John Kernick's two goals and
an assist paved the way for a 4-2
Atom victory on Saturday as they
took on Belmont at the Belmont
arena.
Kernick set up Scott Brintnell
for Exeter's first goal at 5:02 of
the first frame, It was the only
,goal of the period.
Kernick made it 2-0 when he
banged in an unassisted effort at
6:17 of the second period. Exeter
was playing with 'a man ad-
vantage at the time, with Gary
Martin off serving out a two
minute kneeing call,
Just as the period was ending,
Belmont was suddenly back in
the game as they scored two
goals with less than two minutes
to go,
Pat Van Bommel got the first
one at 8:03 and then Rick Kor-
dyban tied the game with only 38
seconds left on the clock and
Exeter's Brian Blackburn off for
elbowing,
Mike Tiedeman put the game
away for Exeter with less than
two minutes gone in the third
period and Kernick finished off
the scoring at 7:54. Both goals
were unassisted:
Exeter took three of the four
penalties called.

Pee Wee "B"
After tying Lucan, the Exeter
Pee Wee "B" team took a severe
hammering this week, getting
blasted 12-1 by Lucan. The only
place Exeter made an impression
on the scoresheet was on the
penalty side of things, in which
they split with their Lucan
counterparts, two apiece.
Lucan was led by B. Hodgins,
with four goals and two assists.
He was followed by R, Glenn who
had a pair of goals and four
assists. S. Best had a pair as well,
and other goals went to M.
Deunk, with a pair and singles to
J. Hayter and B. Green. Wayne
Smith was the lone marker late in
the second period for Exeter.
The Pee Wee "B" team played
catch up hockey in their game
against Lucan, as they scored
three consecutive goals to tie the
visitors 3-3 in action at the Exeter
Arena on Sunday.
Lucan opened the scoring with
a goal by David Egan late in the
first period. Egan converted a
pass from Brad DeGraw to put
them on the scoreboard. Just
over a minute later Paul Wraith
set up Dean Scott to make it 2-0
With 13 seconds gone in the
second period, Lucan scored
again to make it 3-0 before Wayne

Smith of Exeter broke the
shutout when he found himself
with a good shot after taking
passes from Scott Batten and
Steve Rundle. The period ended
3-1.
Two goals by Trevor Boyle in
the third frame gave Exeter the
tie. Steve Riddell and Al Geiser
combined to set Boyle up for his
first goal at 4:29 of the period and
then, with just 19 seconds left to
play, RiddellIagain found Boyle
open who put the shot away to
tie the game up.
Lucan took the two penalties
called in the game, both of them
coming in the second period.
They managed to hold off the
Exeter power play.
Bantam "A"
It was a bad week for the
Exeter A's as they dropped their
one league game and one of their
two exhibition matches.
Exeter lost a squeaker to St.
Marys, 2-1 on Wednesday night in
St. Marys.
The A's managed to hold them
off the scoreboard in the first two
periods although they appeared
lackluster and were out shot 6-2 in
the first and 10-5 in the second.
They hustled a bit more in the
third and got the first goal of the
game when Dan Bell set up Dave
Bogart to make the score 1-0 with
'less than two minutes gone in the
period.
With only 3:10 left to play,
sloppy clearing in front of the A's
net resulted in a chance for ,St,
Marys that they capitalized on to
make it a tie game.
A minute later the St. Marys
team centered the puck from the
corner and the shot from the slot
found the mark for the eventual
game winner.
With forty seconds to go, Brian
Mercer and Bogart had a two on
one break, but Mercer failed to
pass the puck, and instead took it
to the corner. The A's were
unable to get a shot on net as time
ran out for them.
On the whole game, the A's
were outshot 26-15. The loss
leaves them with a record of nine
wins and three losses in league
action.
Coach Ron Bogart thinks that
"fate" interferes when his team
plays in tournaments, and it may
well be true, after the A's lost a 4-
0 lead to Sarnia in the Silver Stick
tournament on Thursday in
Watford.
