In the first period Lyle Rosendale and Brian Tave counted for Tavistock while Matt , Muller replied for the Hawks on a !iik pass from Ken Pinder. The only goal of the second period was fired by Ken Pinder of the Hawks with assists going to John Van Gerwen and Phil Knight with another team-mate David Kinsman in the penalty box. At 13 seconds of the third period Lyle Rosendale put Tavistock ahead 3-2. At 16.06, David Kin- sman put the Hawks back on even terms with a successful shot on a play started by Matt Muller. • • • • • • • • • • Top scorers The Lucan-Ilderton Jets in second place in the Ontario Hockey Association Continental Senior standings have three players in the top 10 scorers in the popular hockey loop. Diminutive Jacques Cousineau and team-mate Rick Fifield are tied for sixth place with 20 points apiece. Cousineau has nine goals and 11 assists while Fifield has fired five successful shots and added 15 assists. Randy Roth also of the Jets is one of four players deadlocked for eighth position with 19 points apiece. Roth has scored eight goals and provided passes to team-mates for 11 goals. Several weeks ago, Cousineau who first came to Western Ontario from Smooth Rock Falls in Northern On- tario to play for the St. Marys Lincolns passed the 100 mark in career goals in the Senior Continental. Arena work slowed The recent wintry weather may be more than welcome for youngsters and those participating in skiing and other outdoor activities but it has really slowed construction at two area arena sites. The steel for the Lucan arena has been on the site now for about a week and some work has been carried on but the cold has certainly hampered advancement. In Exeter, the steel is expected momentarily, but again the weather is a factor. King McDonald who is in charge of the construction committee for the recreation complex tells us that cement cannot be poured if the temperature is below 43 degrees on the old Fahrenheit thermometer. Blue Jays organizing The Toronto Blue Jays are getting things organized for their first year in major league baseball under the capable direction of general manager Peter Bavasi. Bavasi who hopes to follow in the footsteps of his father who has been around big league ranks for a long time is gathering an experienced staff around him. Manager Roy Hartsfield has been very successful in the minors, especially at Ha waai and he has signed up three or four of the best players from that club to go with the per- sonnel picked up in the expansion draft. Bobby Doerr, a star second baseman with the Boston Red Sox for many years has been named batting coach and Bob Miller, a former National league pitcher will handle the hurlers while Don Leppert will work in the bullpen. Handling the baseline coaching duties will be Jackie Moore and Harry Warner. Moore was a catcher with the Toronto Maple Leafs of the old International league in 1967. In an effort to draw fan support through Ontario, the ;Blue Jays have set up quite an extensive radio broadcasting network to let the public know all about the team. At the moment 13 stations including CFPL London and CKKW Kitchener will be part of the network organized by CKFH Toronto and the Hewpex Sports Network, owned and operated by Foster Hewitt. The Blue Jays are bringing Don Cheek in from Burlington, Vermont to handle the play by play on radio. He was chosen over 49 other applications, only three of which came from Canada. Cheek was a fill-in announcer last year for the Montreal Expos and worked with Russ Taylor when regular Dave Van Horne was doing games on television. CKFH will carry all 162 games of the Blue Jays while CFPL London will air about 150 contests during the 1977 season. The Blue Jays will start spring training in Dunedin, Florida on February 24 and play their first exhibition game there March 10 against the Philadelphia Phillies. Of the 25 grapefruit league games, 14 are against National league teams with the Montreal Expos providing the opposition in four games. This should be the start of a good Canadian rivalry despite the fact the two teams play in different leagues. Good hockey entertainment Hockey fans in the area with a few hours to spare Sun- day afternoon, December 12 could do a lot worse than visit the Hensall arena. Starting at 2:30 p.m. the London and Goderich Old Timers will be in action. All proceeds from the game will go to the Hensall Minor Hockey Association. The London club has a goodly number of former professionals on the team headed by Jack McIntyre. Other well known members are Don Beattie, Julian Smith, Harold White and Gerry Mayberry. They will be joined for this game by Seaforth veteran Ken Doig. The Goderich lineup contains a goodly number of names which made up Goderich intermediate clubs of the past. These include fellows like Ted Williams, Bill Gallow, Jack Merriam, Bill Fritzley, Gord Walters and Ron Allin along with Bob Shrier of the Goderich Paper Leafs. Wrestling for youngsters A wrestling tournament for boys '11 to 15 years of age will attract some 150 competitors to the South Huron District High School on December 18. The competitions are part of the Junior Olympics Program which is sponsored nationally by the Royal Bank of Canada. Every youngster taking part will receive a certificate of participation and ribbons will be awarded to winners of first, second and third places, Junior Olympics are organized by people in the com- munity. Information on starting a Junior Olympics Program is available at any branch of the Royal Bank or through the Canadian Olympic Association offices in Ot- tawa, Boost YOUR HOME TOWN If's Good For You The Exeter Hawks regained second place in the Ontario Hockey Association Junior "D" Western division Sunday when they trounced the Lucan Irish by a score of 11-2. The season record for the Hawks now stands at 10 victories, four losses and two ties good for 22 points, The Mitchell Hawks are in first place with 24 points and the Tavistock Braves are third with 21 points, but they have one game in hand over the Hawks, In their only other league start this week, the Hawks dropped a 4- 3 decision to the Tavistock Braves Friday night on a goal in the last two minutes of play. The Exeter club was in Belmont last night, Wednesday; they travel to Mt. Brydges Saturday night and will be back at the Zurich arena Sunday night at 8 p.m, when Thamesford will supply the opposition. The Hawks scored four times in the first period against Lucan Car rally is difficult The final car rally of the season in Exeter and district was held Sunday and proved as difficult to complete as any of the other two held earlier. Of 17 vehicles starting the 58 mile course, six failed to find the first checkpoint while others were well past the allotted time when they reached the final destination at the Pineridge Chalet, near Hensall. The winning car was piloted by Rob Stewart with John Charrette acting as navigator and Kevin Wareing adding some assistance from the back seat. Finishing second was another par of teenagers. They were Dwayne and Lorrie Mathers and Valerie Finkbeiner. The best family performance was turned in by Bill and Janice Brock. The novice trophy was won by Don Young of Goderich. He made the finish line 99 minutes past the deadline in his first try at rallying. The most persistent driver was Dave Lemmond who returned to the starting point three times to get straightened out and start over again. Organizers announced at the conclusion of Sunday's rally that more will be planned in 1977 with the first going in the early spring. Sunday night to get a good start on the way to the win, The game was only a minute old when Gerald Weido put the Hawks on the scoreboard on a three-way combination with Dave Kinsman and Kim McKinnon. A pair of goals in a space of 35 seconds shot the Hawks into a 3-0 lead. Perry Pooley hit the mark on passes from Matt Muller and. Paul Pooley and Brian Taylor converted passes from Gerald Weido and Kim McKinnon. The fourth Exeter first period marker was fired by Brian Taylor on a pass from Gerald Weido when an Irish power play backfired. At 55 seconds of the second period Ken Pinder scored for the Hawks with the assist going to John Van Gerwen. The first Lucan score came 36 seconds later when Brad Taylor beat Laurie Skinner in the Exeter nets. Jerry Jongeneel provided the assist. In the second period, Paul Pooley fired two successful shots, both on passes from Matt Muller. The other middle frame Exeter goals came from Dave Kinsman and Skinner. Gerald Weido and Tom Hayter assisted on Kin- sman's score and Skinner received help from Matt Muller and Paul Pooley.
