J. J. O'Toole, head of the agronomy department, said there could be a future for the crop in the area, based on the results of tests conducted in the first year, Traditionally kidney beans have been grown in Essex, Kent and Lambton counties. "Although the kidney bean is a hardier plant than the white bean, the growing season poses some problems," said Mr. 0' Toole . Growers have traditionally planted kidney beans between June 10 and 14. "We tried planting a week earlier and found that the productivity was double the results we received planting a week later," he said. When the beans were planted one week earlier, results showed a harvest of 3306 kilograms per hectare, compared with a har- vest of 1747 kilograms per hec- tare when planting began June 18. But the results would have to be confirmed by further testing before recommendations to growers would be made. The kidney bean could prove an attractive alternative to growing white beans. According to Mr. O'Toole, the same type of management and equipment are required; and kidney beans are less susceptible to disease. Currently, kidney beans are grown by contract from grain elevators, They are not handled by the Ontario Bean Producers' Marketing Board. Kidney beans can be a profitable crop — but they can be more of a risk to the grower because they require a longer growing season, and because the grower has no control over the price fluctuations from year to year.
