It certainly brought back memories of Canada Cup '76. The brand of hockey was probably not quite up to the Canada Cup but it was more exciting and entertaining than a regular Wednesday or Saturday NHL telecast. The present series between teams from Europe and the WHA could be the start of regular season games between teams from the two continents, Ben Hatskin of the WHA has announced that a playoff series of eight games, four in each country has been arrang- ed for the winners of the WIIA Avco Cup and the European champions. Hatskin suggested it was quite possible some early season games between American based teams in the WHA could be played in Europe in the near future. This idea sounds very reasonable as in most American cities it is very difficult to generate much hockey interest early in the campaign when baseball and football is foremost on the minds of sports fans. There seems to be something about international hockey that brings out the best in every player par- ticipating. Could be the pride in representing one's country, Less penalties The recent directive by NHL president Clarence Campbell and his referee-in-chief Scotty Morrison to cut down on the number of minor penalties called seems to be a direct reversal of regulations instigated about a year ago. The announcement said fans in the United States won't pay to see "namby pamby" hockey. It also said at least 12 NHL clubs were losing millions of dollars in their operations, If the policy of forgetting to call penalties for tripping, elbowing, etc. is adopted it will in our opinion spoil the game. If a player knows he won't get a penalty there will be a lot of deliberate tripping and that should set off tempers and fights which the league has apparently been trying to eliminate. Legion dart league reaches halfway mark points and the Outlaws, Robins and Itchy Niters are tied for sixth deadlocked with 46 points apiece. 55 points while the Doublers, DR's and Flying Highs are schedule the Sassenachs lead the Exeter Legion mixed dart league ' by nine points over three clubs tied for second place. We're not disputing Hawley's greatness as a thoroughbred race horse jockey. It takes a lot of nerve and know how to win 400 races in one year and more than 3,000 by the time a jockey is 27 years of age. One thing in Hawley's favour is the fact he gets the best of horses to ride. We don't know who was second in the balloting for the award but Daryl Sittler of the Toronto Maple Leafs should have been very close. In the latter stages of the 1975-76 NHL season Sittler set one record which could stand for many years and equalled another. His six goals and four assists for a total of 10 points in the Leafs 11-4 victory over the Boston Bruins in early February will long be remembered, In the playoffs Sittler also scored five goals in one game to tie the mark previously held by Maurice "The Rocket" Richard. The Maple Leaf captain continued his fine play in the Canada Cup series with the winning goal in one game against the Czechs and is currently in the top ten scorers in the NHL. Gift suggestions This being our last column before Christmas we would like to make a few suggestions to that fellow with the long white beard and the red suit before he makes his deliveries Friday night. A good Christmas present for campaign fund com- mittees in Exeter, Lucan, Kirkton and Crediton would be enough donations to allow full payment of their projects. To Fred Mommersteeg and Rocky Weise a healthy Ex- eter Hawks junior hockey team to allow them to carry on and bring a provincial championship back. The same for Don Urbshott, Pete Loveless and Bill Bourne with the Lucan-Ilderton Jets enough victories to win the OHA Continental senior crown. To the many competitors at the Exeter Bowling Lanes and we are one of them a few extra strikes and the ability to convert those pesky corner pins. At the Exeter curling club may Santa Claus include a few eight enders. Santa doesn't appear to need much help in providing ideal weather and snow conditins for the many outdoor winter activities but some could come in handy in the New Year, For the euchre players at the Exeter lawn bowling clubhouse the right cards for a few lone hands. To the coaches at South Huron District High School, Santa could include a six foot three forward for the basket- ball teams; a speedy back and sturdy linemen for the foot- ball clubs, endurance runners for the cross country teams and a few fleet feet for the track team. At the Exeter claybird gun club site Santa could send 20-20 vision to a few more shooters to give Bill McNutt some more competition. To the many young hockey players without a hockey home this year a new arena at least for the 1977-78 season. To the large number of area harness racing owners and enthusiasts a pacer or trotter capable of breaking the two minute mile. In conclusion we would like to wish everyone a VERY MERRY, HAPPY AND BLESSED CHRISTMAS SEASON, I Resounding scores were chalked up in two of ,the three Exeter and district Rec hockey league games played this week.
