UCW finalize plans
for chicken barbecue Five break and enters

Executive members and group
leaders of the Lucan United
Church Women met in the C.B.
wing on Thursday evening, with
Mrs. David Park chairing the
meeting. Sevieral projects were
reported on but the main purpose
of the meeting was to finalize
plans for the annual Chicken
Barbecue to be held at the
Church, on Wednesday, Sep-
tember 22, commencing at 5 p,m.
It was decided to have ad-
vanced sale of tickets only to
avoid disappointment for some
friends, This plan works'in other
centres, but it will be the first
time the Wean U.C,W. has tried
it. Get your tickets from, any
member. (See Ad)
Damages totalled $15,775 in
seven accidents investigated this
week by officers of the Lucan
detachment of the Ontario
Provincial Police.
The most property loss oc-
curred Monday afternoon at 4:50
p.m, as the result of a three
vehicle mishap on County Road
23 at the intersection of Con-
cession 8-9 in London township.
Constable G. N. Wilcox set
damages at $9,400 when vehicles
driven by Aldo Scarpelli, Lon-
don; John Classen, RR 3 Ilderton
and Alec Fekete, Ingersoll
collided.
Three of the accidents occurred
Saturday. The first took place at 9
a.m. on Market street in Lucan
and involved two residents of the
same street. The drivers were
Ross Clifford Holden and Bar-
bara Lee Avery. Constable D. R.
Vance set damages at $325.
At 8:05 p.m. a vehicle driven by
Bert Appleman, RR 1 Lucan,
struck a parked tractor on Alice
street in Lucan, The farm vehicle
is owned by Harry Arnold.
Constable B. D. Munro listed
damages at $300.
Constable Wilcox estimated
damages at $600 when vehicles
driven by Herbert Dingwell, and
Anthanasios, both of London
collided on Highway 4, a short
distance north of Concession 13-14
in London township.
The accident occurred at 11:10
p.m. Dingwell and a passenger
Shirley Dingwell suffered cuts
and bruises.
Friday at 2 p.m , three persons
were taken to Victoria Hospital,
London by Lucan Ambulance
Service following a crash on
Highway 4 at Elginfield.
Driver of one of the vehicles
Lanny Ross Brown, Strathroy
and two passengers Sharon and
Terry Brown were hospitalized
and received treatment for minor
injuries.
The other vehicle was driven
by 'Hilda Schellenberger, RR 2
Mitchell. Constable Vance set

Members and prospective
members of the Lucan Senior
Citizens Sunshine and Busy
Buddies' Groups (crafts) are
reminded that the regular
meetings commence today,
Thursday, at 1:30, with a short
business meeting, together, then
breaking into their respective
groups.
Busy Buddies' members are
asked to bring their liquid em-
broidery paints to work on the
club quilt as our instructor for
flower arranging is not available
until next Thursday.

A pony valued at $100 and
owned by Mrs. George Westman
was killed at 12:55 a.m. Thursday
when it was struck by a vehicle
driven by Ronald G. Jones,
Granton, The mishap occurred on
County Road 23. north of High-
way 1. Constable N, A. Campbell

was damaged to the extent of
$2,500 when it left the roadway of
Concession 13-14 in London
township, Wednesday at 1:10
Ilotson said Community Centre
grants of $75,000 each for the
arena and community hall had
been approved. Wintario grants
are expected to bring the total
provincial help to 50 percent of
the total cost.
In conclusion Hotson stressed
the fact that the entire project
will he financed without any help
through municipal taxes.

Rev, Ewart Madden continued
his series on "Change" speaking
of the change wrought in the Jews
by the teachings of John the
Baptist. His message was one of
protest, but more it was a
message of proclamation of great
things to come. His was a new
voice in the land and God through
John, spoke to the people, who
confessed their sins and were
baptized.
However John told them "one
will come who will baptize you
with the Holy Spirit and with
fire",
' Mr. Madden announced that
the committee of stewards is
called to meet Tuesday evening,
September at 8 p.m, and the
elders at 7:30 Sunday evening,
September 12. The Scout group
committee is called to meet at 8
p.m. Monday, September 13. The
foregoing meetings will all
convene in the C.E. Wing.
Also on Tuesday, September 7,
the Cradle Roll will meet from 10
to 11 a,m, with crafts, singing,
etc. All preschoolers and their
parents are invited.

