Tuesday, August 10 the
Riverview W.I. ladies held their
annual "Family Night" and
entertained their husbands and a
few close friends,
The group met at the Ailsa
Craig Community Park and
shared a pot Tuck dinner at 7 p.m,
The weather contributed to a
most pleasant evening and much
visiting took place as the
weather, wheat harvest and the
good corn crops, etc. were all
thoroughly discussed.
A game of bingo concluded the
evening with the lucky winners
taking home prizes.
On behalf of the group
president Mrs. Alden Craven
thanked Mrs, Roland Neil and
her committee for the pleasant
evening of fun and fellowship.
Ailsa Craig
Bits and Pieces
Incredible as it seems,
calendars are once more turned
to the month of September and
we find summer blending into
autumn once again.
The 1st Ailsa Craig Cub Pack
spent an enjoyable weekend
camping out August 20th
weekend, The boys report they
had a great time and piled up a
lot of "camp fire" memories.
Kathy Oke of Carlisle and
George Labelle were married in
Carlisle United Church August 13
by the Rev. Charles Scott.
The Ebenezer Cemetery
Memorial service was held on
Sunday, August 28. Speaker was
the Rev, Bruce Pierce of
Crediton.
Congratulations to the Gerald
O'Leary family of RR 3, Ailsa
Craig who won the 1976 car in the
Lions Club draw on Saturday,
August 21 at the Parkhill arena.
The new car will happily replace
the family's '69 Pontiac,
For many of us much time
during the summer is put in
planting, cultivating, weeding
and harvesting vegetables for the
winter.
During a recent visit to the
Presqu'ile Provincial Park we
learned that in addition to the
common dandelion and cat-tail,
the colourful orange blossoms of
the day lily are also edible and
extremely nutritious.
This plant which has escaped
from flower gardens, may be
seen along roadsides throughout
the country. The flowers them-
selves may be coated in a rich
egg batter and quickly fried in oil
to produce a tasty vegetable,
The flowers may also be added
to so,ips and stews to impart a
delicate flavour of their own, and
the flower buds, before they open,
may be eaten raw or boiled like
green beans. Even their tuberous
roots may be eaten. Boiled in
water and served in melted
butter, these have a flavour even
better than sweet corn!
Fete bride at
Mt. Carmel
By PAUL SALMON
On the night of Thursday,
August 26, a shower was held for
Elizabeth Rutten in the gym-
nasium of Our Lady of Mt.
Carmel School. Elizabeth, who is
the daughter of John and
Christina Rutten, will soon
become the wife of Norman
Lukey, who is the son of Michael
and Elizabeth Lukey of London.
The shower was attended by
ladies from Mt. Carmel and the
surrounding area. Since male
reporters have extreme diffculty
sneaking into the company of
many ladies unnoticed, I must
trust sources who insist that
Elizabeth received many lovely
and useful gifts. All of us in the
area extend our wishes of good
luck to Elizabeth and Norman.
Although summer is the season
when most of us receive guests
from abroad and do some visiting
of our own, the family of Mr. and
Mrs. Don Darling seem to do
their own visiting and receive
visitors at a dizzying rate.
Scott Darling, the son of Mr.
and Mrs, Darling, last week
hopped on a plane bound for
Ottawa where he visited with his
cousin, Doug Darling. Mean-
while, back at home, the Darlings
have welcomed many visitors,
including Melanie Masse, Mrs.
Darling's niece from Detroit,
along with Melanie's mother,
Mrs. Norman Masse and Mrs.
Marcie Callery, Mrs. Darling's
sister from Windsor.
Last weekend, Mr. Darling's
aunt, Minnie Ellis and her son,
Bill, visited the Darlings) as did
another of Mrs. Darlings aunts,
Mae Felley and her daughter
Evelyn. Because of this large
influx of people into our area, I
am now seriously considering
quitting my job as a reporter and
applying for a Holiday Inn
franchise in this area. I will, of
course, offer family rates.-
On Sunday, August 22,
Catherine Lalande, the daughter
of Mr, & Mrs. Ilene Lalande
was baptized and welcomed as a
new member of the parish at Our
Lady of Mi. Carmel Church.
