Hawks win one,
The Exeter Hawks were in
action on three occasions this
week in Ontario Hockey
Association Junior "D" league
play this week and came away
with an even split.
Thursday night in Port Stanley,
the Hawks and the Port Stanley
Lions battled to a 7-7 draw;
Saturday night in Seaforth,
Exeter club downed the Seaforth
Centennaires 5-2 and Sunday
night in Zurich, the Hawks were
on the short end of a 7-6 score to
the Tavistock Braves.
The Hawks will travel to
Tavistock Friday night for a
return engagement with the
Braves and will be at home at the
Zurich arena Sunday night to
meet the Lucan Irish, Game time
is 8 p.m.
A rash of penalties kept the
Hawks in continuous trouble in
Sunday's loss to Tavistock.
Captain Steve Jennison was a
frequent visitor to the penalty
box being called for minor
penalties on no less than 11 oc-
casions.
The Hawks battled back from a
6-1 deficit at the end of the second
period with five straight goals in
the third period only to lose on a
Tavistock score with only 42
seconds remaining in the game.
Lyle Rosendale scored two
goals and Keith McKay added
one successful shot to give
Tavistock a comfortable 3-0 lead
at the end of the first period.
The first Exeter goal came
from the stick of John Van
Gerwen on an unassisted effort at
the 30 second mark of the second
period with Tavistock playing a
man short.
In the remaining minutes of the
second session, Bill Rhode, Scott
Learning and Jim Currah
counted for Tavistock to up the
score to 6-1.
The Hawks came out flying in
the third period and scored twice
before two minutes had elapsed.
Defenceman Phil Knight
converted a pass from Paul
Brooks and Fred Mommersteeg
fired a successful shot on a three-
way combination with Ken
Pinder and Phil Knight.
Near the eight minute mark,
Brain Taylor blinked the light
behind the Tavistock net on a
pass from Steve Jennison and
Scores high
in Rec loop
Scores were high in two of the
three Exeter and district Rec
hockey league games played this
week.
Sunday night in Hensall, Pfaff
Electric swamped Les Pines 20-3
and Tuesday night MacLean-
PaSsmore downed Guess Who 9-3
while Algoma Tire and Les Pines
battled to a 4-4 tie.
Murray Parsons scored five
times to lead the MacLean-
Passmore attack while Larry
Skinner was right behind with
four successful shots.
Mark Hookey fird two goals
and Mike Higgins added a single
to take care of the Guess Who
scoring.
In the tie game, Bob McDonald
was best for Algoma Tire with a
two goal effort. Adding singles
were Bob Jones and Toni
McDonald.
Gary Sararas hit the mark with
two shots for Les Pines while the
single goals came from the sticks
of Pete Glover and Pete
Anderson.
The Exeter Rec hockey league
schedule for this week has Les
Pines and Algoma meeting
Sunday night at 7 p.m. at the
Hensall arena.
In Tuesday's twin bill, Pfaff
Electric and MacLean-Passmore
tangle at 8 p.m. and Algoma Tire
meet Guess Who at 9:30 p.m.

Gerwen scored his second goal of
the night on a play started by ,Ken
Pinder.
The Exeter club put on ad-
ditional pressure and were
rewarded with the tying goal at
15.17, Gerald Weido was on the
firing end with the assist going to
Brian Taylor.
Lyle Rosendale scored what
proved to be the winning goal for
Tavistock at 19.18,
The stars for Exeter receiving
the McKnight's Men's Wear
awards were Fred Mommersteeg
and Ken Pinder.
Get early start
In Seaforth Friday night, the
Hawks scored three times in the
first period on the way to their 5-2
victory. They completed their
scoring with two goals in the
middle frame. Seaforth counted
once in the second and third
stanzas.
The game was only a little
more than two minutes old when
the Hawks took advantage of a
power play opportunity and
Gerald Weido scored on a pass
from Brian Taylor.
At 7.47 with the teams at even
manpower Weido again hit the
mark. This time passes were
provided by Brian Taylor and
Rick Ingram,
Late in the first period, Ken
Pinder put the Hawks ahead 3-0
when he converted a pass from
John Van Gerwen.
The two Exeter scores in the
middle frame came on three-way
passing combinations. Kim
McKinnon hit with passing help
from Don McKellar and Paul
Pooley and Brian Taylor
registered with assists going to
Rick Ingram and Geral Weido.
Get tie in third
In Port Stanley, Thursday
night, the Hawks were forced to
come from behind with three
goals early in the third period.
Port Stanley held a com-
manding 4-1 lead at the end of 20
minutes of play. The only Exeter
marker was shot-by Ken Pinder
on a pass from John Van Gerwen
on a power play at 9.55.
