Childrens" Aid
gets supervisor
Mr. John V. Penn, M.S.W.,
A.A.1VI.F.C., formerly associat-
ed with the Niagara Region
Family and Children's Services,
has joined the staff of the
Children's Aid Society of Huron
County, assuming the position
of Supervisor effective Septem-
ber 1, 1976.
Born and raised in Great
Britain, Mr. Penn was a Social
Worker in London, England and
emigrated to Canada in 1968
where he began his professional
career in child welfare in the
Niagara Region agency,
Will need
self control
The Goshen United Church
in Stanley township, just four
miles north of Zurich, is losing
a tradition which has already
disappeared from every church
in the area-its outhouse.
The church congregation has
decided to donate enough
money to renovate the base-
inent, and one of the renova-
tions will be two bathrooms
A new furance is already in
place and additional kitchen
cupboards and repairs will
also be done to modernize the
facilities available.
The committee in charge of
the renovations hopes to have
them completed before the
annual turkey dinner usually
held at the end of October and
at the rate they are going this
is not too unlikely. Although
the money is all in the form of
donations, the labor isn't as
very little of the labor is volun-
teer help.
None the less, this is a com-
munity project, and will bene-
fit all those who attend the
church at any time.
It will be kind of sad to see
the old outhouse go though, if
nothing else it certainly taught
restraint and self-control and
made more than one member
of the congregation feel just
a little bit humble.
All you need
is a freezer
The sale of first class beef will
feature the Saturday afternoon
portion of the Exeter Fall Fair,
Members of the Exeter Fair
feeder calf club will be showing
their animals early in the af-
ternoon and therr they will be
auctioned to the highest bidders.
Calf: club publicity chairman
Bruce Shapton stressed this week
that anyone is eligible to purchase
a calf at this sale. He said some
people had the mistaken idea that
only meat markets and
processors were allowed to buy
the calves.
Shapton continued, "This is not
correct. Anyone can buy a calf.
All you really need is a freezer, a
little cash and a taste for beef."
Staffa area auctioneer Larry
Gardiner will be on hand to try
and get the highest prices for the
17 calves to be shown by the local
club members.
The calves were purchased last
fall from the Hensall Sales barns
and distributed to the members.
The calves will be picked up from
each member's farm Saturday
morning and taken to Hensall to
be weighed. A shrinkage of three
percent will be allowed from the
actual weight before the calves
are sold.
Howard Pym is the chairman
of the Exeter Fair feeder calf
club.
Mr. Harry Lear was guest
soloist at the Sunday morning
chapel service and was accom-
panied at the organ by his
wife, Gail. The service was
conducted by the Chaplain,
Rev. McWhinnie, with Doug
Crich at the organ.
Marie Flynn, Norman Speir
and Lorne Lawson provided the
old tyme music for Monday's
activities. Three new residents
were welcomed to the Home:
Mrs. Underwood, Wingham,
and Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Love,
Hensall. The special guest
'for the afternoon was Mr. Allan
Johns of Vancouver, B.C.,
a native of Tuckersmith and a
very active volunteer worker
in his home community: The
Clinton Christian Reform vol-
unteers assisted with the
activities.
"The Pathfinders" a group
of seven girls from the Blyth
Christian Reform Church, en-.
tertained on Family Night with
gospel music. The girls sang
several of the older hymns tak-
ing different parts and in har-
mony-the favourite being the
old spiritual "Steal Away".
The Crediton Women's Insti-
tute were hosts for the Septem-
ber birthday party. Mrs. Nor-
man Eveland was emcee for the
afternoon. Mrs. Don Fink-
beiner, Lois Hodgins, Otis
Sawyer, Ross and Nola Love
provided the program. Gifts
were presented to the twenty-
seven celebrants and lunch
was served by, the ladies.
