Lucan Public School on Wednesday, October 27 at 4:10 A very happy and historic occasion took place in Denfield Baptist Church on Tuesday September 21. The Baptist Women's Missionary Society of Denfield celebrated one hundred years of mission and witness. The Dorcas Mission Circle as it is known today held its first meeting in 1876 with Mrs. (Rev.) E, W. Dadson as president with seven charter members. The afternoon session took the form of interest groups with representatives from B.W.M,S, Circles in Middlesex and Lamb- ton counties. Mrs. T. Morikawa led the discussion on Missions, Mrs, E. Madden, Prayer and Mrs. R. Wilson on Family Relationships. Before supper the guests had an opportunity to renew acquaintances, buy Christian reading material supplied by the Canadian Bible Society or look over the historic displays. The guests enjoyed a bountiful supper after which Mrs. Edna Rosser, our oldest member cut the Centennial cake, made and decorated by another talented member Mrs. E. Holland. Many friends and guests joined in for the evening service lead by the president Mrs. Verda McDowell, Mrs. G. Carless lead a song service of old and favorite hymns. Mrs. B. McKinley of Zurich played the mariniba, a very unusual instrument with a beautiful sound. Mrs. Carless also sang a solo accompanied by Mrs. D. Milligan on the organ. Mrs. (Rev,) O. H. Maude a former minister's wife gave a tholightful, devotional message. The guest speaker for the evening was Mrs, Gladys Allen of Wind- sor, the first vice-president of the Looks as though .the warm weather has had it, sure hope we have a half decent Indian Summer as I know there is a lot of us that have quite a few outside jobs to get finished prior to the arrival of the white stuff - burrrrr. Members of the Legion are reminded the Branch Early Bird Campaign is under way. How about getting your dues paid up now? Inflation hasn't hit them up to date and they are the best buy in town - Still only $12 for the year and this includes your subscription to the National Magazine 'LEGION'. Comrade Bill Smith and I will act as co-chairmen for Operation Service, which incidentally gets under way the early part of October. We have held and have B,W.M.S. of Ontario and Quebec, whose words of encouragement will help us to strive always onward. The service oncluded with the old hymn "Jesus Saves" this being the rally song and used at every meeting in the early years. attended several organizational meetings, there is one more to go and then, my Comrades, we will be calling upon you the members of the Legion and this means all classifications, to avail your- selves to make certain this most important service to ex-service men and women and i or their dependants does not fail. We have a \solemn obligation to uphold - remember it - 'May their sacrifice ever inspire us to labour on, to the end that those who survived and need our aid may be assured of assistance.' This is it Comrades, here is where we can let all ex-service personal, be they members of the Legion or not, know their rights under Veterans Legislation. We will be making use of the telephone very, shortly looking for team captains. Comrade Bill and I will hold a meeting with you and explain what is expected, and let me assure you the procedure laid on by Command is very simple and straight forward and no one should experience any difficulty. • We anticipate it shouldn't take the canvassers any more than a couple of days to complete the Lucan Legion coverage area. However it will take Comrade Bill and I quite a bit longer to' calculate the final result. Remember the Legion is not selling anything. This is a free service and it is our earnest desire that every Ex-service person and their dependants be contacted. From pilot programs it has been learned that many of our Comrades were not aware of their rights under Veterans Legislation, which through the years has broadened, and it is the Legion's Aim to bring this to their attention. Attended a Branch Officers Seminar at Victory Branch, London over the weekend with Comrades from District 'A' and 'B' in attendance. I have been a member of the Legion for quite a few years and let me tell you I came away from the meeting feeling that the time was well spent. It was just like a refresher course, it brought back to mind points forgotten and reminded us of the proper procedures to follow and the responsibilities of the various positions in Legion from President down. The Command Officers who conducted the seminar are to be congratulated - It was well 'prepared, well presented and most interesting - seminars such as this tend to become boring - let me assure you this one was far from that and kept the interest of 411 in attendance. And that's 30 for this week - Remember - People who are nuts take sanity for granted. Lucan wins • in soccer In an exhibition Minor soccer game Tuesday night, the Lucan mosquitoes edged gxeter 2-1.
