Town offices
to be paid
The final payment for the
renovation to Exeter's municipal
offices was authorized by council,
Monday.
Solicitors Wayne & Petree sent
a letter on behalf of M & R
Construction asking 'for the
payment of the $2,000 hold-back
and also the interest on that
amount.
In addition, the letter asked
council to consider paying an
additional $3,000 above the
contract price because the con-
tractor had actually expended
that much money above his bid
price in doing the renovations at
the former post office.
Council decided to pay only the
$2,000 hold-back with no interest.
Building inspector - Doug
Triebner advised that the
building had never had its final
inspection and said there Were
still enough infractions on the job
for council to hold back payment
for another year.

PUC manager Hugh Davis
appeared before council at their
meeting Monday in an effort to
convince members that they
should reconsider their action
regarding the layoff of RAP
employees.
He suggested the responsibility
for the move rested with council.
Davis, who said he was ap-
pearing as a private citizen, said
the employees being laid off had
no control over the financial
situation and yet they were the
ones feeling the brunt of the
problem.
He said the employees were
valuable and noted that if he had
an opening he would hire Jim
Guenther "in a minute" in view
of his experience in having
Guenther on staff after the March
ice storm.
"When you want good em-
ployees, they may be gone," he
warned.
Davis suggested the sale of the
old arena could bring in enough
funds to keep the employees
working.
While saying he was not critical
of RAP's handling of their
financial situation, Davis noticed
they had a very simple budget
and should have figured out their
fixed costs (such as wages) at the
start of the year so they would
have known exactly what funds
they had left to spend on other
items.
Reeve Derry Boyle asked
Davis what he would do if the
PUC ran out of money.
"We'd come to council for a
loan," the PUC manager replied.
Constable Ron Fice in-
vestigated and listed damages at
$4,600.
Thursday, Carl Ortman, R.R.
3, Exeter reported to Exeter
police that his 1973 pickup truck
had been stolen from a Main
Street north parking lot.
This vehicle has not yet been
recovered and police ask thin,
public to keep an eye out for this
1973 turquoise and white pickup
truck with licence number C53-
049.
When Boyle replied that
council didn't have money to bail
RAP out of their predicament,
Davis again mentioned the sale of
the arena as a possible source of
income for RAP.
Mayor Bruce Shaw explained
that council had spent many
agonizing moments over the
matter and had repeatedly told
RAP throughout the year there
would be no extension of funds.
"Your words are heard," he
told Davis, but added there was
no way council could help.
Could save
on insurance
A management firm has ad-
vised Exeter council they could
save $70 per month by having
another firm provide insurance
protection for employees.
Stevenson & Hunt recently
asked prices from several in-
surance companies on the supply
of identical benefits now provided
by Mutual Life.
They advised that Northern
Life had quoted a price of $70 per
month less than the present cost,
Clerk Eric Carscadden ' noted
that the saving was only "on
paper" at this point, explaining
that the town usually received an
,annual rebate from Mutual.
However, council decided to
have Northern Life officials
outline their services at the next
meeting.
