GRANTON
Granton volunteer fire brigade
were called to extinguish a fire
which had stated in one of the
corn bins on the farm of Paul
Toohey on Highway 23 Biddulph
township, Wednesday afternoon,
They were able to keep the
flames from spreading to the
other buildings. The Firemen's
Association would like to offer
their appreciation to all those
persons who assisted in providing
coffee and sandwiches at the
supper hour,
Women's Institute News
The Granton W. I, met at the
home of Mrs. Austin Hobbs
Monday evening December 13.
Mrs. Elsie Dann presided and
opened the meeting with the
Institute, Lord's Prayer,and the
Mary Stewart Collect,
Mrs. Donald Roloson gave a
report for the sunshine com-
mittee consisting of herself and
Mrs. C, McRobert. A number of
shut-ins and those in hospital
were remembered. Mrs. C. Lewis
reported on the 4-H Club the
"Quacky Cookers" luncheon
where she and Mrs. Elsie Dann
were invited guests,
Mrs. Percy Hodgins program
convener gave readings on the
topic Public Relations and in-
troduced the guest speaker, Mrs,
Fred Parkinson of Kirkton, who
gave a very interesting account
of the Kirkton W. I. visit to New-
foundland last June, this was
illustrated with excellent slides
taken by the speaker.
They travelled by bus.stopping
at points of interest along the
way, all arrangement for ac-
commodation en route was
arranged by Pete McNaughton of
Charterways who was the bus
driver. About 35 members took
the tour, their destination was to
be Port Union N.F, where they
were to meet members of the
W.I. that Kirkton had entertained
while they were on a visit to
Ontario a few years ago. It was a
happy reunion, and the New-
foundland ladies returned the
hospitality with a delicious
dinner featuring all N.F. foods.
Mrs. Parkinson terminated her
program with some beautiful
local winter scenes, and a pic-
ture of Christmas in her home. A
tasty dessert lunch was served by
the hostess and conveners Mrs,
P. Hodgins and Mrs. C, Lewis,
U.C.W. general meeting
Members of all units of the
U.C.W. and their guests, Wesley
U.C.W. representatives of the
Catholic Women's League, the
Anglican Church Women, leaders
of the youth groups and the
mothers of the C,G.I,T.
Explorers enjoyed a Christmas
Party.
Following a sumptuo4s hot
turkey dinner prepared by the
social committee, Mrs. Robert
Hardie presided over a short
business meeting and Mrs.
Robert McAlorum delegate to
Alma College Leadership School
at St. Thomas gave an interesting
report
The program for the Christmas
meeting was in charge of unit 1
who presented a Nativity play,
directed by Mrs. Robert Hardie,
those taking part were the
following: Mary-Mrs. Doug
Brown, Joseph-Bob Hardie,
Angel Gabriel-Mrs. E. Summers,
the Innkeeper-Mrs. C. B.
Westman who also was one of the
Magi, Shepherds-Mrs. Austin
Hobbs, Miss M. McNaughton and

meeting with the Benidiction
Church news
At the United Church Rev,
Elwood Morden was in charge of
the Christmas service Sunday.
The text for his sermon was taken
from. Luke 2-15, "Let us go even
unto Bethlehem to see this thing
which has come to pass". The
sermon was entitled "What
Christmas is all about" as
Christmas comes again let us
follow the Shepherds to Bethlehem
to discover a new the unob-
trusiveness of God, when he sent
His son Jesus as a babe born in a
stable, let us take care that He is
not outside our circle this
Christmas, Christmas without
Christ is like a coronation without
a King, let us think a little more
of our neighbors and less of
ourselves said Rev. Morden.
The ceremony of lighting the
fourth and fifth candles for
Advent which denoted Peace and
Christmas was performed by
Mrs. Harold Mills and Mrs,
Robert Garrett. Special music
was provided by the two choirs
under the direction of organist
Mrs. Elwyn Bryan, selections
"Long Ago on Christmas Day" by
the Juniors and "There in the
Straw" by the Senior members.
At. St. Thomas Anglican
Church Rev. Mary Mills opened
the morning service, then turned
it over to the Sunday SChool
teachers and their pupils who
presented their Christmas
Pageant.
Those taking part were Joseph-
John Herbert, Mary-Betty Anne
Herbert, Angels-Sylvia Beatson,
Kayleen Warrington and
Charlene Acres, Wisemen-Kenny
Beatson and Susan Noon,
Shepherds-Jaremy Noon and
Paul Acres, Scripture Readers-
Mrs. Lois Herbert, Jim Hodgins,
Miss Mario Herbert, Miss Helen
Herbert and Richard Acres.
The ceremony of the lighting of
the fourth candle denoting Peace
' the Advent wreath was per-
ormed by Sylvia Beatson. Rev.
Mills closed the service with the
usual prayers, then invited
everyone to a smorgasbord
dinner in the Church Hall where a
time of fellowship was enjoyed
and a visit from Santa Claus.
Much credit goes to the School
teachers Mrs. Richard Acres and
Mrs. Don Beatson for their ef-
forts on behalf of the Sunday
School
Former Granton resident passes
Sympathy is extended to the
relatives of the late Mrs. Oswald
Webb a former resident of
Granton, who passed away in
Montreal Convalescent Hospital,
December 17, in her 97 year. The
late.Mrs. Webb was the former
Lucy Broad.
Personals
The Cubs enjoyed a Christmas
party at the Scout Hall Monday
evening each member could
bring along a friend,
Mrs. Clifford McRobert and
Mrs. Alice Bryan attended the
Christmas party at Extendicare
Nursing Home London and
visited with Mrs. Harry Nixon
and Mrs. Laura Love.
Mrs. Lesta Kew of St. Mary's
was a midday dinner guest of
Mrs. Alice Bryan on Thursday of
last week and called on Mrs.
Kenneth Hodgins and Mrs. Lois
Herbert in the afternoon.
Miss Ruth Mardlin has
returned to Plains Health Centre
Hospital Regina where she is a
nurse, after spending a couple of
weeks at home with her parents
and family.
Miss Rona Hickey of Toronto is
spending the holidays with Mr. &
Mrs. Kenneth Hodgins and
family.
