District High School received
Ontario Scholar status. They
were top student Cynthia Gunn,

collision south of Exeter. Driver

damage to the home of Don and
Margaret Sandercott at Grand
Bend. Escaping injury were Mr.
and Mrs. Sandercott and their
infant grandchild. All were
sleeping when the lightning hit.
. . Fire destroyed the home of
Mr. and Mrs. William Regier on
Huron County Road 2. Mrs.
Regier's mother, Mrs. Irene
Farwell, died in the fire.
. A 30 percent hike in taxes for
residents of Usborne township in
1976 was announced.
. . . Recreation director Jim
McKinlay noted one of Exeter's
Canada Week balloonagrams had
been returned from Picton.
. . . Terry Crisp of the
Philadelphia Flyers appeared in
the big parade highlighting the
Ilderton Centennial parade.

. . Many Exeter area residents
travelled to Vanastra to meet
Progressive Conservative
federal leader Joe Clark during
his Huron county visit,
. . Grand Bend announced an
increase of 12 percent in the
municipal taxes for 1976.
. . A large barn on the farm of
Eric Finkbeiner was destroyed
by fire. The blaze was believed to
have been started by lightning.
. . . Exeter council found them-
selves in the middle of a heated
debate regarding the proposed
site of the new arena. Three
groups, the Exeter Agricultural
Society, the Mid-Western Rodeo
committee and the local hor-
semen and turf club are opposing
the site which would use part of
the race track.
, The Huron Country Playhouse
celebrated its fifth anniversary.

August 5
. Marilyn Ford of Dashwood
was crowned queen of Fried-
sburg Days. Princesses were
Diane Ducharme and Mary Van
Osch.
. While production was
reduced, Canadian Canners
continued processing of the
seasons pea crop despite
damages suffered in the recent
wind storm.
. . . Exeter council received a
warning from the Ministry of the
Environment about the
"deplorable condition" of the
municipal dump.
. . . Exeter council approved the
rezoning of 12.6 acres of land
owned by Len Veri in the town's
north end from industrial to
commercial,
• While the fund total reached
over $75,000, chairman Ron
Bogart of the South Huron
Recreation Centre finance
committee issued a plea for
canvassers.
August 12
. . Exeter recreation director
Jim McKinlay said the decision
regarding laying off employees of
the Recreation and Parks
Committee was up to council. The
committee has run out of funds,
• Grand Bend Chamber of
Commerce allocated $2,800 of the
$6,431 profits from the 1976
Buffaloburger Fest to purchase a
sign advertising the Huron
Country Playhouse.
. • , Donna Mitchell, 21, of Grand
Bericl,iwas killed in a car trash.
Miss Mitchell was well known as
the nursery school teacher at
Grand Bend,
. With the demolition of the
railway station at Bengali, the
railroad era for the village was
coming to an end.
Authorities announced that
Roger Layton, 33, of Brucefield
had no traces of swine flu in his
body following his death. Medical
examination disclaimed earlier
diagnosis of the swine flu.
August 19
• . Doug Gould, president of the
Exeter and District Heritage
Foundation, announced the group
had received a grant of $47.100 for
restoration of the town hall,
. . About 350 people moved into
Exeter park as the Ontario
Campers Association held its
annual campout,
. . . Exeter council agreed to
authorize a letter of intent to a
company to provide steel for the
town's new arena.
, . Claude and Pearl Rau of St.
Clair Shores were killed on high-
way 21 near St. Joseph. The
couple were related to many area
residents.
. . . Reeve Bob Sharen laid a
charge of unnecessary noise after
numerous complaints had been
received from neighbours of a
cottage near the main street.
. . , Rene and Julien Boogemans
of Hensall won the annual Grand
Bend Canoe Race from the
Greenway bridge to the Grand
Bend harbour.
. • . A report by the Ausable-
Bayfield Conservation Authority
informed Grand Bend council
that river bank erosion control
could cost $680,000.
August 26
. . Kongskilde Ltd. of Exeter
were awarded an "A" award
from the Ministry of Industry and
Tourism for achievement during
the past three years,
. . . Mayor Bruce Shaw an-
nounced that the race track site
for the new arena in Exeter was
definite. An alternative site had
been discussed.
. . . About 25 persons attended a
meeting in Hensall to hear
council report on work already
done at the arena as well as
further work needed to bring the
arena up to standard, A target of
$50,000 to $80,000 to be raised
locally „has been set. Total cost
will be $200,000.
. . . Crediton bantams won the
WOAA championship two
straight over Kincardine,
Crediton juveniles also won the
WOAA crown, defeating
Wingham.
September 2
. • . Lynne Brooks of Exeter was
crowned Zurich Bean Queen.
Over 10,000 people attended the
annual event,
. . Exeter PUC manager Hugh
Davis predicted Ontario
residents could be faced, with
electrical rationing sometime in
the future.
. , . Exeter council called tenders
for the South Huron Recreation
Centre after they were convinced
by members of the finance
committee that sufficient funds
could be raised.
. A member of the Exeter turf
club suggested obtaining a court
injunction to halt plans to con-
struct the arena on the race
track.
. More than 60 residents of
Grand Bend objected to plans by
Southcott Parklands Limited to
establish a marina in the vicinity
of the old river bed.

