Exeter PUC manager Hugh Davis said this week that Ontario Hydro have not informed the PUC of any plans for drastic cutbacks in the use of hydro. However, they are maintaining their previous request that people attempt to cut down on their use of power as much as possible during the peak period between 4:00 and 7:00 p.m. The local PUC ran an ad- vertisement a couple of weeks ago asking local residents to keep their Christmas decorations off until 7:00 p.m. and then turn them off again when they go to bed. Davis noted that the Exeter street decorations are operated by a switch and have not been put on until after 7:00 p.m. The street lights themselves "e operated on a timing device activated by light and during December usually come on around 5:30 p.m, There is no indication that this will be delayed. Ontario Hydro have advised, however, that if unusually high demands continue, rotating black- outs could be scheduled, These would be scheduled across. the province and would last for I durations of up to 15 minutes. Davis said there was also a possibility that "if worse comes to worse" power consumption could be reduced by eliminating every second bulb on the street light network. Meanwhile, he said people should be conscious of the problem and attempt to reduce their consumption during the peak period. "Most people could delay starting i g their dryers or dish- washers until after 7:00 p.m.," he noted. The shortage occurred last week due to a variety of cir- cumstances ranging from cold temperatures, low water levels and technical problems at Ontario Hydro's Nanticoke generating station, Hydro has cut all exports and cuts have been made to industrial customers with interruptible service. Elydro officials say they are optimistic the utility will be able to meet this month's peak requirements unless weather and water conditions further deteriorate or there is another unexpected problem on the g,,enerating system, Four 560,000, kilowatt geherating units are out of ser- vice atThe Nanticoke generating station on the north shore of Lake Erie, south of Hamilton. One is off line because of a rotor problem and three others have been shut down due to a brittle condition in hangers used to support their boilers. There is little likelihood repairs can be completed before Christmas. The hangers are made of cold rolled stainless steel and have Why not town tree? Councillor Lossy Fuller questioned this week why the Christmas tree lights in front of the local library were turned on before 7:00 p.m. in view of Ontario's hydro shortage. She suggested that if local residents were expected to keep their lights off until 7:00 p.m., then the town should practice similar restraints. Works superintendent Glenn Kells said he thought the tree lights were wired to come on the same time as the street lights. "Does that mean they're on all night?" Mrs. Fuller asked, Christmas lights are to be turned off 'at bedtime. Councillor Ted Wright said it may be costly to hire someone to turn the lights on and off if they did not come on with the street lights, Mrs. Fuller said it was not a matter of costs with which they should be concerned, but primarly the conservation of hydro. Mayor Bruce Shaw said he would investigate the situation, Renew pact with Society Exeter council will continue to employ the London Humane Society in an effort to control dogs in the community. "It's certainly worth it," Councillor Lossy Fuller said in reference to the deterrent that is provided by having the Society make weekly • patrols in Exeter. Her committee recommended that the service be continued. Annual fee for the service will be increased $160 for 1977, bringing the total bill to $1,760. In a letter from the Society this week, council learned that 38 patrols had been conducted up to the end of October and 12 dogs had been impounded. TheSociety indicated those were the only statistics they had to report, Connell had been trying for some time to get a report from the Society on their work in the community, become brittle due to longterm exposure to high temperatures required for unit operation. The supply problem is com- pounded by the fact that 1,000,000 kilowatts of electricity are locked in at Lennox generating station, near Bath, west of Kingston because of insufficient tran- JOHANNA DEKKER Johanna J.