With just 25 seconds gone in the
game, Bogart hit home on passes
from Mercer and Fletcher to give
the A's a 1-0 lead. Then two quick
goals, one at 4:24 by Bogart and
the other at, 5:59 by \ Wayne
Parsons after a two way passing
play gave Exeter a 3-0 lead,
Mercer scored at 8:42 to send the
A's to the dressing room with a 4-
0 lead over Sarnia.
The second period 'seemed to
spark Sarnia to life, and they
began to take hold. Exeter took
three consecutive penalties and
wound up killing them all off, but
the six minutes of playing
shorthanded took their toll and
they began to slow down.
Sarnia outshot the A's 15-6 in
the second period but stellar
netminding by Steve Wells held
them to only two goals.
Sarnia scored four goals in the
early stages of the third frame to
take a 6-4 lead as they directed 22
shots at Hoffman, who was in net
for the period,
At 13:41 Bogart scored his third
goal of the game, as the A's had a
power play attack going, along
with pulling Hoffman for the
extra attacker.
As the game drew to a close,
Preston Dearing banged one off
the cross bar and Dan Bell missed
a good opportunity when he shot
wide, failing to tie the score.
Sarnia ended up outshooting
the A's 41-22 but despite the
margin Coach Bogart felt the
flow of the game was not
always in their favor, saying that
the A's "just didn't have the legs
in the early part of the second and
third periods." He also credited
Hoffman and Wells for what he
called "outstanding net minding"
in keeping the score so
reasbnable.
The A's managed one win this
week, a 3-2 squeaker in exhibition
play over London, in London on
Sunday.
Doug Brooks powered the A's
to the win with two goals. He
scored his first early in the
second period when he banged in
Dan Bell's rebound to open the
scoring. London tied the score at
9:42.
Brooks put the A's ahead again
on the only goal of the second
period. It came at 5:16.
London tied the score early in
the tlIlrd frame, before Dan Hell
put the game away for the A's at
9:41 on a set up from Brooks.
The A's stifled the London team
when they pulled their goaltender
for the extra attacker but they
were unable to score on the
empty net.
Exeter outshot London 25-13
with good goaltending on Lon-
don's, part keeping the score
down.
Midget
Two third period goals one on a
power play, gave St. Marys a 4-3
win in Midget competition when
they played Exeter at the St.
Marys arena last Wednesday.
St. Marys drew first blood in
the second period when Exeter
had two men sitting in the penalty
box. Jim McCutcheon opened the
scoring at 6:12 with an unassisted
goal while Paul Pooley and
Darrell Preszcator were off
cooling their heels for roughing
and elbowing calls respectively,
Exeter came within three
seconds of killing the double
disadvantage before McCutcheon
scored.
Less then a minute later Exeter
tied the score when Paul Pooley
set Brian Horrell up at 6:54.
Not to be outdone, St, Marys
After four losses in a row, in-
cluding a 5-3 less against the New
Hamburg Screaming Eagles, the
Lucan-Ilderton Jets snapped
their winless streak as they
trounced Woodstock 7-2, and then
slumped again Tuesday night as
they fell to the Stratford Perths 5-
3.
The Jets drew first blood
against the Eagles in their
contest, as Don Galloway scored
at 5:50 of the first period to put
them into the lead,
Jaques Cousineau made it 2-0
at 6:58 of the first period, before
Don Burton put the" Eagles back
into the game `with a pal that
came 40 seconds after
Cousineau's, The two teams went
into the second period with the
Jets ahead 2-1.
Randy Roth added to the total
for the Jets after less than a
minute of play in the second, but
Roth's goal was the end of the
scoring for the Jets as the Eagles
scored two more times to tie the
game at 3 each. Both second
period goals for the Eagles went
to Gary Yantzi.
The two clubs fought out meat
pf the third period tied, until 15:51
when John Chamber's scored to
clinch the game for the Eagles.
Jim Springall added the in-
surance goal at 17:18,
New Hamburg outshot the
visiting Jets 49-35. Sonny Pen-
nington was in net for the Jets.
