All Electors are hereby requested to govern themselves accordingly. NOV, 27, 1976 AtWANCE POLL —MUNICIPAL OFFICE 406 Main St, E. Carscadden D.R.O. Mrs, Elizabeth Bell, Poll Clerk "To live on a farm!" had always been the childhood dream of Kitchener born Tom and Carol Miller. That dream was realized early this year when they decided to settle down permanently on the property they purchased in 1971 on highway 83, about two miles west of Russeldale, Initially, they had bought the farm as a kind of summer retreat when Tom was playing professionally in the National Hockey League. He had played his junior hockey with the Kit- chener Rangers before going to Denver University on a hockey scholarship. After graduating as a civil engineer, he decided to try ;for a career in the world of sport when he was drafted by the New York Rangers in 1970. The next year he was traded to Detroit Red Wings and it was then that he saw the fulfillment of yet another boyhood dream, that of playing on the same squad as his idol, Gordie Howe. It was the latter's last year with the Detroit team. Later, the young Miller, went to Buffalo, and he also did duty with the New York Islanders during their first year in the League. By the time the 1974 training camp rolled around, Miller felt his career was just about to take off and hopes were running high when he sustained two injuries, a broken hand and a serious leg injury. By the end of that year, he decided to pack up his hockey gear, move to the farm with his wife and two small girls and look for another job. Unfortunately, there didn't seem to be much call for civil engineers in the area, and his farmer friends discouraged him from trying to make a living off the farm which had only 55 acres of tillable land. For a time, he tried working for a construction firm in Stratford but last winter's heavy storms found him stuck in snowbanks more than he cares to remember. It was then he decided there. "had to be another way" and ventured to turn part of the barn into a work shop where he commenced to turn out children's toys and other small items in pine like clock shelves, planters, jewellery boxes and coat racks. "I had always enjoyed working with wood", he states. Carol, also a creative person, took the inititive to make even more use of space in the barn by setting up a country-style gift shop to sell not only her husband's products and her own hand sewn wares, but also the handwork of about a dozen neigh- borhood farm ladies. Quilts, stuffed toys, all kinds of knitted and crocheted goods, as well as maple syrup, homemade jam, pickles, bread and candy are just a few of the interesting things to be found on the shelves of her quaint and unique store called "The Country Craftsman," The Millers are determined to Stephen gets drain funds Stephen township council has received word from the Province of Ontario that they will be receiving an additional $50,000 in funds this year to be used for tile drain loans. Clerk Wilmer Wein said the additional money will "help us to catch up." To the many ap- plications which could not be completed. This brings Stephen's total for 1976 for farm drain loans to $341,500. The tender for the supply of culvert pipe for a bridge at Lot 11, Concession 16-17, north of Shipka from Armco Drainage at $5,760 was accepted. It was the lowest of three bids received. Two drain petitions were received and they will be for- warded to engineers for a survey, plan and report. The first petition came from Mike Glavin and Stan Hicks at Lot 1, Concession 3 and Lot 6, Concession S.B. C.P.Corbett will be the engineer. Gamsby and Mannerow of Guelph will be the engineering firm for proposed drainage at the east part of lots 4 and 5, Con- cession 14. The petition was presented by Bill McCann, Jim Laye, Hubert Carey and Ervin Ra tz. Permission was given to John Pritchard of the Crediton Garage to sell used cars. keep a simple, country at- mosphere. You'll also see daintily hand smocked children dresses, or beautifully embroidered runners, And, of course, there's the lovely one of a kind articles from Tom's own wood workshop, The Millers have another dream: a time when they'll have trails through the 45 acres of bush. for horseback riding; when they'll have a picnic area where folks from the city can come and spend a whole day on the farm in the beautiful peace and quiet, that Tom and Carol and family appreciate so much, Enjoy country atmosphere Pro hockey player turns craftsman GIGANTIC AUCTION SALE "Something for Everyone", plus Suitable Additions, Antiques, Appliances, Household Articles Sat.