The Hawks were able to narrow
the deficit to two goals by the end
of the second period.
Brian Taylor, Rick Ingram and
Perry Pooley were the Exeter
marksmen. Assists went to Phil
Knight, Rick Ingram, Brian
Taylor, Matt Muller and Ron
Bilcke.
Ken Pinder fired two suc-
cessful shots early in the third
period to tie the score tem-
porarily. Assisting were Phil
Knight and Fred Mommersteeg.

The Exeter atom "A" club
gained an even break in two
Shamrock minor league games
this week and scored a win in ex-
hibition play.
Friday in Strathroy, the atom
club suffered their only defeat by
a score of 4-2 to Strathroy. Satur-
day they scored a 4-1 exhibition
win over Clinton and Sunday it
was Exeter 3-0 over Dorchester.
The first Exeter goal in the
loss to Strathroy was fired by
Scott Lovie on a pass from Doug
Scott and the second successful
shot came from the stick of
Steve Laithwaite with Lovie and
Scott providing the assists.
Exeter scoring in the 4-1 win
over Clinton was well spread
with four different goal scorers.
Captain Brent Dawson opened
the Exeter scoring with an un-
assisted effort. Scott Lovie
followed on a three-way com-
bination with Doug Scott and
Steve Laithwaite. Darren
Vandergunst was next on the
scoring line by converting a pass
from George Pratt and Steve
Laithwaite hit on a solo dash.
After a scoreless first period,
the Exeter youngsters scored
two goals in the second period
and one in the final to defeat
Dorchester 3-0.
Darren Vandergunst was the
first to blink the. red light on
passes from Geotte Pratt and
Brent Dawson and Mike
Tiedeman followed on passes
from Doug Scott and Scott Lovie.
The final goal was fired by
Darren Vandergunst with the
assist going to George Pratt.
Pee Wees Victorious
A strong performance in the
first period allowed the Exeter
pee wees to carry on and defeat
Dorchester 5-3 in Shamrock
minor league play, Sunday.
The Exeter youngsters after
giving up the first goal of the
game rebounded quickly and took
a 4-1 margin on the scoreboard by
the end of the first period.
At 1:36 of the first frame, Mike
Clark completed a three-way
passing effort with Bill Glover
and Mark Vandergunst to put
Exeter in a scoring mood,
Less than four minutes later,
Tom Coates converted a pass
from Bill Glover and Glover
came back with an unassisted
goal at 6;28.
The fourth Exeter marker in
the first period came from the
stick of Scott Batten with assists
provided by Mike Murray and
Steve Riddell.
Dorchester came on with two
goals in the second and early in
third but Bill Glover fired an
insurance goal for the winners on
a pass from Mark Vandergunst.
Atom I l's Lose
The Exeter atom II club suf-
fered an 8-0 defeat at the hands of
Belmont in Shamrock minor
league play Saturday in Belmont.
Bill Gilfillan is manager of the
Exeter atom club and Ron Bogart
is the coach.
GOALS GALORE
The Exeter midgets went on a
real scoring spree in Shamrock
minor league play Friday with a
lopsided 15-1 victory over Huron
Park.
The Exeter club started slowly
with three goals in the first period
and then picked up steam with
seven goals in the middle frame
and a half dozen more in the final
session,
Dave Bogart, Perry Pooley and
Tony Mattucci were the first
period Exeter marksmen, Brad
Taylor picked up two assists and
Paul Van Gerwen and Dennis
Preszcator each assisted on one
Showing a diversified attack
the seven different Exeter
players accounted for the second
period goal getting, Firing the
successful shots were Dennis
Preszcator, Perry Pooley, Tony
Mattucci, Brian Mercer, Dave
Bogart, Paul Van Gerwen and
Randy Fisher.
In the third period, Tony
Mattucci chalked up two goals to
run his game total to four and
single scores were added by
Randy Parsons, Brad Taylor and
Darryl Preszcator.
The lone Huron Park goal came
from the stick of Dave Smith on
passes from Mark Cronyn and
Tim Smith,
Dart lead now
at dozen points
The Sassenachs now lead the
Exeter Legion mixed dart league
with 48 points, an even dozen
more points than the runnerups.
Tied for second spot with 36
points apiece are the Flying
Highs, DR's and Doublers. Next
in line with 33 points apiece are
the Winkers and the Itchy Niters.
With 32 points each are the Last
Chance, Outlaws and Robins.
This week Harvey Hillman
fired a 140 to tie Eric Heywood for
the men's top score.
This Friday is lunch night and
the Outlaws and Scotties are in
charge. Friday's schedule is as
