Thursday night the Exeter
Royals culminated a long season
by winning the Southwestern
fastball league championship.
In six hard fought games the
Royals came on top four games
to two over a tough squad from
Lieury.
The Royals who ousted the
Lucan Irish in the deciding game
in Lieury by a convincing 8-2
score.
Lieury opened the scoring in
the bottom of the first inning as
Lloyd Mathers singled and came
in to score as Steve Hemming
slammed a long home run to left
field.
Barry Baynham of the Royals
had been thrown out in the top of
the first trying to stretch a triple
into a home run.
There was no scoring in the se-
cond, but in the top of the third
the Royals rallied to score five
big runs.
Ron Mason ,led off the inning
with a long triple to left field.
Brian Hodgins hit a long fly ball
to score Mason.
With one out Barry Baynham
and Bill Farquhar singled. Far-
quhar's single to centre eluded
the centre fielder's grasp and he
was able to score to make the
score 3-2.
Jack Glover was then hit by a
pitch and Doug Pearson singled
to move Glover to third. Pear-
son stole second and both scored
as Terry Bourne's grounder was
thrown wild of first.
The score remained 5-2 until
the top of the sixth when Jim
Pfaff singled and scored as
Barry Baynham's bunt was mis-
played.
The Royals added their final
two runs in the top of the
seventh. Jack Glover opened the
seventh with a long home run to
left field.
Scott Burton then reached on
an error and came in to score as
Jim Pfaff laced a single to centre
field.
Glenn Thompson went the dis-
tance for Lieury and took the
loss. He allowed seven hits while
striking out three batters.
Brian Hodgins toiled for the
Royals and did not allow a hit
after the first inning. He ended

The South Huron intermediate hockey league which is
growing in popularity each year appears to be in for its best
season in history,
League president John Ansley reports that it appears as
if nine teams will be entered this year giving fans of all
clubs participating an excellent variety in hockey action,
Hensall, who was a charter member of the league a few
years ago will be back again after a short absence and they
will be joined by new clubs from Goderich and Watford.
Returning from last year are the defending champion
North Middlesex Merchants from Parkhill, Zurich Flyers,
Shipka Colonials, Huron Park Marauders, Centralia College
and Arkona.
President Ansley this year is emphasizing team
management saying, "the league will be only as good as
management of the clubs involved. I think we have an ex-
cellent calibre of men heading all of our teams this year."
A lot of credit for the success of the league belongs to
Ansley who has built up a good image and this is certainly
shown in the eagerness of the new teams to participate.
A great help, too. has been the fine work of statistician
Bob Somerville of Huron Park who prepares a weekly
report on all activities.
First local hockey
The first chance for local hockey fans to get a look at
the 1976-77 edition of the Exeter Hawks comes up Friday
night when the first exhibition game is played.
The Hawks will be taking on the Lucan Irish in a pre-
season contest at the Huron Park arena at 8:30 p.m.
Hawks manager Fred Mommersteeg is confident his
team will be very successful this year in providing area
fans with a top notch brand of hockey.
The first home game of the regular season for the
Hawks will be Friday night, October 15 when the Tavistock
Braves will supply the opposition. This first game will be
played at the Huron Park arena.
The rest of the home games for the Hawks will be
played at the Zurich arena.
Royals win
Locally the 1976 baseball season is over and we would
like to pass on congratulations to the Exeter Royals in win-
ning the Southwestern Fastball Association championship
Thursday night. The Royals provided local fastball fans
with excellent entertainment throughout the season and
they didn't get the response in support for home games that
the calibre of ball warranted.
The local fastballers proved that a home field is not
necessary to win ball games. The Royals chalked up all
three victories over the Lucan Irish in the semi-final series
on the Lucan diamond and at least two of the four victories
against Lieury came in away from home games.
In the final game, playing coach Brian Hodgins of the
Royals turned in an excellent pitching performance after
giving up Lieury's only two runs in the first two innings.
From then on Hodgins with good fielding backing from his
mates was invincible.
Bird is rewarded
The Detroit Tiger sensational rookie Mark "The Bird"
Fidrych who set the big league baseball scene ablaze with
his appearance has been rewarded by Tiger management.
Bengal general manager Jim Campbell announced
Saturday that Fidrych had been signed to a three year con-
tract becoming the second man in Tiger history to receive
such an offer. The other is Rusty Staub.
Fidrych also received a bonus for his performance this
year when he came out of the minors to win 19 games.
While winning 19 games was important Fidrych's new and
refreshing approach to the game created interest
throughout North America.
During his final appearance Saturday in Milwaukee,
Fidrych found a stone in his shoe while on the mound and he
promptly sat down on the job and removed the pebble while
the crowd cheered.
One of the most encouraging performances for the
Detroit team in the late stages of this season was turned in
Friday night by John Hiller.
Hiller who has been the Tiger premier relief pitcher for
the past four years made his first start during that time and
he was superb in shutting out the Brewers on five hits.
We heard Hiller on a pre-game show Friday and he said
starting wasn't much different than relief. He commented,
"I will certainly be expected to go a longer time as I am
usually a short relief man and it will be different to start
my pitching assignment without any men on base. Should
not have any pressure to start."
A real celebration
All but the shouting is over as far as divisional cham-
pionships are concerned in major league baseball but we
would guess the present day clubs don't celebrate in the
same fashion some of the former stars did.
Back in 1928, the then powerful New York Yankees
clinched the American league pennant in Detroit with only
a couple of days remaining in the regular schedule.
Babe Ruth, who was in his heyday at that time wanted
to have a celebration in the Detroit hotel they were staying
in so he called room service for a piano.
He was told the hotel didn't have a spare piano so The
Babe went out and bought one to provide the music for his
celebration.
Preparing figure skating season
Despite some problems in securing ice time, the Exeter
figure skating club will be in action in early November.
Club prtsident Gaylan Josephson reports that the club
will be at, the Hensall arena each Monday night and at the
Huron Park arena each Thursday evening throughout the
winter months.
Brad Loosley who has been the club professional for the
past six years will be returning. Registration for prospec-
tive figure skaters will be held on Saturday, October 16.
