Minor Hockey has started to
gear itself up again after the lull
over the Christmas holidays. Six
games were played this past
week, with Exeter coming up on
the short end of three of the
games. The three wins went to
the Atoms and Bantam A's in
exhibition play and the Juveniles
in regular league play,
Atoms
The Exeter Atom team shut the
door on a team from London in
exhibition play on December 30,
beating the Southwest Optimists
3-0.
John Kernick led the Exeter
squad with two goals. He opened
the scorn) g from Scott Brintnell
in the first period at 6:52.
Brett Batten added the in-
surance goal at 8:39 of the second
on an unassisted marker. Ker-
nick scored again in the third
frame to finish off the scoring.
Two penalties were called in
the entire contest, one to each
team. Both came in the second
period,
Pee Wee "B"
The Exeter Pee Wee "B" team
would probably rather not have
played this past week, as they
took two severe drubbings, 11-5 at
the hands of Huron Park and 7-1
to Ilderton.
Dave Newton put Exeter out in
the lead in the opening minutes of
the Huron Park game on an
unassisted goal. Just 13 seconds
later it was all tied up again as
Don Stuckless converted a pass
from Rich Lather to put Huron
Park on the scoreboard,
Newton popped in his second at
5:36 of the first and put Exeter
ahead 2-1 before two quick goals
by Huron Park, one to Andy
O'Brien and the other to Lather
put Huron Park out in front going
into the second period.
The Exeter squad managed to
stay with Huron Park in the
second period as they tied it in the
first minute on a goal by Trevor
Boyle from Steve Riddell.
Huron Park again took another
two goal lead with Stuckless
getting his second of the game
and Lather completing his hat-
trick.
Wayne Smith and Boyle, with
his second of the game, tied the
score and sent the two teams into
the third period at 5-5.
The third period was all Huron
Park as they came up with six
unanswered goals in the space of
three minutes. Pat Devris scored
the game winner and insurance
goals back to back a minute
apart.
Stuckless picked up the hat-
trick and Lather, who was
scoring from every angle on the
ice, added his fourth and fifth
goals of the contest,
Each team took three of the six
penalties called in the game.
An early second period goal by
Trevor Boyle was the only
scoring Exeter could manage
againstildertonwhen they played
them Saturday at the arena.
Ilderton took a first period lead
on goals by Mark Meulendyks
and Steve O'Neil. Exeter closed
the gap in the second on Boyles
goal when he converted a pass
from Alan Geiser just before the
floodgates opened and Ilderton
dumped in five goals. --
Norm Campbell gottheliat trick
for Ilderton and Dave Noble
• picked up a pair.
Exeter took three of the five
penalties called and managed to
kill them all off.
Bantam "B"
The game between Exeter and
Ilderton's Bantam "B" teams
was over in the first 15 seconds
when Ilderton's captain, Brian
Murray took a pass from Barry
O'Neil and gave Ilderton all the
points they needed as they
started on their way to a 12-0 rout
of the Exeter squad.
Brad Armitage added two
more and O'Neil picked up his
first of the game to give Ilderton
a 4-0 lead to carry into the second
period.
Murray added two more to the
total in the second period for the
hat trick and Art Gregory and
Brad Carter made it 8-0.
Gregory and Rick Lee scored
again in the third, along with
Murray who scored numbers four
and five of the game. As well as
his five goals Murray had three
assists. Dick Roberts, in net for
the Ilderton team, picked up the
shutout.
Exeter took six of the eleven
penalties called, including a
fighting major and game
misconduct late in the third
period to Bishop.
Bantam "A"
The Exeter Athletic's long
layoff over Christmas gave the
CFB Royals a jump in their
exhibition game played Sunday,
but the A's managed to battle
back to eke out a 6-5 victory over
CFB.
The Royals got off to a good
start, beating a sluggish A's team
for two goals in the first period,
The A's were foiled around the
CFB net by fine goaltending on
several excellent opportunities.
The second frame looked like a
repeat of the first with the Royals
adding to their total with two
goals in the early minutes of the
period before the Exeter club
could get themselves on track.
Exeter stormed back with five
goals, starting with Jeff Fuller's
pass to Wayne Parsons who
broke CFB's stranglehold on the
scoreboard.
At 4:38 of the second Dan Bell
got the first of his two goals on a
power play effort. He was set up
by Brian Mercer and Dave
Bogart. Fuller converted a pass
I from Dave Atthill to narrow the
gap to one goal and Brian Mercer
tied the score at 4 each when he
took a pass from Preston Dearing
and scored what Coach .Ron
Bogart called a "picture goal."
Eleven seconds after Mercer
tied the score Bell put the A's
ahead for the first time in the
game. Mercer and Dearing got
assists.
At 3:12 of the third period CFB
picked up the tying goal on a
power play effort while Bell was
off cooling his heels for high
sticking.
The final goal of the game
came from Mercer, who picked
up a pass from Dearing and
converted into the winner.
The A's will be taking part in
the Silver Stick Tournament in
Watford this weekend,
Juvenile
Two goals in the first and
second periods gave the Exeter
Juveniles a 4.2 victory over
Dorchester in a penalty filled
game played at the arena on
Sunday.
Steve Knight opened the
scoring for Exeter on assists
from Pete Kincaid and Bryon
Davis. Randy Regier added to the
Exeter total before the period
was completed, giving Exeter a
2-0 lead for the second frame,
Exeter hit first -again in the
second period when Tom Hayter
converted a pass from Jim
Ferguson for the eventual game
winner.
Dorchester finally got on the
scoreboard with less than five
minutes to go in the period when
Chuck Legg beat goalie John
a Gould for the first to make
the score 3-1.
Bryon Davis put the game out
of reach 16 seconds later, with
Dorchester finishing off the
scoring with one goal in the third
period.
Exeter took nine of the fifteen
penalties called in the game,
including a concurrent minor and
major to Larry Clarke in the
second period, Dorchester's
Dave Good picked up two majors
for butt ending and his fracas
with Clarke as well as a match
penalty for the butt ending.

this year, with a league record of
12.DeGurse, Randy Roth and
Rick Martin all have three
shorthanded goals. One of the
reasons that Jets have had so
many shorthanded goals and so
many power play goals against
them is that they lead the league
in penalties, with a total of 592

Rick Fifield is the Jets leading
scorer with 17 goals and 7 assists,
