Excellent teamwork has
resulted in 1976 being a most
successful year for United Co-
operatives of Ontario, according
to President Allan McIntosh.
Mr. McIntosh and UCO
General Manager, Julian Smith,
told the delegates to the Co-
operative's 29th annual meeting,
December 14, that sales figures
had topped 292 million dollars,
the highest in UCO's history.
The success of UCO waS at-
tributed to strong co-operation
between board and management
and between member/owners
and employees.
A decline in world fertilizer
prices resulted in a nine per cent
reduction in savings over 1975
but a patronage return to
members of 3.5 million dollars
was still declared,
1976 was a year of growth for
UCO with new facilities, ad-
ditions and renovations taking
place at numerous branches and
member .co-operatives across
Ontario. To keep in step with the
changing needs of Ontario's
rural communities, the Co-
operative opened three building
supply centres as well.
UCO's petroleum services
were upgraded during the year
with several new gas bars, key
lock pumps and bulk petroleum
depo,ts being added to serye9
members' needs.
Mr. Smith reported that 3,392
new members had been added
during the year and that
membership as a whole had sup-

According to Maurice Bean,
first vice president of the Huron
County Federation of
Agriculture, farmers should take
oil and gas leases seriously. A
number of inquiries have been
coming in from the area offices in
this regard, he said.
Mr. Bean said farmers should
request the person representing
the oil company to produce his
licence from the Ministry of
Energy before discussing any oil
leasing arrangements. The going
rate for leasing land is $1.00 per
acre, however the Federation of
Agriculture notes that some
farmers have been approached to
lease their property at fifty cents
per acre.
Farmers should know, Mr.
Bean said, that the lease will be
registered to their deed for the
• total. term of the lease .an.oil
company is in default of payment
in subsequent years the land
owner will discover that this
lease remains attached to his
ported their Co-operative's
future by purchasing over $2
million in debentures.
In a discussion of future pro-
jects the delegates were told that
UCO's new Chatham seed corn
plant is nearing completion and

IN MEMORIAM--:-
FERG — In loving memory of
Blighton who passed away one year
ago, December 30th,1975.
Softly the leaves of memory fall
Gently we gather and treasure them
all
Unseen, unheard he is always near
Still loved, still missed and ever dear
Always remembered by his wife
Alice, Bernice, Charles and
grandchildren. 53c
GLANVILLE — In loving memory of
a dear daughter and sister, Velma
Joyce Glanville who God called home
on December 28th, 13 years ago.
In my father's house are many
mansions
The blessed Master said
And to prepare His blessed place
He travelled on ahead
Our loved one too has journeyed on
And free from every care
Within God's many mansions
She is waiting for us there.
Lovingly remembered by mom,
dad, sisters Carolyn and family, Judy
and family, Debbie, Shellie and
Terry. 53c
JONES — In loving memory of a
dear husband and father, Lloyd
Edwin who passed away, 2 years ago,
January 1, 1975.
We little thought when leaving home
You would no more return
That you in death, so soon would
sleep
And leave us all to mourn.
To us all you were someone special
Loving and kind and true
You will never be forgotten Lloyd,
For we thought the world of you.
From the cluster of beautiful
memories
You return to us each day
As in the hour you passed away
We hide the tears when we speak
your name
But the ache in our hearts remains
the same.
Life goes on we know its true
But not the same since we lost you.
Lovingly remembered by wife
Helen and family. 53
JONES — In loving memory of a
dear brother-in-law who suddenly
passed away, 2 years ago, January 1,
1975.
He had a nature you could not help
loving,
And a heart that was purer than gold
And to those who knew him and loved
him
His memory will never grow cold.
Sadly missed by brother-in-law,
Arnold. 53p
RODD — In loving memory of our
mother Mabel, who passed away one
year ago, January 2, 1976.
In our hearts your memory lingers
Sweetly tender, fond and true
There is not a day, dear mother
That we do not think of you.
Lovingly remembered by Barbara
and La Verne, Ferne and Jack,
Audrey and Lorne and families. 53p
SQUIRE — In loving memory of a
dear wife mother and grandmother,
Vera E. Squire who passed away 5
years ago,December 31, 1971,
She was always thoughtful, loving
and kind,
What a glorious memory to leave
behind,
They say time heals and helps us to
forget
But time has only proven, how much
we miss you yet.
Lovingly remembered by husband
Frank and family. 53p
SQUIRE — In loving memory of a
dear mom, Minnie May who passed
away on December 27,1975.
Just a thought from us who loved
you,
Just a memory fine and true,
In our hearts you'll live forever
Because we thought the world of you.
Always loved and sadly missed by
her family. 53p

deed until either the oil company
releases it or the farmer gets
legal help to provide that the said
lease is in default.
The Ontario Ministry of
Natural Resources provides all
oil companies with a standard
lease with sections to !protect the
land owner from future
liabilities. This lease is not in-
tended to restrict in any way the
use of other lease forms in regard
to drilling for oil. All oil com-
panies must also apply to the
Ministry of Energy for a drilling
permit. At that point the Ministry
of Natural Resources insists on a
strict control of all construction
to protect the land owner.
Mr. Bean recommends that
farmers should get legal advice if
they are in any doubt about en-
tering into an agreement with an
oil company.
In practice, he points out, it has
been established that farmer
leasing with major oil companies
have few complaints or concerns
but farmers should investigate
and get as much information as
possible before signing,

Huron County Council on
Friday approved a proposed
budget from the Social Services
Committee for 1977, subject to
review by the new council and the
approval of the Ministry of
Community and Social Services.
The budget totals $337,400 of
which the County's share is
$107,930,
Next year $268,900 will be set
aside for general assistance as
compared to $276,900 last year,
homemakers and nurses services
next year will be upfrom $8,000 to
$8,500, supplementary aid in 1976
was $9,600 and will be $12,100 in
1977.
Special assistance will be in-
creased by $300 from the 1976
total of $11,400 to $11,700 and
administration costs in 1977 are
expected to total $76,100 as
compared to $72,200 in 1976.
The Social Services Committee
caseload as of December 1 this
year stood at 117 as compared to
109 in December 1, 1975. This
number of cases is in the range
experienced for the period of
January to March 1976, the
committee reported, which is
considered normal.
The highest months are
November to March, as job op-
portunities are fewer during the
winter months in the local area.
Part of the increase in
November, the report explained,
is due to various lay offs in the
area. "One bright spot however is
that Dominion Roads in Goderich
has started to recall some of the
75 men which they laid off in
November.
Three of the department ern-
