HENSALL
162-2015 Main St.
A woman from Denmark
visiting Canada for the first, time
is impressed with the wide open
spaces and the wide roads and
highways.
Mrs. Anna Hansen is spending
three weeks with her son Anton
(Andy) Hansen of Thomas street
in town, Also here from Denmark
are Anton's brother Erik and his
wife Grete and (laughter Samna.
It's the first time out of her
native country for Mrs, Hansen.
Anton came to Canada in 1951 and
has been employed with Tuckey
Transport for the past 22 years.
The Danish visitors had their
first taste of corn on the cob
Thursday night shortly after
arriving in Exeter.
Mrs. Hansen said the visit to
Exeter culminates dreams and
hopes of more than 20 years.
Mrs. Hansen Sr, lives in Thorup
a small Danish community
comprising three farms and four
houses.
The average farm in Denmark
is small compared to Canadian
standards being about 35 acres.
Erik Hansen commented on
farming in his home country,
"We can't grow corn because of
the unsuitable weather. Dairy is
the main farming industry."
The province of Ontario is
about 24 times the size of the
entire country of Denmark. The
visitors say their population is
about 10 million with two million
in Copenhagen alone.
Further comments on Canada
included, "You sure waste a lot of
land. Our houses and all buildings
are very close together."
Erik Hansen who is a road
employee in Denmark continued,
"Our roads are much narrower
and fences come much closer to
the highways. Speed limits put
into effect for the first time about
three years ago are 60 kilometers
in town and 90 kilometers per
hour on the highways."
Television reception for the
Hansen families living in the
southern portion of Denmark is
limited to three German stations
Preparations for the 11th
annual Bean Festival are under-
way in Zurich as over six tons of
food must be ready for August 28.
Twenty-four hundred lbs. of
beans donated by the Bean
13oard and mills in Hensall are
mixed with 500 lbs. of sugar,
200 gallons of ketchup, 360 lbs.
of smoked hani and the special
spices which make the beans so
unique to Zurich. The recipe
has developed over the years
since the first festival on a trial
and error basis.
In addition to the 4,000 lbs,
of processed beans, 2,200 lbs.
of dinner ham and S0 cases
of cabbage for coleslaw must be
prepared. For $2,00 per (plate,
that's a lot of work.
The beans will be started cook-
ing on Monday in the bean festi-
val "kitchen" on Victoria Street.
Nine old refrigerators tipped on
their backs with a heating ele-
ment in the bottom are used to
bake the beans, The beans are
cooked, prebaked, and cooled
during the week preceding the
festival, but the final touches are
added on Saturday. Cooking con-
tinues all night Friday night and
around 5 a.m. Saturday morn-
ing the cooks begin the final
backing of the beans, Cooking
continues all day Saturday and
there are not usually very many
beans left.
Last year was the first year it
has rained on the bean festival
and last year the committee had
less beans left over than in any
other year. -We sold a lot more take home
beans last year so maybe that's
why they went so well," says
president of the festival commit-
tee Glenn Weido,
This year beans sold for take
home will be frozen in small
cartons, and besides selling the
frozen beans, the committee
expects to feed between 7,000
and 10,000 people this year.
There will also be around 28
to 36 booths, mainly selling
crafts of all kinds and antiques,
as well as the Farmers Market.
For the kids there will be a mid-
way and pony rides. The horse-
shoe pitching is a favourite with
many people and the frog jump-
ing race promises to be an enter-
tainment all its own. Anyone can
enter, all you need is a frog
and hopefully a way to make it
jump when and where you want
it to.
Conestoga wagon from the
museum in Goderich with Arnold
Young's horses hitched to it will
also be on display during the
afternoon of the festival.
The Queen contest prelim-
inaries are at 5 p.m. with the
final judging at 6:30 p.m. There
will be a dance in the arena dur-
ing the evening at which the
queen will reign.
`I'm very pleased with the ,
work the committee members are
doing," says Mr. Weido, "and
we never worry about getting
enough help, Many people don't
want to be bothered with the or-
ganization of the festival but
when it gets down to the final
days they come and help a lot:"
The head of the work force
this year is Mrs, Doris Goldsmith
and she will likely be coiling
people to see if and when they
would prefer to work on the day
of the festival.
This year's Bean Festival
Queen Contest is progressing
very favourably. Special guest
Jim Weir of 980 radio station will
be appearing with the lovely
contestants approximately 4:30
