Farquhar came in to score on Doug Pearson's single. Lieury scored their final run as Bill Woodburn scored on Gerry Morley's single. Bob Robinson started for Lieury and took the win. He was relieved in the fifth by Glenn Thompson. They combined to give up six hits while striking out five batters. Brian Hodgins started for the Royals and took the loss. He was relieved by Gord Mauer in the fifth inning. They allowed eight hits. The Royals opened the scoring Thursday in the top of the first inning as Pete Glover reached on a walk and scored on Doug Pearson's single. They Lieury team came back to tie the game in the last of the fourth as Les Drury reached first and came around to score without EMHA sets registration Huron club is eliminated The Huron mosquito soccer team was eliminated from the Michigan-Ontario Cup com- petition Sunday when they lost a close 2-1 decision to the North Detroit Selects. The game was played in Detroit. Huron opened the scoring after only 10 minutes of play when right winger Carl Krohmer of Goderich found the Detroit netting with a fierce 20 yard drive. The local club continued to press in the balance of the first half but were unable to add to their goal total. Midway through the second half a defensive blunder allowed the Detroit team to equalize the score and with five minutes remaining the winning goal was scored on a disputed corner kick. Joining Detroit in the semi- final rounds are Toronto, Wind- sor and Northern Michigan. The Huron team's excellent goals record throughout the competition gave them an official fifth place finish ahead of the other 66 competing house league teams from Michigan and Ontario. At a reception held Sunday evening at Detroit's Warren ,Gymnasium, the Huron players received quarter-finalist medals and a great ovation for their outstanding Cup performances. :;The closing of a large number of arenas throughout the proAnce caused plenty of concern when the announcements wete, first made but now that it is time for normal ice in- stallation and making solid plans for the coming hockey seas9n it's a very acute problem. Many Minor Hockey Associations are being forced to find Palternate homes for their hockey teams and those arenas which are allowed to operate are having trouble fit- ting all prospective clubs into their schedule. ;,Exeter minor teams will be using ice time at Huron Par* while the Exeter Hawks junior club will be making use'of the Zurich arena as their home base. he only exception for the Hawks will be their first horrie game on October 15 which will be played at Huron Park. The Exeter figure skating club will be having a .omewhat restricted schedule using what time they can secure at Hensall and Huron Park. .,At the moment the Hensall situation also appears to be far from cleared up and it's not certain whether the arena there will be allowed to operate or not this winter. Doug Andrews, manager of the Ilderton arena tells us he has his schedule completely filled. His extra activity comes from Strathroy and Lucan. The latest news of increased grants from Wintario will certainly help all municipalities financially in repairing and constructing new arenas. The withdrawal of the Lambeth team from the Ontario Hockey Association Western Junior "D" league has caused concern among several of the clubs regarding the distribu- tion of ;players. At a recent meeting, league officials agreed that all Lainbeth players should be shared by all clubs which fall within the eligibility mileage range. This would mean Lambeth players could be picked up by Mt. Brydges, Belmont and Port Stanley. Lucan Irish manager Jim Freeman told us this week he will fight tooth and nail to see the players are spread fairly over all three clubs. He commented, "No way will we stand for any one club packing its roster." • On the subject of the Lucan Irish, Freeman feels his club should be strong this year. The club has already started workouts at the Ilderton arena and coach Reg Whaley is back at the helm. The Irish will be playing their home games in Ilderton until reconstruction of the Lucan arena is completed and hopefully this will occur by early January of 1977. Roofing has been removed from the arena and workmen of Frank Van Bussel and Son contractors are in full swing of demolition and then will go right into construc- tion. Contracts have already been let for supply of the necessary materials to rebuild the arena walls and roof. Jets ready to fly If the first workout of the Lucan-Ilderton Jets Sunday at Huron Park is any indication, the club should have a very successful season. Head coach Don Urbshott