Fire caused $3,000 damage to the kitchen area and $7,000 smoke damage to contents in the home of Carl Stuckless at 110 St, Lawrence Avenue, Huron Park. Centralia fire chief Jesse Reed said great efforts by at least three persons were instrumental in holding the fire to one area of the house and rescuing four young people. Bob Stuckless arriving at his home shortly after the fire siren sounded was able to get his brother Mark and a friend Shawn Wells to safety from an upstairs bedroom where they were sleeping. At the same time, Tim Griffith was able to get two children of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Laramie out of the adjoining duplex, Hal Walsh was out jogging when he noticed the fire, He called the fire department and then secured a garden hose to slow the blaze down until firemen arrived, Fire chief Reed commented, "Hal was certainly responsible for keeping the fire contained to the one room until we arrived and the boys acted quickly and bravely in removing the children." Goderich trustee Dorothy Wallace failed to get a proposed motion before the board at Monday afternoons meeting of the Huron County Board of education which would have allowed school principals to hire non teaching staff such as secretaries and custodians on their own. In fact when the matter of bringing the motion forward for discussion was voted upon only Mrs. Wallace supported the suggestion, Mrs. Wallace, in explaining the proposed motion, explained that she felt it "insulting" to the principals to have to bring the name of a proposed new em- ployee such as secretary or custodian before one of the trustees before officially hiring. At present this method of hiring is board policy and so it will remain. Huron County Director of Education John Cochrane told the Board at its meeting on Monday afternoon that the in- terim report on a feasibility study on possible adoption of a for- malized system of performance review for board employees has been delayed. The Education Committee of the Board had recommended in the spring that work begin on such a study and the Director of Education was asked to present an interim report at the October 1976 meeting of the Board. Mr. Cochrane, in a brief report submitted to the meeting, told the Board that he had spent a good He continued, "I certainly want to thank everyone for their outstanding efforts in containing what could have been a very serious incident." "Our firemen also responded quickly. One man was at the hall in four minutes from the time the call was received," added Reed, The fire chief said cause of the blaze which broke out in the kitchen at 12:20 a.m. Sunday has not been determined. The Stuckless family are now residing in another home in Huron Park provided by Ontario Development Corporation until their home is repaired. portion of the summer gathering and reading material pertaining to various types of performance review systems. The reading task, he explained, had not yet been completed. His report noted that progress on preparation of the formal presentation on the subject ground to a halt in September with his involvement in salary negotiations and preparation of material for the fact finder ap- pointed by the Education Relations Commission. Based on the amount of material to be weighed, and the time required to obtain employee input and reaction, he explained, it is estimated that at least six months will elapse before a formal report could be ready for the Board's consideration. Smiles A young lad was doing his homework while his father was watching television. "Dad, there are three basic rules of hygiene to keep you from losing your teeth. Two of them are to brush your teeth twice a day and see your dentist twice a year. But I can't remember the third. Can you?" "Yes," replied the father. "Don't ask your Dad questions when he's watching a football game." Doctor: I'll examine you for a twenty dollar bill. Patient: Great. If you find it, we'll split it!"
