Drinking

concern
to police
Exeter Police chief Ted Day
this week warns older youths who
are able to purchase liquor not to
supply liquor to minors.
Day commented, "If you are
apprehended and it can be proven
that liquor was supplied to
minors you will be charged ac-
cordingly."
The chief's comments were
made following several incidents
over the weekend.
He continued, "On several
occasions young girls and boys
very much under the legal
drinking age were picked up by
our officers and their parents
were notified to come to the
station and take them home."
Eight charges were laid under
the Liquor Act on Friday and
Saturday,

Thanksgiving Day
Exeter council decided Mon-
day night to have the ministry of
housing prepare a "housing
policy statement" for the
municipality.
Ministry representative
Virginia Parker told council
there would be no cost to them
for the study, which is designed
to give the community a clear
picture of the supply and demand
for various types of housing.
She said this information could
act as a guideline to developers
in determining what type of
housing may be best suited for
the community at a particular
time.
"It can provide a target for
housing needs," she explained,
adding that there were ministry
programs available that could
assist undertaking projects to
meet those targets.
These include assistance for
housing for lower income
families, community sponsored
housing programs and lower in-
terest rates for developers who
undertake to fill a specific need
in the community.
"There's nothing to lose in
having it done," Mayor Bruce
Shaw suggested and council
members agreed as they passed
the required motion.
At the suggestion of Ms.
Parker they also agreed to have
an update on the senior citizen
housing need survey. This survey
was completed before the erec-
tion of the Helen. Jermyn
apartments were undertaken and
it was suggested it was now time
for an update.
Also attending Monday's
meeting was another ministry of
housing representative Diana
Doerr. She is currently working
on Exeter's official plan and told
council that it needed "beefing
up" considerably in some parts.
The planning firm of Damas &
Smith had been involved in the
work, but council terminated
their services last week.
