Say thanks
for facilities
At the suggestion of Councillor
Ted Wright, Exeter council
agreed Monday afternoon to
write the Huron board of educa-
tion to extend their thanks for
the use of the school facilities for
,theExeter
Fair board secretary Garnet
Hicks said he had done likewise.
Fair officials indicated the
move tq the school facilities
created few hardships, and in
fact may have been a boon in
some regards.
The lighting was found to be
better to show off the exhibits
and the amateur contest was
made more enjoyable because it
did not have to compete with so
many distractions on Friday
night.
In addition, there was seating
for everyone in attendance at the
Friday night show and it at-
tracted one of the larger crowds
in rece,it years.
The novelty of the change of
venue may also have attracted
some patrons it has been
suggested.

The PUC plan to purchase a
portion of land from Bev Morgan
& Sons on which a pumping
station will be erected. The 173'
by 200' parcel of land will be
bought for $2,000. Under terms of
the sale, the PUC will be required
to provide water to one of two
locations designated by the
property owner if he wishes the
service.
In addition, if the well is
abandoned, the property owner
will have the option to purchase
the land from the PUC at the
same figure as the sale price.
In other business on Tuesday,
the PUC:
— Learned from Davis that the
materials required to provide
services to the South. Huron
Recreation Centre have been
ordered. He said it would cost the
PUC between $5,000 and 56,000 to
undertake the work.
— Approved extending the
discount date on utility bills for
the post office department to the
27th day of the month in which it
is billed. The date for most other
customers is the 20th. However,
the post office department noted
it was difficult to meet the earlier
date due to the payment system
used by the department.
— Were advised that customers
would be asked to fill out a
questionnaire with their next
bills. It deals with the use of air
conditioning and electric heating
in local homes, Members said
they hoped customers would
provide the information as
required.
— Re-testing of 311 meters will
be undertaken this year as part of
the annual program required by
the federal government. Mayor
Bruce Shaw said he hoped his
was one of the meters to be
tested, because his high hydro
bills indicated the meter was not
working properly. Davis replied
that, contrary to popular belief,
most meters actually slow down
with age rather than speed up.

take pot luck
The Exeter Legion Ladies
Auxiliary held their first regular
meeting of the year on Monday
night and has been the custom
over the years it was preceded
with a pot luck supper.
During the business session
plans were made to run two
bingos, the profits from each to
be given to the new Recreational
Centre. The conveners for the
Auxiliary's 25th anniversary
dinner and dance reported that
all was going well and that word
had been received that the first
Auxiliary president, Mrs. Vernon
Heywood would be coming from
B.C. to this special occasion.
Sports Officer, Barb Hearn
announced there are several
bowling tournaments coming up.
Wingham on October 6; Kin-
cardine on October 27. First vice-
president, Esther Hillman, gave
a report on the convention which
was held in Windsor last week. A
donation of $25.00 was made to
the Salvation Army.
President Noel Westlake then
introduced the guest speaker, Bill
Powell from Westminster
Hospital, London, who brought
greetings from all the vets,
He told of the loneliness of
these men and women some of
whom have been in the hospital
since 1920 and of how the parcels
that are sent down from our
Branch every month gave them
such pleasure.
He said the average age of the
600 permanent residents is 59
years and that the oldest is 99
years. He read some articles
from the Hospital newspaper that
some of the vets had written
about their trip to the Exeter
Rodeo and told us that he is
always looking for trips to take
them on, just to get them away
from their everyday existence.
He said most times they are all
sleeping by the time they get
home from these outings but they
are so much happier because of
them.
Mr Powell has been busy
travelling around to the different
branches keeping the Legions
informed on the wants and needs
of these worthy men and women
who find themselves bound
together with one thing in
common-they are all vets.
President Westlake thanked
the guest speaker. The mystery
gift was won by Gladys Bierling.
After the meeting was closed a
few games of bingo were enjoyed,
