TAHITI OF THE ATLANTIC
Once again this winter, many local residents will be
heading for the ever popular vacation island of Barbados. To
get an update on the area, the writer. recently spent some
time in Barbados, St. Vincent and Grenada.
Barbados is the perennial holiday island with visitors
from Europe mingling with Canadians and to a lesser degree
residents of the U.S.A.
Barbados has a selection of hotels suitable to all tastes
arid pocket books. Canadian can watch for a selection of holi-
day packages this coming winter, for real bargains, con-
sider November or even early January,
Many people visiting Barbados do not realize how close
they are to St. Vincent. Known as the Tahiti of the Atlantic.
Twenty five minutes by 48 seat prop jet brings you to
enchanting St. Vincent. The first thing you will notice is the
friendly smiling faces and beyond them the lush tropical
hills. Incidentally, these hills rise gradually to the peak of
Soufriere 4000 feet above the Caribbean.
My hotel was Young's Island, a delightful island hotel
based on a Tahitian village With full facilities including
showers so designed that you feel you are showering in the
open when in fact your privacy is complete amid the foliage.
A lovely beach, tennis courts, a fine restaurant plus enter-
tainment and a delightful pool make this a superb spot.
Other lovely hotels include Ra-Wa-Cou, a cottage colony
overlooking two black sand beaches on the windward Atlan-
tic side, Grand View speaks for itself as does Blue Lagoon.
'Vvonette Beach ApartMents is owned and operated by a
friendly Canadian.
A nine hole golf course is .,surrounded by magnificent
Scenery at "The Aquaduct". Accommodations are unique
and spacious, it is possible to sit on your verandah and fish
from a cool mountain stream while watching the play along
the fairways. Watch for this resort to expand, including a
further nine holes. The Club House serves delicious local
curries and has a swimming pool.
St. Vincent also offers The Botanic Gardens reputed to
be the oldest in the Western Hemisphere. Fort Charlotte 600
feet over the capital of Kingstown has the history of the
island, in paintings on the walls. The interior of St, Vincent
offers the IvIarrianna and Mesopotamia Valleys, intensely
cultivated with bananas, nutmeg, cocoa, coconut and bread-
fruit, it must be said however, that St. Vincent is the water
lovers paradise with every water Sport available, and for the
yachtsman, this northernmost island, of the Windwards is
the ideal point to sail through the magnificent Grenadines to
Grenada, but more about this next week.

By MRS. HAMILTON HODGINS
Many Whalen friends and

the department of summer
schools and extension at the
University of Western Ontario
regaled those attending as she
spoke on the topic of "Com-
municating with people."
Such communication, ac-
cording to Miss Armitt, is best
conducted through humor. "If we
can laugh together, so much
tension would go out of life," she
said.
Miss Armitt told the gathering
that there was humor all around
if they would listen for it. "The
only way to enjoy true humor,"
she said, "is to listen to what"s
going on around you,"
During the banquet the
Children's Aid Society honored a
number of its long term foster
parents and volunteers. Special
certificates recognizing 15 years
as foster parents went to Grant
and Jean Williams of
Mississauga. Certificates
recognizing 10 years service were
presented to Herman and Jennie
Van Wieren of Hensall; Howard
and Ann James of Egmondville;

a meeting between the Com-
mittee of Management for
Huronview and A,C. Thornhill
and Dr. F. Vernon of the
Ministry of Community and
Social Services regarding possi-
ble solutions to a shortage of ac-
commodation were placed
before the regular meeting of
Huron County Council Friday,
Council was urged to look for
other facilities, such s the
purchasing of service in other in-
stitutions in the County, to solicit
Huron County Council agreed
last Friday to pay 5Q per cent of
the costs involved to replace the
Master clock control and
amplifer at the Court House•The
other half will be paid by the
Town of Goderich.
The county has contributed
half the maintenance costs on
the clocks since they were in-
stalled on the building. Total cost
of the repair and replacement
work will be $2900.
In other business council
accepted the recommendation of
the property committee to
purchase an ABSO Blue Prints
Limited Trition One Copier at a
price of $1,1135. The machine had
been requested by the planning
department,
At present the planning depart-
ment is having blueprint copies
made by B. M. Ross and
Associates at Goderich or Mer-
cury Blueprinting in London,
which requires considerable
more aid from the Ministry of
Health to provide more chronic
beds in Huron, the possible con-
struction of senior citizens apart-
ment units in co-operation with
the Ministry of Housing, the
possible use of satellite . homes
and the possibility that in future
the Ministry of Social Service
may have funds available to
build residential homes but not
to extend care facilities.
At present, Huronview is full
to_capacity with a waiting list of
between 30 and 40 persons,
Council was also told that the
staff time in having the work
done,
The planning department felt'
that the equipment could be used "
extensively in copying maps in
connection with SecondaryPlans
for municipalities.
It is estimated that the Plan-
ning Department would produce
approximately 10,000 square feet
of prints and the Highways
Department 1,000 square teet per
year as a minimum, At present
costs they said the machine
would pay for itelf in three to
five years.
Fire and Safety Advisor from the
Ministry of Community and
Social Services visited Huron-
view recently and made a
number of recommendations
which are now being carried out.
The safety advisor
recommended the pressurized
water and Cot extinguishers be
recharged, combination nozzles
be purchased to replace the
straight stream nozzles on the
fire hoses in the 1960 additions,
that a thermal protector be in-
stalled in the janitors rooms on
the first floormen's section, that
a five pound ABC multi-purpose
dry chemical extinguisher be in-
stalled in the paint storage area
and that five additional annun-
ciator panels be installed in
various locations.
As the annunciator panels will
he an expensive project, the Ad-
ministrator has been authorized
to obain estimates for the work,
In other repairs it was an-
nounced that S. J. Ten Pas

sideratian is being given to
existing agreements between
municipalities with regard to
housing now occupied or being
built, and whether occupancy of
units should be based on the
needs point system and be con-
sidered on a County-wide basis,
Also discussed was whether at
some future time the seven and
one half per cent of any deficit
which is presently being paid by
local municipalities should
become a County responsibility.
Mr. Flett agreed to bring tip those
points for consideration at the
next meeting of the Board of
Directors of the Authority.
The County Executive Com-
mittee agreed that the Board of
Directors of the Authority, or Mr.
Flett if not the entire board,

should be invited to attend a
meeting again later on, perhaps
in the spring when the functions
and responsibilities of the
Authority will be better
established.
The Executive Committee has
been considering the possibility
of the County establishing a non-
profit housing authority for and '
operated by the County. The
matter was deferred for the
present time however.
The Huron County Housing
Authority is under the
jurisdiction of the London Branch
where J. D. Cook is Branch
Manager. The Goderich and
Clinton Housing Authorities have
been dissolved and the new
Authority is now responsible for
the whole of Huron County.

Ken Flett, Huron County's
appointed member to the new
Huron County Housing Authority
met recently with members of
Council's Executive Committee
and reported that still only four
members have been appointed to
the board of directors. These
were Harold Knisley of Goderich,
Chairman, Jack Delbridge,
Frank Sill and Mr. Flett.
There are three members yet
to be appointed by the Federal
Government, J. H, Lyndon is the
manager of the Authority.

including admission of tenants to

arrangements and the proposed
