Many area projects undertaken
Experience '76 drawing to close
The student construction crew
assisted the permanent staff in
the building of a new gateway
and fence at Port Blake Con-
servation Area and a new
gatehouse at Rock Glen Con-
servation Area.
The Experience '76 program
also employed five technical
students.
The Parkhill recreation and
education staff ran a.weekend
interpretive program at the
Parkhill Conservation Area. One
of their special events was the
Parkhill Canoe Regatta which
was very successful. The girls
were also involved in assisting
withOe/Authority's mobile trailer
display and creating displays for
the Activity Barn at Parkhill
Conservation Area.
Two geography students spent
their time on planning projects.
One student spent his time
working on a three dimensional
model of the Kime Property,
McGillivray Township and

received her Bachelor of Arts
degree from Victoria College at

revisions to the Kime inventory.
The other student completed
the Hay Swamp Acquisition
Study, the Lamond Property
resource inventory and assisted
with other Authority property
mapping projects.
The Program Manager for the
Authority's Experience '76
program assumed all clerical
and administration duties for the
program. She and the Authority
Superintendent coordinated the
projects.
The students greatly con-
tributed to the completion of
many worthwhile watershed
projects. Their enthusiasm and
dedication toward their summer
job was appreciated by the
permanent authority staff and
the Conservation Authority.

chairman of the Ontario Advisory
Council on the Status of Women.
Florence Henderson, FWTAO
executive secretary said that the
first year of negotiations under
the new provincial Collective
Negotiations Act and the federal
Anti-Inflation Act, saw the school
year ended with a high number of
contracts still unsettled.
Dr. Henderson also said some
school boards are using part of
the provincial grant for
elementary schools to help them
keep local mill rates down.
Margaret Beckingham of
Mississauga, retiring provincial
president said teachers must
publicly counter criticism
brought against them by some of
the public, and make people
understand they are highly
qualified professionals who care
about the children in their
classrooms.

Middlesex teachers urged
to promote professionalism
The Ausable-Bayfield Con-
servation Authority's Experience
'76 program sponsored by the
Provincial Goverment is quickly
drawing to a close.
Twenty-three students were
involved in this year's program.
The students were divided into
two crews. One in the north,
working out of the Exeter
headquarters and one in the
south, working out of Parkhill.
The students and the Authority's
permanent staff were involved in
all maintenance and develop-
ment projects carried out this
year.
The municipal crew, made up
entirely of students, spent the
majority of its time on municipal
projects requested by watershed
municipalities. The following
municipal projects were com-
pleted this year. Cemetery
cleanup in Arkona, beach
cleanup in Bayfield, municipal

for Helen Batten bride elect of
Saturday, on Monday evening at
the church. Helen was escorted to
the deeorated choir by Joan
Kerslake and Janet Kerslake
read the address.
A mock wedding with Joan
Pym, Joan Kerslake, Joyce
Fulton, Laura Johns, Sandra
Rowe, Denise Fletcher, Lori
Kerslake and Allen Pym with
Grace Pym on the piano en-
tertaining everyone. Carol Allen
read a poem. Helen thanked

The north student crew along
with the permanent staff spent
the majority of their summer in
northern park' maintenance and
development. They were in-
volved in projects such as
painting, step and bridge con-
struction, grass cutting, and
general maintenance and repairs
in Clinton, Crediton, Lucan and
Port Blake Conservation Areas
and the Bannockburn Wildlife
Area.
The south students and staff
crew maintained and developed
the Parkhill, Thedford, and Rock
Glen Conservation Areas.
Projects included brushing and
clearing the nature trails,
assistance in maintenance of the
tree nurseries, stream cleanup
and parking lot construction.

this community attended the 60th
anniversary of the Kirkton-
Woodham Farmers Club at the
Community Centre, Wed-
nesday evening. Afer the
bountiful supper meal there was
a ball game, a variety program
andlthe guestspeaker was Bruce
Murray of St. Marys who gave a
very interesting and humorous
talk.
A large number of ladies and
girls attended trousseau tea
Saturday afternoon and evening
at the home of Mrs. Lorne
Passmore in honor of her
daughter Sharon bride-elect of
this Saturday.

ZION
Memorial Day service was held
Sunday at Zion West cemetery.
The regular minister Rev. John
Beaton was speaker. Special
music was provided by Harry
Hero who sang God will take
care of you. The church choir
sang an anthem with Nancy Bern
as organist.
The secretary Ross Bern
brought the congregation up to
date on what had been done at the
cemetery and some future plans,
The service will be held again
next year at the same time.
Salary negotiations and the
Anti-Inflation Board, the size of
elementary school classes and
the amount of money being spent
on elementary schools were
issues discussed at the 58th an-
nual meeting of the Federation of
Women Teachers' Associations of
Ontario. The meeting was held
August 17 through August 20 at
the Royal York Hotel in Toronto,
Attending from Middlesex
were Sheila Greason, Plover
Mills School; Carol Anne
Pickering and Lynne Sinclair,
East Williams School; Pauline
Hunt, Willowdale School; Eva
Brophey, Colborne School,
Strathroy ; Marion Walker,
Adelaide and Parkhill Schools.
About 600 women who teach in
public elementary schools all
over Ontario attended to
represent the Federation's
31,000 members.
A study on The Abused and
Battered Child, done by an
FWTAO committee, was
released at the meeting. It em-
phasizes the increasing
seriousness of the problem and
recommends that schools offer a
course on parenting as part of a
possible solution.
Speaker at the annual dinner
was Lotta Dempsey, author and
columnist with the Toronto Star.
