Area crops badly need • some hot, dry weather
What we need is some hot dry
weather according to Don Pulleft
of the agriculture office in Clint-
on. Otherwise, the fate of the
white bean and corn crops may
not be too cheerful.
In the centre and north ends of
the county, a good deal of the
cereal grains have been harvest-
ed , but a lot of straw is still
in the fields, Any not yet har-
vested will suffer if wet weather
continues. Mr. Pullen says he has
received several reports the grain.
kernals are not as plump as they
should be thus bushel weight is
down somewhat. This has been
especially evident with malting
barley,
In the south end of the county,
heavy rains have covered many
fields in water and the white
bean crop is in trouble. The
heavy rains along with humid
weather make white mould a
definite hazard to the bean
crop,
Corn has fared little better,
It is a hot weather crop and is
going to need a lot of heat to ripen
properly, In many cases Mr.
Pullen says the crops will require
hot frost-free days right until
the end of September if there is
going to be any good grain corn.
The corn also needS some dry
weather to do well,
The straw in the south end of
the county particularly is suffer-
ing from the wet weather, Too
much dampness makes the straw
poor quality for bedding and any
farmers who still have cattle
will feel the pinch.
Some second cut hay has also
suffered because of the weather
as the only time so far when
good quality was able to be put in
was the first two weeks of June.
To overcome this problem many
farmers have switched to hay-
lege. In this form the bay may be
put in the silo in a damp state
as haylege is high moisture,
Thus the wet weather hasn't
hurt anyone using this type of
hay storage to any great extent
and according to Mr. Pullen, it
is definitely becoming a trend.
The next couple of weeks will
tell the tale. If we have good
hot dry weather, not too much
damage has been done. Anything
else and things will go from bad
to worse.
Red brick
• • is unique
The red bricks being used
on the main street in Zurich will
not be as easy to remove as you
might think. At the moment the
bricks are just fitted into place
and it would be an easy task to
remove one or two. However, this
condition will not last long as
the final touches are made to the
street.
A sand finish coat is applied
between the bricks and they are
then vibrated into place. As they
are also being laid on a sand
base, the vibration imbeds them
firmly and removing one would
not be an easy task.
The bricks themselves are
unique in this area and are basic-
ally the outcome of Zurich's
secondary plan of the official
Huron County plan. It was felt
they would promote the Swiss
or Bavarian style, as the new
municipal office does.
The gaps in the bricks are
not, alas, for garbage cans, they
are for sod and trees. Council
has decided to go ahead and
get the trees this fall, doing the
actual planting themselves to
save money. A variety of trees
will be chosen and hopefully
those who live on the street or
have businesses there will do
whatever they can to keep the
trees alive and beautiful.

Many attend
drain hearing
Several residents of Exeter and
Stephen were on hand Tuesday
for the Environmental Board
hearing into the proposed
Waterloo Street storm sewer.
The sewer is being planned as a
joint project between the councils
of Stephen and Exeter.
Several objections were raised
by neighboring property owners,
one of the main ones being that
the outlet for the drain was
already over-taxed.
Members of the board gave no
indication when a decision will be
made on the sewer.