Pennington has played nearly
every game so far this, year for
the Jets, and currently stands
sixth amongst the league's
goaltenders with a 4.39 goals
against average.
came back with a goal at 7:26,
another unassisted effortbyMark
O'Keefe. Exeter tied the score
before the end of the period when
Dennis Preszcator banged in a
goal, It was a power play effort
with Don Baird off for St. Marys.
Paul Pooley and Randy Fisher
combined to give Exeter a 3-2
lead near the halfway mark of the
third and it looked like Exeter
would come out with a victory
until the dying minutes of the
game when St. Marys came back
with two quick goals.
Rick Coddington and Phil
Arthur set up Baird for the tying
goal at 13:41. Again it was a
power play goal, with Exeter's
Ron Bilcke off for an interference
call.
Jamie Dunbar and Baird then
set Arthur up for the go ahead
goal just 18 seconds later to
cement the win for St. Marys.
In all, 16 penalties were called
during the, game, ivitp nine of
them going to Exeter.
Juvenile
After mounting a 3-1 lead on
twp second period goals, the
Juveniles dropped back and
allowed two third period markers
that gave the home team St.
Marys Juveniles a 3-3 tie on
Wednesday.
Tim Staffen opened the scoring
for Si. Marys when he took a pass
from Tom Bailey. Exeter's Brian
Penhale tied it up near the end of
the first with the first of his two
goals of the game.
Penhale opened the scoring for
Exeter in the middle frame when
he converted passes from Clarke
and Steve Knight. Pete Kincaid
put Exeter two up, again on a
pass from Knight before the
period ended.
Exeter held the lead well past
the halfway mark of the third,
when Bailey put St. Marys within
striking distance on a power play
goal with Clarke off. Less than 30
seconds later Staffen scored his
second goal of the game to tie it
up for St. Marys.
Referee Terry Warboys called
a total of thirty penalties to the
'two teams with 16 going to
Exeter. Bob Staffen and Mike
Desjardine picked up fighting
majors in the third period and left
the game when they were
slapped with game misconducts.
The Juveniles fared a little
better when they played St.
Marys again on Sunday, taking
the game 4-1.
Tom Bailey of St. Marys
opened the scoring in the first
period, but Jim Ferguson tied it
up before the period ended.
Mel Osgood scored in the
second period from Phil Panet
and Fred Campbell to give
Exeter their victory margin.
Osgood also scored an unassisted
effort in the third period.
Randy Regier rounded out the
scoring for the Exeter team.
It was a different story Sunday
in Ilderton as the Jets never
trailed the. Woodstock Royals in
their 7-2 win,
Jaques Cousineau with a pair,
and Randy Roth, Terry Johnson,
Jim Blake, Scott Graham and
Doug Galloway paced the Jets to
their win.
Tom Murphy and Torn Glover
were the only replies for the
Royals.
The Jets took 50 of the 72
minutes in penalties called, a fact
which upset manager Don
Urbshott.
Urbshott felt that referee
Barry Brownlee was partial
towards the Royals and was out
to get the Jets, particularly Bill
White.
to Ontario Hockey Association
officials and has already written
a letter protesting it. He hopes to
meet with league officials and
Brownlee to discuss the matter.
The Jets returned to their
slump Tuesday night when they
dropped a close and important
game to the Stratford Perths in
Stratford.
Stratford and the Jets were tied
in fifth .with 22 points going into
the game, but the loss by the Jets
moves the Perths up a notch and
they have a game in hand on the
Jets.
Jaques Cousineau opened the
scoring early in the game for the
Jets, John St. Cyr tied it before
the period ended.
A short handed goal by Morris
Elsley put the Perths ahead at
10:16 of the second frame, before
the Jets' Don Carter tied it again
late in the second.
Two quick goals by Stratford's
Ron Ryan and Jerry Harrigan
ended the Jets hopes before the
third period was yet five minutes
old.
Scott Graham put the Jets back
in the game at 13:05, but a goa,Lby
Mitch Kennedy, with Pennington
out of the Jets' net ended the
game. Pennington faced 41 shots,
while the Jets replied with 31.
