406 Main St,
E. Carscadden D.R.O. Mrs, Elizabeth Bell, Poll Clerk
"To live on a farm!" had
always been the childhood dream
of Kitchener born Tom and Carol
Miller. That dream was realized
early this year when they decided
to settle down permanently on the
property they purchased in 1971
on highway 83, about two miles
west of Russeldale,
Initially, they had bought the
farm as a kind of summer retreat
when Tom was playing
professionally in the National
Hockey League. He had played
his junior hockey with the Kit-
chener Rangers before going to
Denver University on a hockey
scholarship. After graduating as
a civil engineer, he decided to try
;for a career in the world of sport
when he was drafted by the New
York Rangers in 1970.
The next year he was traded to
Detroit Red Wings and it was
then that he saw the fulfillment
of yet another boyhood dream,
that of playing on the same squad
as his idol, Gordie Howe. It was
the latter's last year with the
Detroit team.
Later, the young Miller, went to
Buffalo, and he also did duty with
the New York Islanders during
their first year in the League.
By the time the 1974 training
camp rolled around, Miller felt
his career was just about to take
off and hopes were running high
when he sustained two injuries, a
broken hand and a serious leg
injury. By the end of that year, he
decided to pack up his hockey
gear, move to the farm with his
wife and two small girls and look
for another job.
Unfortunately, there didn't
seem to be much call for civil
engineers in the area, and his
farmer friends discouraged him
from trying to make a living off
the farm which had only 55 acres
of tillable land.
For a time, he tried working for
a construction firm in Stratford
but last winter's heavy storms
found him stuck in snowbanks
more than he cares to remember.
It was then he decided there. "had
to be another way" and ventured
to turn part of the barn into a
work shop where he commenced
to turn out children's toys and
other small items in pine like
clock shelves, planters, jewellery
boxes and coat racks. "I had
always enjoyed working with
wood", he states.
Carol, also a creative person,
took the inititive to make even
more use of space in the barn by
setting up a country-style gift
shop to sell not only her
husband's products and her own
hand sewn wares, but also the
handwork of about a dozen neigh-
borhood farm ladies. Quilts,
stuffed toys, all kinds of knitted
and crocheted goods, as well as
maple syrup,homemade jam,
pickles, bread and candy are just
a few of the interesting things to be
found on the shelves of her quaint
and unique store called "The
Country Craftsman,"
The Millers are determined to
