Times-Advocate, September 23, 1976 IT'S FAIR TIME AGAIN Page 17 New features and a shift in location of some of the activities will highlight the 1976 Exeter Fall Fair which gets underway Friday night and continues through Saturday. Due to closure of the Exeter arena, all public school exhibits will be shown in the gym- nasium of the Exeter Public School while general exhibits will be 'set up in the old gym at South Huron District High School. The 122nd edition of the Fair officially gets underway 'at 7:30 p.m. Friday with special ceremonies. Heading the list of dignitaries and declaring the fair open will be Exeter mayor Bruce Shaw. He will be assisted by fair president Jack Stewart, Huron-Middlesex MPP Jack Riddell, Huron warden Jack McCutcheon, Stephen reeve Cecil Desjardine and Walter McBride, reeve of Usborne township. One of the feature attractions of the Friday night show to be held in the new gym at the high school will be the crowning of the Fair Queen. No less than 9 pretty girls from Exeter and surrounding area will be attempting to win the title taken last year by Elaine Overholt of Centralia. The second Queen to be named Friday will be the Baking Queen. This honour will go to the lady accumulating the most points in Class 53 Domestic. She will receive a cash, award of $1.5 from The Times Advocate. Last year's winner was Ila Love. Two sewing Queens will also be crowned Friday night. Women's Institutes from Huron- dale, Elimville and Crediton are providing prizes for the top exhibitors in junior and senior divisions. Exeter mayor Bruce Shaw will be providing prize monies for a men's cake baking contest. The cake must be of the chocolate variety. A cake mix may be used butthe contestant must handle the icing chores personally. The only female help allowed will be strictly vocal. Friday night's' program will include an amateur talent competition with prizes provid- ed in three categories. They are instrumental, vocal and specialty. Saturday's portion of the fair starts at 10:15 ,at.tire.lairgrounds' with a =horse show fot elementary school students. A parade is scheduled to leave the Snell Bros. parking lot at 11:30 a.m. with good prizes for the various categories. Cash prizes of $20 will go to each of the winners in decorated cars, business floats, club or organization floats, comic floats and the best horse drawn vehicles. The parade will be led by the Seaforth District High School girls trumpet band and a pipe band from the Listowel Legion. Continuous music will be supplied throughout the afternoon by several bands. A directory sign will be posted east of the arena to list the times and locations of the various events. A feature of the Saturday afternoon program will be six harness races held under the sponsorship of the recently reorganized Ex- eter Turf Club. They will begin at 2 p.m. and pari mutuel wagering will be available. During the afternoon there will be .a senior horse show, •poultry show, barrow show and four area 4-1-1 clubs will be participating. ,ln addition 17 members of the Exeter Agricultural Society feeder calf club will put their animals up for public auction. Larry Gardiner will be the auctioneer. Fair board members are currently selling tickets on a draw with six valuable prizes be- ing donated by various area businesses and fair supporters. The draw will be made at the fair dance to be held Saturday night at the Ex- eter Legion Hall. Heywood's orchestra will be supplying the music. Special displays are being provided by the Exeter Nursery School, Sunshine Kids Inc. Nursery School and the Huron Hope School. Donna Webster, president of the School divi- sion of the fair expects to have larger than ever' representation from area public and separate schools. Other displays in the school gym will include Joyce Morgan's ceramics, rock polishing by Tom McMillan and model wooden toys produc- ed by Herman Van Wieren. All attending Friday's beauty and talent show at the high school will be eligible for this added prize. in conjunction with the fair a music jam- boree will be held at the Hensall arena Sunday afternoon. Organizers Norm Whiting, Bob Heywood and Jerry MacLean have lined up more than 10 country and western bands to provide continuous entertainment. Jack Riddell, M.P.P,, Reeve of Usborne, Walter McBride, Reeve of Stephen, Cecil Desjardine and Warden Jack McCutcheon will also be in attendance. The amateur talent com- petition ,which proved to be a big hit last year, will be held on Friday night. A 1976 Queen of the Exeter Fair will be crowned by Miss Elaine Overholt, Centralia, our 1975 Queen, Many exhibits of the ladies division, grains and seeds and 4- H displays will be found in the small auditorium of the South Huron District High School, School Fair exhibits will be on display in the auditorium of the Exeter Public School. Saturday morning the parade leaves Snell Bros, parking lot at 11:30 a.m. with the Listowel Pipe Band and the girl's band from Seaforth District High School leading the way, Outdoor exhibits for the School Fair will be judged beginning at 10:15 a.m. followed by 4-H Horse Club, 4-11 Calves and Feeder Calves and the auction of the Feeder Steers will be held at 3 p.m. There is also a horse show, sheep show and poultry show in the afternoon. Horse races will be a highlight Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. The Exeter Fair Dance will be held Saturday night, September 25, at the Exeter Legion Hall. Once again the Country and Western Jamboree will be held Sunday, September 26, at 2 p.m. at the Hensall Community Centre. I would like to thank all the exhibitors for their enthusiasm in showing articles in the ladies work and appreciation for the exhibitors, advertisers, cash and merchandise donors and also for the local municipality grants. It is with this combined financial assistance that makes our Fair an annual event: We are extremely grateful to the directors and many willing workers who give so much free time to make a function such as our Exeter Fair a success. donations of cash and mer- chandise received for prizes. Also my thanks to all the directors and the willing workers on the committees for their ex- cellent co-operation in planning and working to make this fair, in a little more difficult situation, a success. Following the talent show on Friday evening will be the crowning of our Fair Queen. We will also be presenting crowns to our Sr. Baking Queen; Sr. Sewing Queen, Jr, Baking Princess and Jr. Sewing Princess.