. . . A petition signed by several
Exeter merchants was presented
to council. The petition objected
to the rezoning of land in the
towns north end to commercial

. , After a shaky start, the
Exeter Midwest Rodeo had a
very successful event in 1976.
• A London engineer refused to
certify the safety of the Exeter
arena for use this winter.
September 16
. Harold Lewis of Ingersoll was
killed while walking,along River
Road in Grand Bend.
Jack Parsons, president of the
Exeter turf club, reported that
group still plans to seek an in-
junction against Exeter council,
restraining the town from using a
portion of the local race track as
a site for the new South Huron
Recreation Centre.
. John Stephens, chairman of
the South Huron Recreation
Centre, said news that 75
percent of the costs of the centre
would be covered by grants was
"just like Christmas".
Over 170 persons turned out at
the Pineridge Chalet to honour
Peter McNaughton, an active
citizen of the village of Hensall,
for many years.
. Kirkton fair escaped
threatening inclement weather
and came through with another
fine event. Admissions were

exhausted Recreation and Parks
committee. Employees were
facing layoffs and plans were
considered to close the office.
. . Huron County secondary
school teachers ratified a con-
tract which will cost the
ratepayers of the county a 7.7
percent increase.
. Exeter's population grew to
3,441, up from 3,354 at the time of
the last census in 1971.
. . About 35 Exeter merchants
heard Bob Pollock of the Ministry
of Industry and Tourism speak on
downtown revitalization and
promotion.
• .. Gerry Smith of Exeter picked
up two first place awards for his
fiddling ability at the Western
Fair in London.
. , . Several residents 'of the
Senior and Gidley Streets area
present Exeter council a petition
opposing a 14 unit apartment

. The Exeter Leo Club received
its charter. Connected with the
Exeter Lions Club, the Leos are
open to area young people.
. . The cost of the new South
Huron Recreation Centre was set
at $1,016,500, While the figures
were higher than anticipated
and some committee members
were disappointed, engineers for
the projects were pleased ter-
ming it a "good price".
. , . Area residents danced to the
music of Guy Lombardo and his
orchestra at Huron Park, an
event staged by the Exeter
Heritage Foundation.
... The Exeter Fall Fair, held in
emergency facilities since the
local arena was not available,
attracted one of the largest
crowds in recent years.

the death of Mrs, Florence Wein,
62, of Dashwood,
. . . Mayor Bruce Shaw an-
nounced that after a meeting with
officials of Wintario and Com-
munity Centres grants, Exeter
area residents would be required
to raise only $245,000 for the new
recreation centre.
. . Exeter RAP committee
refused to accept the task of
relocating the horse barns after
being requested to handle that
responsibility by Exeter council.
. . . While council has hoped to
make some money on the
demolition of the Exeter arena,

Floyd Wein with non•capital
murder in the death of his wife,
Florence. A preliminary hearing
was set for November 22.

Parklands Limited told Grand
Bend council they were
questioning the right of Reeve
Bob Sharen to take part in
discussions of objections to the
village. zoning bylaw, Their
position was based on the fact
that Mr. Sharen was a
shareholder in' a firm purchasing
property governed by the bylaw.

Western Rodeo committee drew
only eight persons and once again
the future of the annual event was
being questioned,

District High School annual
commencement was Tony Kyle.
. The Grand Bend Lioness Club
received its charter. Club
president Sharon Soldan accepted
the charter.
November 4
. Exeter council named two
members to a committee to help
the turf club find a new home for
the race track but refused to
commit any funds to the project.
It was suggested the move could
cost up to $100,000.
, . . . Exeter councillor Garnet
Hicks recommended council
meet once a month without the
public or press being present.
. . . Several large donations,
including a $5,000 cheque from
Canadian Canners, boosted the
recreation centre fund drive
leaving only $75,000 to go.
. . With the exception of $300
damage at J.A.D. McCurdy
Public School at Huron Park,
Hallowe'en in the area was guiet.
. . . Grand Bend and area
Chamber of Commerce. elected
Bert Albertson president, taking

November 11
. . As a result of a lack of in-
terest, the Exeter Mid-Western
Rodeo was suspended for one
year.
. . . Constable Jim Barnes joined
the Exeter Police Department.
He came to Exeter with eight
years experience on the OPP.
. . . Harold Patterson, chairman
of the Recreation and Parks
committee, announced the RAP
committee would continue
operation despite the fact that
funds were expected to run out in
two weeks.
. The Grand Bend Chamber of

a Lions Club proposal to obtain a
site for long range recreation
facilities.

