THE 6511.11.ATEAT SILL or TUE iLLSr.
The election in South \ Huron last
Ntedneeday resulted, . as most of our
reeler' are no doubt aware by thie time,
in the retern'of Mr. Bishop, the Re-
form Catididate, by a imajority cf 14.
The majerity is small and the narrow
escape tile Reform party has had should
.teach them a salutary lessors. Had they
possessed the energy and had the or-
ganization of their opponents, there is
no reason why Mr. Bishop's majority
shoald not have been equal to that of
Mr. Gilobons taro years ago. On the
pert of Reformers there was -a feeling of
security as well as r eathy, the result of
141ich is that they haye had a very nar-
rew esc4e from defeat. Of course the
Tcries claim that the result of the elec-
tion shows that they h,aye gained over a
.-Ieree nnertber of Reformers, but the
‘, fell returns as compared with those of
t}ss election last year, show that the
*ries have polled 49 rotes less than they
polled in the same municipalities last
year. The reduced Reform majority is
due therefore wholly to the fact that a
I srge Reform vote remained unpolled.
We fear local and petcy jealousies had
amch tb do with the indifference of
ftet•rmers. They should learn a !meson
*ma the present contest, and follow the
example of their opponente, who lay
aside all such feelings wien election
time comes, and turn out to a man in
support of their candidate. Were Re-
formers to do the same they would be
much stronger than they now &re-
fit loOking over the returns, the re-
sult of the unity and oresnization of the
Comervatives is shown in the fact that
Mr. Cams has polled within 49 votes of
the total cast for the Conservative can-
idates last year, while Mr. Bishop falls
858 votes short of what were cast for
the Reform candidates. A sufficient
Reform vote, therefore, remained un-
rolled to giro Mr. Bishop! a rery hand-
some majority, instead of tho paltry 14
by which he is now returned.
With reference to the Town of Gode-
rich the result has taken eery many by
Surprise. Considerine the stories which
were circuLsted we only weeder that the
town did as well for Mr. flishop. The
electors were told that he had done all
he could agaiust the town, that he had
voted to have our taxes increased, that
he had endeavoured to have the coun-
try town removed from here, and other
etories equally false aud absurd. Code -
rich has bed no better friend in the
County Council than. Mr. Bishop, and
he has freenently stood up for our
rights so the risk of lesing his east for
doing so. And this is the return we
make him,
Buileaeing Yin Bishop aside so far

LO'ILS Riel X. 1'.
The election for the County of Pro-
venchette Manitoba, to fill the &eat ea -
mist bit.the death of Sir George E. CAr-
tier, took place on the 20th inst., and
resulted in the return of Louis Riel, the
rebel and, reurderer of Thomas Scott, by
acclamation. The member elect, against
whani a warraer for murder was recent-
ly issued, and who fled the Country to
eacape arrest, is aaid to be on his way
to Ottawa to take his seat when the
House meets to -morrow. Whether he
will be allowed to do so remains to be
men, but his election ptaces Sir John A.
Macdonald in a yery awkward position.
There is no doubt an amnesty was
promised him and the others concerned
in the rebellion of 1869-70, but the goe-
ernment has broken faith -and not pro-
ciaimed it. When, a short tinae ago,
warrants were welt Lensed against Riel
and Lepineeand the latter was arreeted,
Riel published the following protest: -
ST. VIT U., 17 Seit., 1873.
To -day Monsieur A. D. Tiepin° has
been arrested at Lis residency -in St
Bonifaco and lodged in pris m at Fort
Garry by the autherities.
Monsieur A. D. Lepine is thus molest-
ed because he is accused of havine taken
part in "certain actions" authorized by
theProvisienal Government of Assiniboia
in 1970. Blit the arrest of Monaieur A.
D. Lepine for such a reason is 0 great
injustice.
The Canadian Covernotent. which
has allowed it; has perjured itself twice
in respect to us. First, it broke en-
gagements it had authorized to be made
in its name. and which Sir J. A. Mac-
donald and Sir G. E. Cartier Lad really
made in its name in the month of May,
1370, with Judeo Black, Rev. Pere
Richot and Monsieur Alfred 11. Scett,
delegates of the Provisional Govern-
ment of Assinitsoia. After earda the
Canadian Government was false to the
word of honor of Our Wellbeloved and
illustrions Archishop Monsignetir Tache.
For in the month of May, 1870, Elie
Grace, laboring to reassure us to the
good intentions -and sincerity of the
Canadisn Government in treating with
onrdelegates,gavelme in name of Canada
his word of honor that none of ne would
be troubled or molested for having
taken part in the troubles that agitated
the country, and that a general amnesty
would be proclaimed before the arrival
of the 'new Governor.
To-dAy, therefore, as Morisieer A, D.
Lepine has been imprisoned contrary to
the sworn promise (foi) of the Canadian
Government, and as a large number of
our Ifelloweitizens are pursued and
molested by asaassins and unjust war-
rants, I protest against the odious arrest
of 11onsieur A. D. Lepine, against the
evils and persecutions to which the au-
thorities hare unjustly subjected us
since the 24th of the month of August,
1870. I appeal to God -1 appeal to men.
Lot is MIL.
These who were acquainted with the
circumstances of the rebellion never
doubted that the amnesty w -as promised
and the above protest leaves no deubt
of it. La Afirserm, a government organ,
now admits that it was, and the fact
gum; to show the duplicity of Sir John
A. Macdonald• In 1372, during the
elections, Sir John said at Peterbcro,
when speaking of Riel, "God knoW, he
(John A.) wished thee could catch him,"
find afterwards added, "Mr. Riel made
himself scarce, arid was now living in
peace acmes the bordeapady te foment

still a burning volcano." Later ou, at

the verdict rendered by the electors of

Yes. They aro quite disposed to am

"Mr. Case, a pronounced Liberal-

been victorious."- Leader.
A doebtfill victory for either Mr.

"We can assure our friends of South
