While the words Superior
Special may well conjure up
visions of food bargains in the
minds of most homemakers, for
Many in Ailsa Craig and for Dean
Bender in particular, it refers to
one thing—a pet racing turtle!
Coming out the victor in
Ontario's turtle races held during
Ailsa Craig's Gala Days earlier
this month, "Superior Special"
has become a noteworthy reptile
and town hero as preparations
are underway to have him race in
the. National Turtle Races in
Bossevain, Manitoba on August
22.
As part of Grand" Champion
award, 10 year old Dean Bender
was recently presented with a
hundred dollar cheque by the
Gala Days Committee to help
with expenses to fly out to Win-
nineg for the grand race.
Leaving this weekend on what
will be his very first airplane trip,
Dean will be accompanied by
Ailsa Craig's Owen Biicisea,
Superior Special will make the
trip by car, travelling with A
Craig's businessman Doug
McNair who will transport three
other turtles as well which will be
competing in the race,
fn addition Doug will take out
the prize winning float from the
Gala Days parade which pie-
turfed the well known tale of the
tortoise and the hare with Dean
and younger brother Todd
playing the leading characters.
Doug will also take along his
own parade entry which will bear
the message "Greetings from
Ailsa Craig" and arrange for
both floats to be in the Bossevain
turtle parade,
The three other turtles from
Ailsa Craig running (?) against
Superior Special are being
sponsored by the Ailsa Craig
Lions Club, the Ailsa Craig
Business Association and one
being entered by the Doug
McNair family,
Bossevain turtle officials have
promised to return favour and
escort Bossevain turtles to Ailsa
Craig next summer to compete
with their eastern cousins in the
Gala Days turtle races,
