He lives in a pretty tough neighbourhood where mugging is quite frequent, and, in spite of what the media claim, it is on the increase. Some of the friends that he works with have told him to carry a hunting knife for protection, and this he is now do- ing. However I have told him that this is against the law. We have had a few arguments over this so I wonder if you can tell me, if I am right, or if it is considered legal these days, when it's carried for protection. While it is not illegal to carry a hunting knife for a peaceful reason, it is illegal to carry one for protection, because your sole purpose would be to use it as a weapon for a dangerous pur- pose, and not merely as a tool. Therefore it is inadvisable for anyone to arm themself with a knife. In your particular case we think it would be much better to ad- vise your son to move to another port of the city or suburbs, because in spite of what you may think, statistics definitely show Toronto to be one of the safest large cities in which to reside in North America.
