EXETER PHONE 235.2301 About pages, special events and Legislature tours Ppge 10 August 24, 1976 flikkifillif*M044101MaiiiMgCratoklili By JACK RIDDELL M..PP Huron-Middlesex As you know, each year quite a number of young people in Ontax:io have the opportunity of participating in the activities of the Ontario Legislature, in the capacity of Pages. Groups of twenty pages serve for a period of approximately six or seven weeks, and I believe that, for the most part, they find this an in- teresting and educational ex- perience. Since March 1, 1971, girls as well as boys have been eligible to become Pages, and applicants must have either Grade 7 or 8, with an average of over 80 per- cent. Students wishing to make application must write a personal letter to the Speaker of the House, the Honourable Russell D. Rowe, Room 193, Parliament Buildings, Queen's Park, Toronto, The letter should give details of education and background, as well as the reason for the applicant's in- terest in serving in the Legislature. When the Speaker writes to the student, giving the general requirements for the position of Page, the applicant then makes a formal application. For students who do not live in Toronto, it is necessary to make arrangements for ac- commodation in the City, and this is the responsibility of the Page's parents. In this connection I would like to stress that Pages are not allowed to leave the Parliament Buildings until they go home each day. Pages receive an honorarium of $7,50 a day at present, and if it is necessary to stay for a late sitting of the Legislature, each Page receives an additional half day's pay. Incidentally, the evening duties are arranged in such a way that no Page works late more than one evening a. week. As the payments are made on the basis of a computerized record, each student must have a Social Insurance Number. The Legislative Assembly supplies the uniforms for the Pages, and applicants are usually asked to come to Toronto for fittings approximately two or three weeks ahead of their tour of duty. Pages must buy their own meals while working at the Legislature, and this is no great problem as there are a number of excellent cafeterias in the Parliament Buildings. A qualified tutor is available at Wairnaha AVAILABLE AT COUNTRY CORNER MT. CARMEL - 237-3456 OPEN TILL 10 P.M. JKiAZA,',4 the Legislature, arid Pages are given some five hours of tutoring each week. A Page Master and Page Mistress are in charge of the young people, and every effort is made to provide recreation in the fresh air on a regular basis. There is also a Games. Room available in the quarters allocated to the Pages. It is always a great pleasure to welcome visitors from the Riding when they visit Queen's Park, Many thousands of people come to the Legislature each year, sometimes visiting as in- dividuals, but often in groups - such as school classes, Girl Guides and Boy Scouts, Senior Citizens and so on. In the period between January and June this year, some 980 groups par- ticipated in the organized tours - totalling approximately 33,500 people. During the recess, the tour lasts approximately half an hour, but when the House is in session, a half-hour visit to the Legislature is included for a total of one hour. This gives people an opportunity to witnesss the debates which take place, and one of the most interesting periods for visitors is the Question Period. The guides who conduct the tours, as well as giving the historical and legislative history of the Ontario Legislature, also take visitors to the Heritage Rooms, providing interesting Many visit Crediton East By MRS. Groups are usually photographed on the main stairway of the Legislative Building, and these photographs are a pleasant memento of an interesting day, Visitors are also given a "tourist package" which at the present time consists of three booklets - one by Ontario Hydro on the Gifts of Nature, another called "Grandeur, Ghosts and Gargoyles", an entertaining history of Queen's Park, and a third called "People, Ideas and Laws". The package also con- tains a card on the Province's coat of arms, arid a medallion, with the trillium on one side, the coat of arms on the other. If you wish to arrange a group visit to the Legislature, I would suggest that you try to make your arrangements approximately two months in advance of the proposed visit, to avoid disap- pointment. I shall be happy to take care of these arrangements for yOu, if you wish. May I also take this op- portunity to remind you that arrangements \ can be made for people celebilating 50th (and upwards) Wedding Anniver- saries, and 90th (or more) Bir- thdays to receive com- memorative Scrolls, or plaques, from the Province of Ontario. Please let me know details of any such events in the Riding. Scrolls are also available for other special occasions, such as a Town's 50th or 100th Anniver- sary, special acts of heroism, or long-standing community ser- vice.
