The retirement age for town
employees has been set at 60
following approval by Exeter
council of new fringe benefits,
Monday,
While the age of 60 has been
established for retirement, a
clause in the agreement says that
this may be extended on an an-
nual basis with the approval of
council, However, no extentions
will be allowed beyound the age
of 65.
Employees using their vehicles
will be paid a mileage rate of 20
cents per mile, although the
original suggestion was for a fee
of 25 cents,
Councillor Ted Wright said he
thought the 25 cent figure was too
high. "With thinking like this,
we'll never lick inflation", he
suggested.
Reeve Derry Boyle said he
fought against a county council
motion to pay 21 cents per mile,
while other members thought if
county people were receiving 21
NO DECISION
Although it's a long way from
being ready forice,an enquiry has
been received for the use of the
new South Huron Recreation
Centre for a hockey school next
summer.
The Huron Hockey School,
which presently uses the arena at
Huron Park, have advised local
officials they plan to extend their
program and require a second ice
surface.
If agreement is reached, the
rec centre could be used from
August 7 to 27 next year. The
program would be in operation
for eight hours a day for five days
each week.
Mayor Bruce Shaw said this
week at council's meeting that no
answer could be given to the
enquiry until the new year.
It is expected that deliberations
will take place shortly over the
method of operation for the new
rec centre and Mayor Shaw has
advised that Stephen and
Usborne officials will be invited
to take part in those
deliberations.

cents, that is the figure that
should be paid in Exeter,
However, a show of hands at
Monday's meeting approved the
figure as 20 cents.
The new fringe benefit package
also indicated that employees
would be covered with a $30,000
life insurance policy.
"That's a pretty big, hefty life
insurance policy," Wright noted.
Reeve Derry Boyle replied that
the matter was now under in-
vestigation by the town's in-
surance carrier and said it may
not be possible to get that much
insurance. He noted that the
police presently are covered by a
$20,000 policy.
One of the other changes in-
cludes sic* time. Employees will
be allowed one and a half days
per month and may accumulate
up to 100 days in sick time.
However, they can receive only
the maximum if they are actually
sick,
As a retirement gratuity,
employees will fall under a
schedule whereby the number of
sick days accumulated will be
divided by two and then
multiplied by their daily rate of
pay, It was noted as well that this
is for retirement only and em-
ployees leaving the town's em-
ploy will not b0 paid for sick days
accumulated.
BIG RISK
Farmers who use un-
pasteurized milk from their
herds are "taking a big risk"
according to Huron Medical
Officer of Health Dr. Frank Mills,
He made the comment in view
of the increase in Brucellosis
being reported in Huron and
throughout Ontario.
He said Brucellosis in milk
causes Undulant Fever, which is
a chronic relapsing fever.
Dr. Mills also had a warning for
area cooks as the festive season
approaches. He said that fowl
should be kept refrigerated at all
times and once dressing has been
put into the bird, it should be
immediately cooked or
refrigerated.

tentative agreement with the
TWO CRASHES
Damages were light in two
accidents investigated this week
by officers of the Exeter police
department,
Friday, vehicles driven by
Robert Sloat, Grand Bend and
Eugene Becker, Dashwood,
collided on the Royal Bank
parking lot. Constable Ron Fice
set damages at $225.
As the result of a collision
Saturday, local police officers
are looking for a green colored
vehicle with damage to the left
front.
The unkown vehicle was in-
volved in a crash on Main Street
near the bridge with a vehicle
driven by Raymond Snell, RR 1,
Hay. Constable George Robert-
son listed damages at $600.
Sunday, the police department
was called to the Les Pines Hotel
to investigate a disturbance, As a
result, two patrons were removed
and will be appearing in court at
a later date facing charges of
causing a disturbance.

Exeter Police Association
whereby the local officers will
receive an 11 percent pay hike for
next year. Improvements in
fringe benefits are on top of that.
However, the contract is
subject to approval of the Anti-
Inflation Board and Reeve Derry
Boyle said the administrator
could levy a fine against the town
for approving a contract above
the six percent guideline
established by the A.I.B. and he
could also order the town to pay
for the over-payments rather
than having the officers pay back
any amount found in excess of the
guidelines.
Boyle said the A.I.B. appeared
to be sticking very close to the
guidelines in approving contracts
for 1977 and he said county
council members had the feeling
that they would have to roll back
wage settlements to the six
percent increase. Boyle indicated
the six percent increase was
supposed to include added fringe
benefits as well.
Mayor Bruce Shaw said he was
rather disturbed over the
situation if in fact the town could
be held liable for fines or
penalties if the guidelines were
exceeded.
Boyle said the safest thing to do
would be to pay the six percent
increase to the police and if more
is approved by the A.I.B, this
could be paid later.
Shaw said the only argument
the town could have for ex-
ceeding the guidelines was the
fact they were coming out of a
two-year contract.
SHELVE DRAIN
Stephen council this week
notified Exeter that they have
shelved all plans for the Waterloo
St. drain.
"It's too costly for the benefits
to be gained," Clerk Eric Car-
scadden said in explaining
Stephen's position on the drain,
Ted Wright asked how long the
drain may be shelved and he was
told no time period had been
established.
Exeter and Stephen had
planned to cooperate on the
storm drain, but an en-
vironmental board hearing this
fall had altered the plans sub-
stantially and both councils
decided not to proceed with the
work at this time.
