The Exeter Hawks picked up
an important two points in
Ontario Hockey Association
Junior "D" play Sunday night,
The Hawks scored a 4-2 victory
over the Mitchell Hawks in a
game played at the Huron Park
arena. It was the second game of
the year between the two teams
Play in Hensall, Sunday
Hawks win over Mitchell
Hawks have four victories, one
tie and one defeat,
Exeter manager Fred Mom-
mersteeg was pleased with
Sunday's victory saying,"It was
big game for us, We were able to
take two points from Mitchell.We
now have two games in hand."
This week, the Hawks-travel to
Thamesford for a Friday night
contest and will be playing host to
the Belmont Bombers Sunday
night. The game will be played at
the Hensall arena at 8 p.m.
The Exeter victory Sunday
came in a well played, exciting
contest with the outcome in doubt
until the final Whistle. The fourth
and insurance Exeter marker
came with the Mitchell net empty
in favour of a sixth forward and
only two seconds left on the clock.
Paul Pooley chalked up the
first Exeter goal at 3:10 of the
first period when he converted a
pass from Matt Muller, Mit-
chell's captain Bob Skinner
evened the score with a suc-
cessful shot at 13:40,
The local Hawks were able to
take a one goal edge to the
dressing room at the end of the
first 20 minutes of play as Gerald
Weido culminated a three-way
combination with Rick Ingram
and Phil Knight. •
Mitchell was quick to bounce
back in the second period with the
tying.goal coming from the stick
of Tom Pickard at 2:54,
At 6:27 of the middle frame
defenceman Phil Knight put his
" Exeter Hawks club in front to
stay with a successful shot. The
scoring play was started by
Gerald Weido and Rick Ingram.
Phil Knight was also the
marksman on the final Exeter
score which went into the
empty Mitchell net vacated by
' Dave Holmes on a last ditch
effort to tie the score.
Phil Knight and Brian Taylor
were the two stars for the Exeter
Hawks selected for the McKnight
Men's Wear awards.

five games Sunday at HP

Mitchell continues to hold down
first place with 11 points on five
wins, two losses and a tie in eight
starts. The Exeter club is second
with nine points, but have played
two fewer games than their
Mitchell counterparts. The local

London, the bantam club dropped
its first game of the seasonty a
score of 6 - 3 to Strathroy but they
bounced back Sunday at the
Huron Park arena to score a
convincing 5 - 0 victory over
Lucan.
Jeff Fuller took care of the
most of the Exeter scoring in
Exeter's 5 - 0 romp over Lucan.
Fuller scored four of his team's
five markers.
Wayne Parsons assisted on two
of Fuller's successful shots and
single assists went to Doug
Fletcher, Rick Lindenfield,
David L. Bell and Kevin Parsons.
Doug Hoffman was in goal for
Exeter and recorded the first
shutout of the season.
In London, Friday, Strathroy
led 3 - 2 at the end of the first
period, the second session was
scoreless and Strathroy out-
scored the locals three goals to
one in the final period of play.
Atoms tie
At Huron Park Sunday af-
ternoon, the Exeter 'A' atoms
and Belmont played to a 4 - 4
draw.
Two third period goals by the
Exeter boys allowed them to get
back on even terms and settle for
.a,
Belmont led 3 - 2 at the end of
the first period and notched' the
only score of the second frame.
Steve Gould fired the first
Exeter marker on a pass from
Brett Batten and Steve Laith-
waite let go the second successful
shot on an unassisted effort.
Doug Scott was on the com-
pleting end of a three-way
combination with Darren Van-,,
dergunst and Jeff Pfaff to put
the Exeter club within one goal
of Belmont early in the third
period and Steve Laithwaite
produced the winning goal with
the assist going to Brent Dawson.
The Exeter atoms played a 2-2
tie with Huron East at the Carling
arena in London, Friday night.
The Exeter youngsters jumped
into a 2-0 lead by the midway
mark of the second period but the
home club was able to come back
and square the score.
Steve Gould was the first
Exeter marksman on a pass from
Scott Lovie and Jeff Pfaff fired a
successful shot with the assist
going to Doug Scott.
In an exhibition game at Huron
Park, Sunday, the Lucan atoms
ran roughshod over the Exeter
"B" team by a score of 9-1.
The only Exeter goal was the
first of the game and came on a
shot by .Gary MacDonald on a
three-way combination with
Dennis Pym and Allan Pym.
Captain Jeff Shipley led the
Lucan scoring attack with a five
goal performance. Jess Crawford
fired two successful shots and
Brent Bannerman and Lester
Arts added singles.
Pee wees on spree
,The Exeter pee wees went on a
real scoring spree Sunday af-
ternoon as they clobbered Lucan
by a score of 17-1 .
The game was only 55 seconds
old when Tom Coates converted a
pass from Mark Vandergunst and
and the locals were away and
flying. By the end of the first
period the score was 9, - 0.
First period scoring was well
distributed with eight players
sharing in the total. Mark Van-
dergunst was the only pee wee to.
get more than one goal with two
successful shots.
Scoring in single fashion in
addition to Tom Coates were
Scott Pincombe, Steve Prout,
Dave Shaw, Mike Murray, John
Kernick and Bill Glover.
Mike Clark fired two goals for
Exeter in the middle stanza and
John Kernick and Scott Pin-
combe added one score apiece.
Steve. Riddell found his way, on
the scoreboard in the third period
with two goals while Dave Shaw
and Mike Murray each blinked
the red light on one occasion.
Mark Vandergunst was the top
playmaker for Exeter with five
assists to his credit,
The only Lucan goal came from
the stick of Al Craig on a pass
from Rob Black.
In action scheduled for this
week, the Exeter novice plays
host to Belmont Friday night at
the Huron Park arena at 7 p.m.
and five games are slated for the
same 'arena Sunday 'afternoon
and evening. .
The first of the five games
starts at 5 p.m. and involves the
two atom teams, both pee wee
clubs and "A" bantam squad.