and his assistants Bill Bourne and Pete Loveless have a lot of good prospects to work with. The sort of letdown in minor professional ranks has brought some excellent candidates to the Jets camp. Of most interest to fans in this immediate area is the presence of Jack Chipchase at the Jets practice. Jack who is better known as "Chipper" was a junior star with the Toronto Marlboros and had a long and successful career in pro hockey culminating with last year as playing coach of the Roanoke Valley Rebels. His experience will certainly be an asset to the Jets defensive corps. Added to this are Brian Murphy and Rick McCann, two other very experienced pros. As coach Urbshott said at Sunday's practice the only weak spot at the moment is in goal. Last year's regular net- minder Sonny Pennington is working out with the Brantford seniors. Lorne Daer the other goalie from last year is ex- pected back but a backup netminder is needed. Back to the ice A former Exeter minor hockey performer is this week starting his fourth year as a linesman in the World Hockey Association. Graham Hun told us over the weekend that he will be in action this week in Cincinnati in his first game of the season. Graham says the WHA will operate on a much solider basis this year under the direction of new president Bill McFarland who was connected with the old Western league for many years. He indicated at least six clubs in the WHA operated at a profit last year and felt the entire loop was in a much better financial situation. This year WHA referees and linesmen will be handling only their own league games. In other seasons they handled contests for several minor loops and last year Hun worked asfa referee in some of the minor games. This year he will be back strictly as a linesman. Excellent races The six heats of harness races presented Saturday at the Exeter Fall Fair by the newly reorganized Exeter Turf Club provided plenty of excitement. The feature race provided as thrilling action as a racing fan could find anywhere. Two of the local favorites Dee G River and Galt Hill battled it out neck and neck in the early stages and then Margo Johnson and Hyatt's Boy took over. In the run to the wire Margo Johnson was just able to nose Hyatt's Boy driven by Dennis Morrissey in a very thrilling finish, Still uses gimmicks One of the most imaginative owners in major league baseball 'history is at It again in an attempt to lure fans to hit ball park': He is Pill Veeck, owner of the Chicago White Sox, Veek's latest publicity try was to put the White Sox atten- dance for the. year Over one million. Veeck Vvai stfccessful as just over 100,000 fans attended the last three he 'games of the season for the White Sox over the weekend and hit the one million mark. Lieury staved off elimination with a convincing 9-3 victory over the Exeter Royals Tuesday night in Exeter in the final round for the championship of the South- western Fastball Association, The Royals now lead the series three games to two. They had taken a two game lead in the series as the result of a close 2-1 win Thursday in Lieury. The sixth game is being played tonight, Thursday in Lieury and if a seventh is necessary it will be played in Exeter Sunday night. All games begin at 9 p.m. Tuesday night Lieury opened the scoring in the first inning as they scored three runs. Lloyd Mathers led off being hit by a pitch. Steve Hemming hit a single. Glenn Thompson reached on an error and Bob Robinson then hit a two run single. The Royals got one run back in the bottom of the second as Bill Farquhar doubled and scored on Doug Pearson's single. Lieury added another run in the top of the third as Steve Hem- ming singled and came in to score. The eventual winner added two more runs in the top of the fourth as Bill Woodburn reached on an error, Tom Daley singled and both scored as Lloyd Mather's grounder was bobbled. Lieury added two more runs in the fifth as Les Drury singled and Bob Robinson hit a towering home run. Exeter scored their final runs Shooters busy despite weather Despite rainy weather Sunday 10 members of the Exeter claybird gun club participated in the weekly shoot and Randy Stanlake proved to be the best marksman edging Bill McNutt by a single bird. In class B competition Bill McNutt and Glen Vickery were deadlocked with identical scores of 20. Randy Stanlake with a high score of 21 was best in the C division. He was followed by Larry Mason and Carl Hefford with a high of 20 apiece. Kevin Stanlake proved best in the junior class with a score of 16, The only new shooter was Ron Mason and he compiled a score of 14.
