Should be great series
Last week we talked only briefly about the Canadian
team entered in the upcoming Canada Cup '76 International
Hockey Series. This week a few further comments on our
team's chances.
The series will open September 2 with national teams
from the United States, Sweden, Czechoslovakia, Finland
and the Soviet Union in addition to our Canada team,
Six of the 15 games in the round robin tournament will
be played in Montreal, four in Toronto, two in Philadelphia
and one each in Ottawa, Winnipeg and Quebec City.
After the 15 games have been completed, the top two
clubs will meet in a best-of-three series for the grand cham-
pionship.
The team which will represent Canada this time should
have less trouble in playing together than some of their
predecessors did.
The team will consist of three of the MO:' productive
forward lines in the NHL plus other players who have work-
ed together on their own teams.
The Philadelphia Flyers line consisting of Bobby
Clarke, Reggie Leach and Bill Barber scored 141 goals last
year while Pete Mahovlich, Guy Lafleur and Steve Shutt of
Montreal hit for 135 goals and the French Connection line of
Buffalo's Gil Perreault, Richard Martin and Rene Robert
blinked the red light 128 times.
In addition, Darryl Sittler and Lanny McDonald of the
Maple Leafs play on the same line and Phil Esposito and
Bobby Hull previously worked together in Chicago.
The overall Team Canada has great potential because
the 18 forwards produced 754 goals last year, That's an
average of 42 goals per man.
Probably the most important factor of especially the
top three forward lines is that they are also strong defen-
sively. They know what to do and what their line-mates are
going to do in all situations and should avoid any of the
previous indecision of playing with strange team-mates.
The Team Canada goal tending should be excellent
despite the absence of fellows like Den Dryden and Bernie
Parent. Gerry Cheevers of Boston is a goalie at his best in a
clutch situation and the others Chico Resch, Roggie Vachon
and Dan Bouchard are very capable.
Probably the biggest key to our team's chances will be
the condition of Bobby Orr. The former Bruins star now
transplanted to Chicago is presently in camp and will be in
the lineup if his knees allow.
If Orr can play it will be a big bonus and supply the
necessary inspirational lift for our team. The rest of Team
Canada defencemen will give opposition forwards plenty of
headaches.
The defence corps is headed by the NHL's best
rearguard during the 1975-76 season Dennis Potvin along
with Guy Lapointe, Serge Savard and Larry Robinson of the
Montreal Canadiens and Carol Vadnais of the Rangers and
Jimmy Watson from the Flyers.
Lucan allowing six hits and
striking out eight. Brian Hod in
worked for the Royals allowing
five hits and striking out six,
Sunday night the Exeter
Royals clinched second place
with a close 3.1 win over Poplar
Hill.
Exeter opened the scoring in
the first inning as Barry
Baynham singled and scored on
Scott Burton's single. They added
two more runs in the bottom of
the third as Barry Baynharn
singled and came in as Doug
Pearson hit a long home run to
left field.
Poplar Hill got on the
scoreboard in the top of the sixth
as Daniels reached first on an
error and scored es Bradley
singled hits home, Ron Daniels
was on the mound for Poplar Hill
giving up eight hits while Brian
Hodgins worked for the Royals
giving up four hits.
The Royals will be starting
playoffs this Thursday night
against the Lucan Irish Nine in
Exeter at 9:00 o'clock,
They will then travel to Lucan
for a 7:00 o'clock contest on
Sunday night and a 9 o'clock
contest Tuesday.
If a fourth game is needed it
will be played in Exeter next
Thursday with the fifth in Lucan
the following Sunday.

Anyone wishing to watch some
entertaining fastball should keep
in mind the fastball tournament
in Zurich this Saturday. The
Royals play the first game at 8:00
a.m. against Zurich. Lucan and
Clinton play at 9:30, Goderich
and Brussels go at 11:00 while
Elmira and Walton go at 12:30.
The games conclude with the A
championship at 9:45 Satur-
day night.
It would be well worthwhile
taking in this tournament and
help support it so it will become
an annual event.

In a recent two-ball foursome
tournament at the Ironwood golf
course, Doug Ellison and Glenda
Wagner teed up to take low
gross honours.
Low gross runners-up were
Ken Freebairn and Darcy
Etherington. The combination of

prize. They were followed by
Bruce Shaw Jr, and Phyllis
Lawton. The most honest golfers
were Mark Vandergunst and
Julianne MacLean,
The 1976 Tigers scored four
times in each of the fourth and
sixth innings on the way to a 10-2
decision over the team which won
the provincial Intermediate "D"
title eight years ago.
Four walks, a hit batsman and
a single from the bat of Joe
Arnold sent the first four Tiger
runners across the plate in the
fourth. The oldtimers notched
their first marker in the same
frame. Jim Hayter drew a walk
and came around to score as
singles were delivered by Whitey
Denomme and Gord Vincent.
The winning Tigers counted
two more runs in the fifth when
Dave Parsons and Brad Gregus
walked and came around on a
ground-out and Perry Stover's
single.
The final four scores for the
new Tigers came in the sixth and
were produced by singles by Rob
Dickey, Gary Gibson, Joe Arnold
and ,Jim Dietrich.
The old timers final tally came
in the sixth when Whitey
Denomme cracked a long drive to
right field. He made it to second
easily but had a little trouble
keeping up his speed heading into
third but was helped when the

After three rounds in The

Huron Flyers are seventh in a 20
team fourth round. Ninety-four
Mosquito teams from Michigan
and Ontario have gone through
three rounds of play and the 20
teams with the best won-lost

The Huron Flyers , a Mosquito
team made up of players from
this area, is coached by Dave

presently in seventh place.
During the last 10 years Ontario
