Lowered speed limits are also
lowering the traffic toll. Holi-
day weekends this summer
have been much safer than in
yArs before.
If the average auto traveling
30 miles per hour, slows down
to 15 and then accelerates
back to 30 just once during the
course of a mile, it will burn 11
percent more fuel.
Try to avoid deep puddles.
Even if you drive very slowly
through them, the fan may
throw water all over the
engine.
Paper air filter inside the air
cleaner should be changed
every 70,000 miles, or it will
choke off supply of air to
engilne.
Australian engineer has found
a way to dispose of old car
tires. He freezes them to
almost 200° centigrade below
zero, and smashes them into
small particles that can be re-
used for rubber surfacing,
carpet backing, etc.

Try as he might, Old Man
Weather was unable to dampen
the spirits of those who attended
this year's annual chicken
barbecue put on by parishoners
of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel
Church. The barbecue, held
Sunday, August 8, was enjoyed by
around 625 people who consumed
300 pies.
I discovered that the easiest
way to report on such an event is
to partake of the delicious food,
rather than to run around with
pencil and paper in hand, feeling
and appearing like a complete
idiot. The event not only lured
local residents, but also former
parishoners from such towns as
Stratford, Goderich and Kin-
cardine.
One familiar face belonged to
the former housekeeper at the
Mt. Carmel Rectory, Bet-
ty Scratch,who now resides in
Clinton, Father Mooney also took
this opportunity to show some
members of his own family the
merits of Mt. Carmel hospitality,

barbecue and Father IVIooney's
brother, Father Paul MooineY,
came from. Bothwell fob' the
event.
All of us in Mt. Carmel are
hopeful that Mrs. Morrissey
recovers quickly from a recent
bout of illness and that her stay at,
London's St. Joseph's Hospital is
exceptionally brief.
Sunday, July 26, Bronwyn Lisa
Pearson, the daughter of Mr, &
Mrs. Douglas Pearson was
baptised and welcomed as a
member of the parish at Our
Lady of Mt. Carmel Church,
As some members of the
Darling family finish en-
tertaining a reltive here in our
area, another Darling goes
abroad to do some visiting of her
own. The Darling family recently
hosted Gary Curtis of Windsor,
who is Mrs. Darling's cousin, and
on July 29, Leigh-Anne Darling
left our area destined for Van-
couver and Victoria.
Leigh-Anne will be spending
time in Vancouver with her
cousins, Marg and Bill Darling,
and in Victoria she will 'be
spending a few days with her
grandmother, Mrs. Addie
