Exeter Pair attracts best crowd in several ears
categories were Mrs. Keith
McLaren, Mrs, Ray
Ann Dearing and Pam Coward.
A successful parade from the
south end of town to the fair
grounds Saturday morning was
led by the Seaforth District High
School pipe band and the Listowel
Legion band.
Murray Greene won the prize
for the best decorated car
followed by Exeter Golf Course,
A & H Food Market and Whiting's
Warehouse.
The best business float award
went to Pride Corn and Doug
Lightfoot of Crediton, Next came
Pioneer Corn by George Sereda,
The weatherman smiled on the
Exeter Fair Saturday and the
largest crowd in many years
responded to take in the large
number of feature attractions.
Secretary Garnet Hicks said
Monday morning, "While I
haven't compiled all figures, the
crowd Saturday was close to
3,000.
Close to, 1,000 persons were in
attendance Friday night to
watch an interesting talent show
and see the crowning of Miss
Exeter Fair and four Queens and
Princesses in the ladies division,
Lisa Westcott representing the
Exeter Golf Course was crowned

Queen of the Fair by last year's
winner Elaine Overholt of
Centralia. The runner-up was
Kim Turner of Exeter who
represented Bestline Products
and Miss South Huron District
High School Brenda Neil was
third.
Alberta Gregson was named
senior baking queen and her
junior counterpart was Janet
Shapton, Mrs. Orlen Sch-
wartzentruber of Zurich was
crowned sewing Queen for the
second consectutive year and
junior honours went to Lynn
Clarke.

Scott's Leather and Hopper-
Hockey,
The Exeter Legion float was
judged best for clubs and
organizations. The Kirkton
Women's Institute was second
and South Huron Recreation
Centre third,
The best horse drawn float was
entered by Top Notch Feeds of
Seaforth with Mathers Motors
and Cook's Gerbro next.
The only comic float was en-
tered by the Beta Sigma Phi
Sorority, It depicted a Red Cross
blood donor clinic complete with
nurses and patient.
The best decorated bicycles
were entered by Michael Dykstra
and Dianne and Melonie War,
wick, Taking novelty bicycle
awards were Debbie Forrest,

Council
briefs
Statistics presented to County
Council at ,its Septetfiber
meetings by the Land Division
Committee showed that, for the
period ending August 31, there
had been 196 applications for
reverence, 130 approvals, 10
denied, 54 were still pending, two
had been withdrawn and four
were under appeal.

The Secondary Plans for
Howick and Usborne townships
were passed under Amendment
Number 10 and 14 to the Official
Plan for the County of Huron
Planning Area.

The Planning Board authorized
R. Dzus to attend the University
of Waterloo — Southwestern
Ontario Chapter of Canadian
Institute of Planners three day
workshop on agricultural and
rural planning at Waterloo: The
Board will pay the $125
registration fee and expenses.

The Land Division Committee
announced the election of Harold
Robinson to the Board of
Directors of the Ontario
Association of Committees of
Adjustment and Land Division
Committees for 1976-77.

The-Land Division Committee
reported that the actual ex-
penditures for the period ending
August 31 has been $24,533
compared to an estimate of
$26,960.

The County Planning Board
has authorized the Planning
Director to attend a Heritage
Planning Symposium September
10 to 12 sponsored by Heritage
Canada, the Ontario Heritage
Foundation and the Frontenac
Historic Foundation.

Six heats of excellent harness
racing featured the Saturday
afternoon show, Margo Johnston,
an eight year old bay mare
driven by Art Abbott won the
feature race edging Hyatt's Boy
owned and driven by Dennis

The Exeter Fair feeder calf
club competition was won by
Wayne Shapton, His prize calf
was purchased by Darling's IG
for 70 cents per pound. The
reserve champion calf owned by
Janet Shapton was purchased by
the hayfield Meat Market for
621/2 cents per pound.
The new gym at South Huron
District High School was used to
facilitate the Friday evening
program while ladies work,
domestic exhibits and some farm
produce were shown in the old
gym Friday evening and again
all day Saturday.
The gymnasium at Exeter
Public School was utilized both
days showing of the many entries
by area elementary school
students,
The Friday evening program
was officially opened by Exeter
mayor Bruce Shaw, fair
president Jack Stewart, Huron-
Middlesex MPP Jack Ridden,
Huron warden Jack McCutcheon,
Stephen reeve Cecil Desjardine
and Usborne reeve Walter
McBride.
