by the
most outrageous violations of law and
the cnnatitntioo. The late Pretnier
admitted on oath, and the feet was
abundantly established by documentary
evidence, that (el the eve of the late
general election ho received from s
public contractor (who subsequently
obtained the Pacific Railway; charter) a
large sum of reoney for the showed pur-
pose of debauching and covruptiag the
electoral body. 4 is ftirthcr admitted
that a large number of tbemembersctro-
stituting the late Perliatnght obtained
their seats by mean' of the fund thus
currmptly obtalted for rorrlg4 purposes.
The moral eye of the country hav-
ing been thus outraged and the c,netitu-
tion of the country having ' keen thus
violated, it beeamethe dutybi the ex-
isting government to give the people sn
opportunity of ptbnouneii>g at the polls
up••n these flagrant acts of maladutinis-
tration and pq'r; ng Parliament of the
element so illeg lly and corruptly• ad-
mitted.