. . . Exeter Reeve Derry Boyle
announced he was opposed
Mayor Bruce Shaw in the
December election.
... Bill Morley was acclaimed to

November 25
. . . Donald Southcott of Grand
Bend denied charges made by
Huron-Middlesex MPP Jack
Riddell surrounded the purchase
of land near the Severn Park
property recently assigned to
Grand Bend from the provincial
government.
. . . Sixty-two employees at
Bendix Home Systems in Hensall
were laid off. The workers were'
employed in the mobile home
plant.
... After demolition of the Exeter
arena was commenced, it was
discovered that the structure was
in worse physical condition than
had been originally inspected.
. President Jack Stewart of the
Exeter District Co-operative told ,
200 members , at the annual
meeting that while it was another
successful year, profits were
down due to increasing costs.
. . James Murphy, managing
director of the Huron Country
Playhouse said critics of the
Playhouse were "off-base"as
they were singling out an in-
dividual performance rather
than looking at the overall pic-
ture at the theatre.

Commission authorized a rate
increase of 21.2 percent for
electrical energy,
, The annual meeting of the
Exeter Community Credit Union
authorized the amalgamation 'of
the Exeter and Clinton credit
unions,
. Ed Melanson assumed his
duties as clerk of the village of
Lucan, taking his oath of office
from retiring Clerk Mrs. M.L.
Gibson.
.. • . Brian Kipfer of Dashwood
was 'named Sportsman of the
year by Canadian Snowmobile
and Cycle Sport.

regarding land purchases close to

. Neil McRann's horse "Dart

... A large crowd lined Exeter's
main street for the annual Santa
Claus parade, this year spon-
sored by the Exeter and District
CB Radio Club.
. A swimming pool for Kirkton
was certain to become a reality
by summer of 1977 as a tender for
$112,770 was let tia Frank Van
Bussel and and Sons of Lucan.
. . Huron-Middlesex MPP Jack
Riddell said there was no truth to
rumours that Ontario Hydro had
decided to go ahead with plans
for a nuclear power reactor
between Bayfield and Grand
Bend.
December 23
. . , Mary Cudmore whose
husband Alvin was killed in a car
crash two years ago was awarded
$192,661 for herself and her
children in an Ontario Supreme
Court settlement,
. . Five Exeter residents were
singled out for outstanding
contribution to their community.
The five'were Dr. M.C. Fletcher,
Alma Godbolt, Carf Cann and
Russ and Shirley Wilhelm. The
awards were presented by the
community.

Brady of CFPL radio broadcast

Exeter Heritage Foundation to
raise funds to restore the

swimming pool committee
revceived approval to build an

results of a canvass forpledgesto

. . Grand Bends second annual
Buffaloburger Fest was a big
success despite some wet
weather. Between 7,500 and
• 10,000 persons attended the event.
A new feature, children's day on
Sunday, was very popular.
. Record prices were paid by
buyers at the annual Hensall
Spring Fair and Beef Feeder Calf
Club Sale. An amazing $1.45 per
pound was paid by Harry Winters
for Bill Kinsman's 893 pound
champion steer.
, . The annual Hensall Kinsmen
Fiddlers Contest drew huge
crowds of fiddlers and music
lovers. Ed Gyurki of Woodstock
won the championship, edging
out Don Reed of Sudbury.
The Lucan arena fund
raising drive got off to a good
start with a donation of $25,000
from the Lucan Memorial
Community Centre Ladies Kit-
chen Committee.
. . . Gerald N. Legault of Exeter
was killed in a two car crash
south of Exeter. Mrs. Diane Kaak
of Dashwood, driver of the other
car, and her daughter who was a
passenger, were injured.
. . The first production of the
summer at the Huron Country
Playhouse "You're A Good Man
Charlie Brown" was met by
enthusiastic response from
audiences and critics.
. . The Usborne and Hibbert
Mutual Fire Insurance Company,
now located in Exeter, marked
its one hundredth anniversary.
The company was started by
farmers in the two townships to
protect themselveseptamelessesea
. . A number of large donations
from area industries and
retailers boosted the Exeter
arena fund to over $50,000. Large
donors were Dashwood
Industries, $20,000; Conklin
Lumber, $5,000; and Northland
Mobile Homes, $10,000.
. Peter Weekes, 14, of Exeter,
was named as one of the most
valuable players in a cricket
tournament won by Huron
County in Windsor. The Huron
club downed Toronto, Hamilton,
Waterloo and Windsor to gain the
title.
. . Hensall clerk Bob Heil said
the village's arena should be in no
danger of being closed due to
safety standards. Improvements
were made last year to bring the
arena up to standard.
. . . The congregations of Wesley
and St. Thomas Anglican Church
joined with Granton United to
honour Rev. Mary Mclnally who
was leaving to go to Mt. Elgin.
. Hundreds enjoyed a picnic in
Exeter's Riverside Park to
honour De. Mac Fletcher after 50
years service to the community.
It was estimated that Dr. Flet-
cher had delivered 3,000 Exeter
babies.
