The Huron-Perth Conference
senior football championship will
be played Saturday afternoon at
the South Huron District High
School and the South Huron
Panthers will be one of the teams
competing.,
The Panthers came up with a
strong second half performance
Tuesday afternoon to blank
Stratford Northwestern 14-0 to
qualify for the final round.
They will meet the Goderich
Vikings who swept past Norwell
of Palmerston by a score of 31-0
in Tuesday's other semi-final
contest. Game time Saturday is 2
p.m.
Both defences played very well
in the first half, The Panthers had
a lot of trouble hanging onto the
ball due mainly to the very
slippery and treacherous field
conditions.
Five South Huron fumbles in
the first half kept them in their
own half of the field for the first
30 minutes but the defensive unit
was able to contain Stratford and
the game was scoreless at
halftime.
The complexion of the game
changed quickly in the second
half, In fact, it changed on the
very first play. Gord Baird of the
Panthers took the Stratford
kickoff and was able to return it a
total of 63 yards to give his club
the needed momentum.
Quarterback John VanGerwen
gained 20 yards and a Nor-
thwestern penalty gave the
Panthers possession on their
opposition seven yard line.
On the play Gord Baird got
close to the goal line but lost
control of the slippery ball.
Sassenachs

On the next series, John Van
Gerwen on a fake play into the
line completed a pass to Phil
Knight which went for 33 yards
and a touchdown. Steve Knight
was good on the convert and the
score was 7-0.
The Panthers continued to
control the play for the balance of
the third period, Early in the
fourth quarter, John Van Gerwen
punted into the Stratford end
zone. The receiver tried to return
the kick but it went short. The
ball was touched by a Stratford
player and fumbled,
Gord Baird was johnny-on-the-
spot to recover for the second

Sports
Spotlight
By Ross Haugh
Amateur sport organizers in Canada seem to be
enthusiastic about the new Ministry for Fitness and
Amateur Sport.
The new Minister Mrs. Iona Campagnolo says she will
be addressing the confused national attitude of Canadians
themselves towards sport and fitnesi,
Mrs. Campagnolo has already made up her mind about
the level of fitness of the average Canadian. She said
recently, "The one single thing I would like to achieve is get
Canadians off their backsides."
She continued, "I don't think that 10 percent of the peo-
ple in Canada give a damn about their bodies. About 85 per-
cent of our leisure time is spent in front of television sets.
Canadians seem to be really reluctant to do anything that
involves exercise. I'd like to do something to change that."
While on the subject of physical fitness, there are a cou-
ple of excellent books on jogging available.
One book on jogging is available through the Ontario
Recreation Society at 559 Jarvis street, Toronto and all
Bata shoe stores.
This booklet will help one learn the technique of jogging
and plan a jogging program for your needs. Jogging can be
done bydamilies, boys, girls, men and women of all ages.
It is an easy, inexpensive and effective way to get into
good shape. Despite its apparent simplicity there are good
and bad ways to jog.
The other book on jogging has been prepared for
elementary and secondary school students and teachers to
promote ther Olympic ideal through the educational media.
It is called the Olympic Jog Book and can be secured
from the CAHPER National office at 333 River Road,
Vanier, Ontario. The price is $3.
Good racing weekend
This weekend was very successful for several area
harness horses and their drivers.
At Meadowlands in New Jersey, Meddlesome owned
jointly by Bill Ellerington of Exeter and driver Greg Wright
paced to a new lifetime record of one minute, 57 and four-
fifth seconds.
Congratulations to Murray Hodgson of Lucan. His four
year old pacer Little Arnie won a $9,000 invitational pace at
Windsor Raceway Friday night.
Little Arnie also set a personal mark of only four-fifths
of a second in besting some top pacers including Derby Dan
and Super Baron.
Little Arnie is a Tarport Arnie gelding and is trained
and driven by Larry Decaluwe.
Saturday was a big day for a young Exeter driver. Rob
Lindenfield scored his first career victory piloting Pultusk
owned by his father Arn.
Congratulations to Brad Scott of Exeter who par-
ticipated recently in rodeo championships at Picov Downs
atAjax.
Brad who has been in tfie.~.ittle Itititcrig event' at' the
Exeter rodeo for the last couple of years took part in
similar events at Ajax.
Dalt Finkbeiner, one of the most enthusiastic sup-
porters and workers of the Exeter rodeo over the past two
decades has just returned from a one week stay in San
Francisco.
Better known as Fink, he attended the world convention
of the Arabian Horse Association and also took in one of the
largest rodeo and horse shows in the world.
At the cow palace in the California city, the rodeo is
combined with a horse show and livestock expedition.
He said the interest in these types of shows in Califor-
nia is tremendous with large crowds in attendance. "It
seems to be their way of life with youngsters only five and
six years old wearing cowboy boots and hats.
Figure skaters starting
Gaylan Josephson, president of the Exeter figure
skating club reports that activities of his group are starting
this week. Opening lessons begin this afternoon, Thursday
at the Huron Park arena and pre-schoolers and badge
groups take over at the Hensall arena Monday afternoon at
4:30 p.m..
Some hockey facts
The New York Rangers have crazy numbers for several
of their players, Goalie John Davidson wears 00, Phil
Esposito has 77 on his back and Ken Hodge's sweater
number is 88. Esposito wears 77 because he couldn't get his
usual 7 away from Rod Gilbert.
The recent Canada Cup hockey series made a profit of
about 2.2 million dollars. Of this,l.1 million dollars goes to
the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association and the other
half will be split between the penision funds of the NHL and
WHA on a 29-2 basis representing the number of players
each league had on the original Team Canada roster.
Former NHL goalie great,Jacques Plante is now work-
ing for a Montreal catering firm, His primary concern is
the concession stands at the new Olympic Stadium.
Hal Loycoe, the first coach of the Vancouver Canucks
when that club made the NHL through expansion has gone
to Holland to coach.
Terry Crisp who played his junior hockey in St. Marys
is apparently headed for a coaching career.
Crisp who helped the Philadelphia Flyers to two
Stanley Cups has been sent to the Springfield Indians to
serve as coach while John Hanna recuperates from acci-
dent injuries.
Change in homes
The Exeter Hawks will be playing their next home
game at the Hensall arena.
It will be Sunday night at 8 p.m. with the Belmont
Bombers supplying the opposition.
The switch to Hensall is for one game only. The balance
of the Hawks games will be played at the Zurich arena.
Continental scats
According to the latest Continental league statistics
released by Nick Martin of Stratford, several members of
the Jets are zeroing in on several scoring plateaus.
Jacques Cousineau had 99 assists and only five away
from the 200 point mark since he joined the Jets. Cousineau
had a good scoring weekend and is probably over both of
these marks by this time. Doug Galloway has picked up 96
points to date.
Defencernan Barry Baynham is the fourth Continental
competitor to hit the 175 mark in cal-eer minor penalties.