Five break and enter incidents
were investigated this week by
officers of the Ontario Provincial
Police detachment at Lucan.
Sometime between August 24
and 26, the home of John
McIlhargey at Lot 18, Concession
16 of London township, near
Elgin field was entered and an
antique ring valued at $1,000 was
taken. Constable Jim Craig is
investigating.
Bank robbery
Officers of the Lucan detach-
ment of the Ontario Provincial
Police are continuing their in-
vestigation of a robbery of the
Arva branch of the Canadian
Imperial Bank of Commerce,
Wednesday morning. Joining in
on the investigation is Detective
Inspector Dennis Alsop.
At about 10:30 a.m. two armed
men with stocking masks con-
fronted assistant accountant
John Kokoszka. They ripped the
telephone from the wall, forced
the bank employee to lie on the
floor and escaped with about
$1,000 in cash.
Immediately after their
departure Kokoszka pressed the
bank alarm which rings in the
nearby London township office.
Municipal employee Jean
Cassina quickly phoned the
Lucan OPP detachment and
Constable G. J. Barker was
despatched to the scene.
Robert iVicRiniay of Lot 28,
Concession 11, London township
reported to police that boat ac-
cessories valued at $348 were
taken from a Starcraft boat
parked on his property sometime
between August 23 and 25,
Constable 13.D. Munro is the
investigating officer.
During the early hours of
Thursday morning, Culbert's
Variety on Highbury Avenue was
broken into. Owner George
Falconer said entrance was
gained by breaking a window in
the kitchen area.
Thebuilding wasidamagedto the
extent of $75 and merchandise
including cigarettes, lighters,
wallets and candy valued at $290
was taken, The incident is being
investigated by Constable D.R.
Vance.
Vandals entered the Arva
Motors service station in Arva
during the early morning hours of
Monday and create damages
totalling $1,395 by spraying
vehicles with paint. Change in the
amount of $30 was also missing.
Constable Vance is investigating,
Siding valued at $160 was taken
recently from a building site
owned by Larry Burrows at Lot 8,
Concession 3 of West Nissouri
township.

Arena project starts,
canvassing at $106,000
Demolition of the Lucan arena
began this week and construction
of walls and roof over the ice
surface is expected to start as
soon as materials from the
present structure are removed.
Councils of the village of Lucan
and the townships of Biddulph,
McGillivray and London met
Thursday night and gave
unanimous approval to the Lucan
Community Centre Board to
proceed with the
Arena board spokesman Larry News from ee-construction.
Hotson said after Thursday's
meeting, "The reeves of all the Lucan UC municipalities are behind the
board one hundred percent so the
project can forge ahead."
Hotson said canvassing for
funds was coming along well with
contribOtions to date totalling
$106,350. He added, "We need
another $200,000.''
While the arena and com-
munity centre is one single
project construction will be
undertaken in two phases with
the arena coming first and a
community hall following.

ENUMERATION
STARTS NEXT WEEK
The annual municipal enumeration will be conducted between Tuesday,
September 7 1976 and Saturday. September 18, 1976 inclusive. During those
two weeks, an enumerator, carrying a proper identification card, will call at your
residence for a few minutes to check basic information required in determining:
• your eligibility to vote in the municipal and school board elections to be held
December 6, this year:
• the allocation of education property taxes between the public and separate
school systems:
• the distribution of provincial grants to local governments to help reduce local
tax bills:
• the preparation of jurors' lists: and
• population information needed for other municipal programs.
The enumerator must record such information as the name, age. property
status (e.g. owner or tenant), school support and residency of all members of
the household.
When the enumerator visits, please check that the information on the
Enumeration Notice is correct. If it is not, revise it and verify the changes.
If you are not home, a Notice will be left for you. If changes are necessary, please
make them and mail the Enumeration Notice, as soon as possible, in the self
addressed postage prepaid envelope accompanying the Notice. For any
additional information, please contact the local 'assessment office.
