Hunter safety centres
A recent news release from the Ontario Ministry of
Natural Resources office reveals that hunter safety ex-
amination centres will be continued.
Beginning in January, 1977 all hunter safety examina-
tion centres will be held at the Hullett Wildlife Management
Area maintenance building.
There will be a centre on the third Tuesday of each
month. However, if a large number of applications are
received, additional centres will be scheduled at the same
location.
Applicants are reminded to send in their applications to
the Wingham office at least two weeks prior to the ex-
amination date in order that they may be processed in time.
Anyone wishing to obtain a hunting licence for the first
time must participate in the examinations.
More on continental
It is very interesting to receive the statistical sheet
each week on activities in the Ontario Hockey Association
Continental Senior hockey league.
Nick Martin, the statistician out of Stratford does a
tremendous job in keeping the media and the participating
clubs well informed on what's going on.
This week's sheet reveals that the record of the Lucan-
Ilderton Jets club of 1972-73 in winning 14 straight games
has never been seriously threatened.
Jacques Cousineau of the Jets has passed the 100 goal
mark. The veteran forward from Smooth Rock Falls is only
the seventh player in Continental league history to reach
the 100 plateau.
One of the top goal tenders in the Continental loop for
the past five years has announced his retirement. He is
Brian Caley of the Durham Huskies. Caley has alternated
most of that time with another well known goalie Gord
Becker.
Roughriders will win
After a perfect record of being wrong in our predictions
of the weekend Canadian Football League eastern and
western finals all we will say this week is the Roughriders
will win the Grey Cup.
Two things are certain, one of the Roughrider teams
will win the Grey Cup and the largest crowd ever will be in
attendance at the newly enlarged CNE Stadium in Toronto.
The 1977 Grey Cup game is slated for the Olympic
Stadium in Montreal and attendance.records will be certain
with a crowd in excess of 70,000.
Controversial subject
While on the subject of CFL football, we had a chance
to read all three Toronto papers over the weekend on the
subject of the Argos and the firing of coach Russ Jackson.
In the Sun, writer Jim Hunt said he was sorry to see
Jackson go despite the fact he was one of the leading critics
of coach.
Hunt went on to say, "When he was hired I saw no
reason why Jackson couldn't succeed as coach of the Argos,
the most impossible job in Canadian football, perhaps in the
entire world of fun and games."
In the same paper, Pat Hickey said, "Jackson was
shafted." Hickey explains, "The Argos reneged on a
promise when they dumped Jackson with three years to run
on a five year contract. He didn't get the five years he and
owner Bill Hodgson agreed were needed to build the Argos
into a winning football team. Shamefully, he didn't even get
two years. He was robbed of a full season by a spoiled
superstar, one Anthony Davis."
In the Globe and Mail, Christie Blatchford dug back for
comments by four persons when Jackson was hired two
years ago.
The then new Argo owner Bill Hodgson said, "The new
coach will be given a multi-year contract, so we will sink or
swim with him. And I promise you that if we don't succeed
with the present management, I will sell the club."
Presumably the Argos are for sale.
Leo Cahill then with Memphis of the World football loop
and now a prime candidate to succeed Jackson, "I'm sur-
prised Russ took it. He said he wanted to retire and I
thought he would go out on top. This could backfire on him."
Russ Jackson himself, "I'm not coming into this with a
negative attitude. The Argos have given me security. I'm
looking at it as a possible 10 year job, or a career,"
Dick Shatto, then Argo publicist and now general
manager, "We're looking for someone with past experience
in the CFL." Shatto is still looking.
In the Toronto Star, veteran writer Milt Dunnell said,
"No person ever gave the job more class than Jackson.
That isn't enough if he can't coach. Whether he deserved to
be fired can be debated until somebody gets slugged off his
bar stool. Whether any coach deserves it is debatable. It
just happens to be a way of the jungle."
Dunnell's last comment was, "You can't blame it all on
Anthony Davis."
Despite all the furor over Jackson's dismissal, one
thing is sure. He will receive more money for not coaching
for the next three years than the fellow who takes over and
actually does the masterminding.
His salary is believed to be about $75,000 per annum
plus fringe benefits. In this case the fringe benefits may be
the fact he won't be coaching but will show up on pay day.

The Exeter Hawks won two of
the three Ontario Hockey
Association Junior "D" hockey
games played this week.
Wednesday in Ilderton, the
Hawks doubled the score 6-3 over
the Lucan Irish; Saturday night
they suffered a 6-3 defeat in Mt.
Brydges and Sunday night in
Zurich they outscored the same
Mt. Brydges club 10-6.
The Hawks travel to Port
Stanley tonight, Thursday to
meet the Port Stanley Lions;
Friday they go to Seaforth to
meet the Centenniares and Sun-
day night they will be back on
home ice at the Zurich arena to
meet the Tavistock Braves.
Game time is 8: p.m.
In Sunday's victory over Mt.
Brydges, the Hawks scored two
goals in the first four minutes of
play and were never headed
although the visitors stayed close
for the first period. The Exeter
club decided the issue with three
unanswered goals in the final
period.
The first Hawk marker came
on a power play at 2.46 of the
opening period when Rick
Ingram hit on a three-way effort
with Brian Taylor and Steve Jen-
nison.
Only a minute later, Paul
Pooley made it 2-0 converting a
pass from Matt Muller. Before
the period was over, Brian
Taylor and Gerald Weido tallied
for the Hawks. Assists were
credited to Gerald Weido, Paul
Brooks and Rick Ingram.
In the middle frame, Brian
Taylor and Paul Pooley scored
on unassisted efforts and Ken
Pinder counted with passing help
from John Van Gerwen and Jim
Ferguson.
Paul Pooley completed a hat
trick with a successful shot at
3.10 of the third period on a play
started by Jim Ferguson. In the
later stages, Gerald Weido
scored from Rick Ingram and
Noel Skinner and Steve Jennison
scored on a solo effort.
Late in the third period in Mt.
Brydges Saturday night, Hawks
coach Glen "Rocky" Weise
received a game and match
penalty for chasing the referees
across the ice.
Manager Fred Mommersteeg
will take over the coaching
duties while Weise serves a
suspension. The length of time
the coach will be out of action
is not known at the moment. It
could be for at least four games.
The Hawks took the lead quick-
ly Saturday night as Perry
Pooley scored on a power play in
the first minute. Gary Toth of
Mt, Brydges was penalized after
only nine seconds of play. Phil
Knight assisted on Pooley's
successful shot.
The other Exeter marker
came in with only four minutes
left in the third period.
In a reversal from their usual
early season pattern, the Hawks
took the lead over Lucan
Wednesday and were never head-
ed. It was a four goal outburst in
the last half of the second period
which actually made the
difference.
The Exeter club led 1-0 at the
end of the first period and 2-1 un-
til the 15.37 mark of the middle
frame when they started to pull
away.
The only goal of the first 20
minutes of play came at 17,10
when Fred Mommersteeg blink-
ed the light behind the Lucan net
on a three-way combination with
Ken Pinder and John Van
Gerwen.
At 14.24 of the second session
the Hawks took a 2-0 lead when
Brian Taylor scored on an un-
assisted effort.
Only 20 seconds later the Irish
hit the scoreboard for the first
time as Ken Murray clicked with..
assists going to Brad Taylor and
Don Latta.
The Hawks quickly opened up
