Tuesday night last week, Southcott denied he had pur- chased any land near the park but clarified the statement on Wednesday stating he had signed an offer to purchase about 175 acres of property a half mile north of the park for $283,340, The park is located on the east side of highway 21 south of the Lake Huron resort community, In retaliation, Mr. Southcdtt has charged that Riddell is trying to "shaft" the community by creating a controversy around the proposed recreation area. Ontario's natural resources minister Leo Bernier stated that Mr. Riddell owed Mr. Southcott an apology. On Thursday, MPP Lorne Twenty-three members of the Orpha Club met Tuesday evening at the home of Valerie Burke. President, Irene Kennedy opened with a reading on neigh- bours. The annual Christmas party, to be held at Gert Flear's December 7 was planned. Each member is to bring an item for the program and the work and toys the club has made will be on display and then sent to the Lambton County Children's Shelter at Sarnia. Elaine Moore read two poems, "Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow" and "Just for today", by Sybil Partridge. An women's lib reading was given by Aileen Ravelle. Louise Wilson closed this part of the program with a birthday message in the form of a prayer, Following this was a work session of stuffing toys for the Christmas shower. Lunch hostesses were Margaret Hedley and Shirley Pole Church happenings About 15 young people from the Henderson, minister without portfolio who represents the area, including Grand Bend, called a press conference to allow Mr. Southcott to tell reporters his side of the story. According to reports in the daily newspapers, after Mr. Southcott made his initial statement the conference degenerated into a shouting match between Southcott and Riddell with neither one backing down. Riddell said he wasn't taking back any of his earlier statements and was, in fact, thinking of taking the matter before the public accounts committee of the legislature for investigation . Calm at Bend It was considerably calmer at Grand Bend than it had been in Queen's Park or at the press conference. Reeve Bob Sharen said council would be appointing a steering committee to look into the recreation priorities and feasibilities both for the com- munity and for the Severn Park property. Nominees will come from the Lions, Lionettes, Chamber of Commerce, the Van Dongen subdivision which is near the park and from an other group interested in having a voice. Mr. & Mrs. Duncan McVittie, Robin and Lawrence Jr. at Southampton, and Mr. & Mrs, Landmark to disappear? A landmark at the lake in Grand Bend, the Lakeview Casino may disappear if an agreement can be reached between Grand Bend council and a London developer. Reeve Bob Sharen said Tuesday that council will be meeting with Paul Fraleigh of Richleigh Investments of London within two weeks to discuss a proposal, Exact details of the proposal are not known at this time. Richleigh Investments are waiting for a survey of the casino property, currently owned by Eric Mcllroy of Grand Bend, before the proposal will be drawn up, Reeve Sharen did say that the tentative plans call for a proposal to purchase the casino and develop a commercial complex as well as a number of town- houses at the lakefron t location. "We don't know how many townhouses the project will volve but we know they will tear down the casino if the agreement is reached and the property purchased from Mr. Mcllroy," Said Reeve Sharen. Pinery OPP For the third week in a row, the Pinery OPP report there were no collisions in their area. During the past week, officers laid 12 charges under the High. way Traffic Act, circulated by Vic Hayter asking that the park not be developed," said Mr, Sharen, "We'll have to look at the costs of any project and how the money would be raised and most im- portant, the operating costs and operating deficits if any." said Reeve Sharen. "This idea is to be 'no cost' to the community. If it is not going to be, then council wants to know about it in ad- vance, not after the fact." Mr. Sharen admitted that Mr, Southcott had called him to request a public meeting to ex- plain the situation but after consulting with the officials of both the Chamber and the Lions Club, it was decided not to hold such a meeting. "It would do more harm than good." said Mr. Sharen, who has, in the past, been at odds with Mr. Southcott over various situations in the community. Grand Bend Councillor Bob Simpson said he personally, and council as a group, were staying out of 'the controversy surrounding the park. "Dave Nelder of the Lions' came to our meeting early in November and asked for council support on the acquisition of land for recreational purposes." said Mr. Simpson. "Council backed him wholeheartedly!" In ensuing discussions on facilities, council cautioned Mr. Don McArthurand Kevin of Port Elgin. Thursday dinner guests with Mrs. Dorothy Truscott were Mr. & Mrs. Wellwood Gill, Mr. Doyle Newman, Mrs. Jean Patterson and son Donald Patterson, Nelder and the Lions Club that they would not be willing to take over any "white elephants in the form of recreational facilities", "As far as council is concerned to this point," said Mr, Simpson, "There has never been anything definite suggested for the Severn Park site. There have been a lot of suggestions that were being considered but nothing definite," While there have been literally thousand of words reporting the affair, theGrand Bend Lions Club are keeping a low profile too. Club president Don Finkbeiner told the T-A Tuesday that the club's objective, to serve the community, was basically un- changed despite all the con- troversy. Mr. Finkbeiner said the club desired to acquire land to provide additional recreation for the community and was pleased the village would take over the park but he declined to discuss the possible use of the park. He said he felt any statement should come from the club executive. The club will elect two or three members to a proposed steering committee to investigate possible uses for the park. These representatives of the Lions Club will then be available to work with municipal representatives and all others on making the best use of the park. "We're keeping a low profile and although the club's name has naturally been mentioned in the press reports of the controversy, we're not getting involved." said Mr. Finkbeiner. Wants meeting 'Don Southcott, the centre of the controversy and allegations made by Mr. Riddell, told the T-A Monday that he hopes there is a public meeting. It won't eliminate all the suspicions but I hope a public meeting is held. The stories are getting wilder and wilder," said Mr. Southcott. "Some of the organizations involved must be wondering if they were duped and I think a public meeting would give them a chance to ask questions. There have been some confused reports on the matter." Mr. Southcott said Minister Without Portfolio Lorne Hen- derson had indicated he was going to write to the parties involved to see if they still want Severn Park. Free Methodist Church from Goderich joined the Youth Group at Church of God Friday evening. During the social time they played Volley and dodge ball at the P.S. gymnasium.
