Both the Red Cross swim programme and recreational swimming ended on Friday. Testing of Senior, Intermediate and Junior candidates on Saturday was very successful as 15 out of 19 swimmers earned their cards and crests. In their second, and final swim meet of the summer, the Lucan swim team won the senior division, but lost the Junior division and the overall meet to London Northridge. Putting forth a strong per- formance and gaining first place finishes for Lucan were Brian Dykman (freestyle); Paul Gilmour (breaststroke); Steve Glenn (freestyle and butterfly); Ron Glenn (freestyle and backstroke) and Cheryl Noyes (freestyle, butterfly and backstroke). Mr, Don Armstrong is the of- ficial Clinton Peewee coach, however, he was not present at the game in question. Mr. Silcock arrived at the game during the first half and at half time was observed in- structing the Clinton players. This is a form of coaching, and from the instructions given to the Clinton players and the absence of Mr. Armstrong, it was in- terpreted that Mr. Silcock was acting as a coach for the game. It is unfortunate that a word used in too general a term aroused such animosity against a newspaper and a club that per- mitted an article to be printed under their banners. However, these reports are written in an attempt to get people to attend the games, which are free at the Canner's Field on Tuesdays at 7 p.m. and are in keeping with the Exeter Centennial Soccer club's policy of encouraging people to attend. Yours sincerely, Exeter Peewee coach, Dave Zyluk Lucan soccer teams compete Sunday, August 29 three teams from the Lucan minor soccer league the atoms, mosquitos and a girls team, travelled to Cam- bridge for a soccer tournament. The tournament was organized by Jim Craig. who together with Reg Crawford coached the Atom team. They played a strong game in the first half but tired a little in 'the second half. After a good effort they lost 4-0. The mosquitos coached by Mike Mitchell and Peter Bakker played a strong game, but one little slip in the last few minutes in the game cost them a goal and they lost 1-0. The girls team put together and coached by Joan Crawford and Shirley Fowles played their hearts out, but again in the second half they tired and lost 3-0. They made an excellent showing however and with a little coaching and practice will no doubt improve greatly. The Cambridge teams will visit Lucan in two or three weeks. Lucan and area soccer fans will be informed by posters. Everyone is welcome to come and cheer for the Lucan soccer stars. Thanks go to the Lucan Irish for the use of their bus and Mrs.1 Marg Carroll for being an of-! ficient bus driver. Dear Sir: For the record we wish to state that the executive of the Exeter Centennial Soccer Club had no part in the writing or release of the game report which appeared in your newspaper on August 19. It is curious and rather ironic however to note that in their haste to lay blame and vent in- dignation upon The Exeter club, two of the writers of the letters which appeared in the August 26 issue, are guilty( of the very fault with which they unfairly charged the Exeter club, namely inac- curacy. In the letter signed by' an in- dividual who seems unwilling to reveal his or her identity and who masquerades under the nom de plume of 'Disgusted, the statement is made that the Exeter club "succeeded in rid- ding themselves of Silcock". Not only is this an unfortunate and imprecise use of the word "rid" in this context but it is also inaccurate. Mr. Silcock freely and voluntarily resigned from the Soccer club. He was never coerced to do so. Furthermore, the use of the word continue in the statement "Why do the Exeter Club con- tinue to release misleading to the press?" is both misleading and inaccurate as well. The executive of the Exeter Cen- tennial Soccer Club has never released or sanctioned the release of incorrect information to the media. In the letter from Dave Silcock there appears a rather illogical and mysterious statement about the Soccer club not desiring spectators at their games. One wonders wher'e he dreamed up this information, As a matter of record the Exeter Centennial Soccer club has always encouraged the at- tendance of parents and well- wishers not only in the columns of this very newspaper but quite recently in a letter which was sent to parents at the start of this season. The fact that parents have been available to drive EXETER MEN'S BOWLING LEAGUE GENERAL MEETING Tuesday, Sept. 7 • 8:00 P.M. AT BOWLING LANES ALL INTERESTED BOWLERS PLEASE ATTEND players to ,away games, speaks for itself. Yours truly, The Executive, Exeter Centennial Soccer Club Dear Disgusted: I have to agree with your comments in the last "Times- Advocate" issue. Let us please grow up and leave minor soccer for the kids, stopping this un- necessary politicking. If the local soccer club insists on attempting to make Silcock's The Crediton juniors were eliminated from Ontario Baseball Association playoffs Monday night when they dropped a 9-4 decision to Strathroy on the Crediton diamond. Strathroy won the first game of the best-of-three series on their home diamond Sunday afternoon by a score of 13-0. Three run outbursts by Strathroy in each of the second and sixth innings allowed Monday's victory over Crediton. To organize touch football If enough men in Exeter and area are interested a touch football league will be formed and games will probably be played Saturdays. Recreation director Jim McKinlay has scheduled an ,organizational, meeting for Wednesday, September 8 at 8 p.m. at the Exeter Public School library. McKinlay says several players in the rec softball league have shown interest. The rec director suggests this league can be operated at very little cost. All that is really needed is a field, a ball and at least seven'players on each team. name mud, or trying to drive him out of town, they should do this through the appropriate chan- nels. When Exeter Soccer Club writes its reports of games, they should concentrate on the play itself and the players, leaving out any immature and uncalled for gossip about the spectators. Surely such trivia would make better material for a soap opera. Double Disgusted (M. Langdon) London The first run for the home team came in the third frame when Ken Govers opened with a triple and came home on a single from the bat of Doug Mclsaac. In the Crediton eighth, Mclsaac singled with one out and rode home as Mike Desjardine blasted a double. In a last ditch effort in the ninth to stay alive, the Crediton youngsters were able to come up with two rubs. Paul Brooks singled, moved up on an error and scored on a fielder's choice by Pete Wuerth. The latter also crossed the plate on a single delivered by Rodger Finkbeiner. Rick Bowers was the starting pitcher for Crediton. Three errors by his mates in the second inning allowed Strathroy to score three times. Paul Brooks came on in relief in the seventh with nobody out and recorded seven strikeouts the rest of the way. In Strathroy Sunday afternoon, the Crediton bats were very quiet as John Bruyns threw a no-hitter and faced only one batter more than the minimum of 27. The only Crediton runners came in the seventh when Doug Osgood walked and was forced by Pete Wuerth. Rick Bowers and Kevin Bestard shared pitching duties for Crediton.
