Seniors elect officers 4,
At the latest meeting of Lucan
village council, several tenders to
supply material for re-
construction of the Lucan arena
were accepted.
Demolition of the present arena
building began this week and
construction of a new shell is
expected to get underway shortly
and it is hoped to have the arena
'eady for use by early December.
Huron Steel of Lambeth wiff
supply and install the necessary
structural steel for $127,780 and
the steel decking will be provided
by Westeel Rosco. Both bids were
the lowest received.
No bids were received for
Last week end it was my
pleasure to be invited to Branch
194, Hornepayne as their guest at
the mortgage burning ceremony.
For a town of 1,800 population, 61
miles north of White River they
deserve a lot of credit. Just 10
years ago they built a new Legion
Hall about twice the size of
Lucan's and in this short period
of time the building is completely
paid for.
Let me tell you they put on a
`really big show'. 285 persons sat
down to supper and there was lots
of room. The Ladies Auxiliary
alone donated over $38,000 to the
project. Just a real great effort
by a group of dedicated mem-
bers.
Starting Saturday, October 2nd
and every second Saturday
thereafter until some time in
April Branch 540 will be holding a
mixed darts night — So come on
all you dart players, place your
demolition of the present building
and council appointed Frank Van
Bussel and Sons as project
managers.
Rates to be received by the
Lucan area construction firm for
demolition and construction will
be basic hourly rate for em-
ployees plus 20 percent; super-
vision, and administration at $400
per week; overhead at five
percent of the total construction
costs and this will include
carrying charges, office ex-
penditures, small trucks, small
tools, power tools, office site and
storage shack.
Councillor Norm Steeper,
name on the list provided, At the
end of the tournament there will
be prizes galore and a gala
banquet to wind up the season.
Sounds like a lot of fun — but only
you the members and guests can
make it successful.
Many thanks to Comrade
Goring who donated a pair of
crutches to the Branch. Possibly
many are not aware the Lucan
branch of the Legion has many
items at their disposal which are
available, on Loan, to any person
requiring them, wheel chairs,
crutches, hospital beds just to
mention a few. Another free
service of your local Legion.
Bob Coughlin, Lucan was the
winner of the August cheque
draw.
And that's 30 for this week —
remember — Money may talk,
but today's dollar doesn't have
cents enough to say much.
chairman of the committee to
select a new clerk-treasurer to
replace Mrs. M.L. Gibson who is
retiring reported 11 applications
have been received.
Mrs. Gibson has been involved
with municipal work in Lucan for
more than 50 years. She will be
responsible for the 1976
municipal elections before her
retirement takes effect.
Council approved a request
from the Lucan Horsemen's
club to close off a portion of Main
Street, Saturday night, Sep-
tember 18 while a street dance is
in progress.
Northbound traffic will be
rerouted to Concession 4 to
Market and back to Main while
southbound vehicles will proceed
on Frank to William to Main.
Bryan Smith was named to
complete the term of George
Noyes as a member of the Lucan
planning board.
Council approved sewage
works as submitted by Dave
Thompson for a sewer on
Chestnut street between Highway
4 and Butler Street. Such sewer is
to become part of the existing
sanitary sewage system as
outlined in the agreement with
the Ontario Ministry of the
Environment.
Council instructed Mrs. Gibson
to use tax arrears procedures as
contained in the Municipal Act.
As of January 1, 1976 all tax
arrear accounts were turned
back to Middlesex municipalities
by the County of Middlesex.
Members of council voiced
opposition to a suggestion by the
Ontario Ministry of Tran-
sportation and Communications
to change the speed limits at the
south and north limits of the
village.
The Ministry suggested the
present 45 mile per hour
restriction in effect be eliminated
and 50 hour speeds be allowed
until the present 30 mile per hour
zones are reached.
Objection by council members
were based on the beginning of
the 30 mile zone near the public
school and they felt traffic could
not be expected to slow doWn so
quickly.
No injuries were reported when
a school bus was involved in an
accident at the intersection of
Highways 4 and 7 at Elginfield,
Friday morning.
The bus driven by Walter
Emmerson Wallis, R.R. 1,
Granton, was taking high school
students to Medway and was
westbound on Highway 7 when it
was in collision with a vehicle
driven by Albert Vanderhayden,
Strathroy, which was eastbound,
Constable J.A. Wilson of the
Lucan OPP detachment in-
vestigated and set damages at

Thursday afternoon at 4:30
p.m. vehicles driven by Helen
Lucille Blake, and Stephen
Carter, both of R.R. 2, Lucan
collided on the Clandeboye
sideroad, just west of County
road 22.
Constable W.A. Disher was the
investigating officer and set
damages at $1,000.
At the same time, a London
OPP 'cruiser was damaged to the
extent of $800 when it struck the
railroad track at Granton while
chasing a speeder.
Constable Donald Carson was
the driver' and the mishap was
investigated by Cpl. W. Kalohon
of the London detachment. The
speeder was apprehended.
Sunday at 7:15 p.m. vehicles

Lucan and Philippe Maes, R.R, 2,
Lucan were in collision on High-
wa 7, almost two miles west of
Elginfield. Constable W.T.
Hodgins listed damages at $1,000.
Constable N.A. Campbell set
damages at $300 when vehicles
driven by Thomas Doxtator,
Southwold and Peter Hipwell,
London were involved in a
mishap on Highway 7, east of the
Thames River bridge in Man-
shard township, Wednesday at
8:15 p.m.
