Third place was taken by the Ailsa Craig Rovers. Clowns and persons on floats tossed peanuts and candies to the children waving on the sidewalks. First lady for council Mrs. Owen Bice, housewife, marked a chapter in the history of the village of Ailsa Craig on December 6 as she successfully won a seat on Council and became the village's first lady Councillor. Placing third out of the five candidates running for the four seats on Council, she took the seat with a good margin of votes. Born in Lobo Township, Ida Bice (nee Walsh) moved to Ailsa Craig in 1945. In 1951 she married Owen Bice. They lived in London and then Sudbury before coming to Ailsa Craig two years ago. They have four children; Robert who is married and also a resident of Ailsa Craig, Doug, who is married and living in Strathroy, Dave and Debbie, When asked how she became interested in running for coun- cillor, Ida admitted that she had been approached by several persons and finally decided to accept the nomination. Her husband, Owen, is currently with Richard Bennett Developers of London, and through her husband has interest and background in the field of planning and housing develop- ment. "I hope to contribute to council in this way," she stated, "as well as help villagers with any problems." "Before the elections, a lady in town phoned me one day con- cerned about the population signs at the entrances to the village," Ida mentioned. "She said she would vote for me, if I promised to do something about the in- „,,curate signs.” All three signs announcing the town's population, give different figures. Other Councillors elected this year include Don. Shipway, Ken Jones and John Willms. Reeve Jack Whitmore was re-instated by acclamation.
